Design Pull Request

This repository enforces changelog, release, and label automation for all PRs and issues.
See the organisation-wide Automation Governance & Release Strategy for contributor rules.

Linked issues

Relates to Linear LSA-108 (design: culture-page - Build Culture page). It does not close the issue: Sections 5-8 (a second PR), the Culture page content on DEV, SEO metadata and the manual QA are still open.

Design Overview

The first five patterns for the About "Culture" page (/about/culture/): the hero and the first four sections. Built from the standalone prototype About Culture Standalone.html and the content doc 01-about-culture.md. This is the first of two PRs for the page; the second covers Learning and Open-source, Fostering connection, Why that matters and the CTA.

  • Hero - Lede Actions Ticks: breadcrumb, dot eyebrow, H1 with one brand-coloured word, lede with "View Open Roles" and "Meet the Team" buttons, and three labelled rows of tick marks (daily, weekly, quarterly).
  • Section - Split Statement Words: "Curiosity. Independence. Collaboration." as three oversized lines with coloured first letters, beside the "Our Culture" eyebrow and paragraph, on a card band.
  • Section - Split Sticky Intro Rows: "Remote-first since 2014" with an outlined year and lede on the left and two numbered rows (numbered step pills, then tinted tags) on the right. The left column stays in view while the rows scroll on desktop; this is the only scroll effect on the page.
  • Section - Band Lanes: "The AI-Empowered Remote Workflow" on a card band: eyebrow, H2 and lede, three ruled lanes, and a closing row with the "More time for" pill labels. It follows light and dark mode.
  • Section - Accent Card Grid: "Core Values That Drive Us" as four cards with a 4px accent top border, a large word, a small label and a paragraph. The cards lift on hover.
  • Reuse first: the dot eyebrow, ls-corner-glow, Yoast breadcrumbs, the Card - Plain style, the shared buttons and the existing phase and brand colour tokens. All blocks are core blocks; no custom blocks.

Design Files / References

Standalone HTML prototype About Culture Standalone.html and content doc 01-about-culture.md. No Figma frames.

Changes

  • Patterns: patterns/hero/hero-lede-actions-ticks.php, patterns/sections/split-statement-words.php, patterns/sections/split-sticky-intro-rows.php, patterns/sections/band-lanes.php and patterns/sections/accent-card-grid.php. All links use home_url(), so they resolve on DEV (Careers is /about/careers/, Team is /about/team/).
  • Styles: src/scss/structural/about-culture.scss, compiled to assets/css/about-culture.css. It owns only what JSON cannot reach: the tick-mark gradients, ::first-letter colours, the sticky intro, the outlined year text, the pill labels and numbered steps, the lane dividers on mobile, and the card hover. Each rule carries a "JSON limitation" comment. package.json, inc/animations.php (a page condition plus render_block marker detection) and functions.php (editor stylesheet) wire the bundle.
  • New tokens (light and dark): custom.color.accent.warm is warm-700 in light mode (4.96:1 on the page background) and warm-300 in dark mode (11.9:1); it is the orange accent in the design, which no existing token matched. custom.color.surface.brand-strong is brand-600 in light mode and cta-600 in dark mode; it is added for the Section 7 card in the second PR, because white text on the existing surface.brand is 4.41:1, under AA. The two palette colours warm-300 and warm-700 are added to theme.json.

Scope and exclusions

  • Not in this PR: Sections 5-8 (Learning and Open-source, Fostering connection, Why that matters, CTA), the Culture page content on DEV, SEO metadata and the manual QA. surface.brand-strong has no consumer yet; Section 7 uses it.
  • The Core values headings are a large H3 word with the small label as a paragraph beneath, because the core Heading block cannot style part of its text at a different size.
  • Review budget: 12 files and about 750 lines excluding the compiled assets/css/about-culture.css, so over the preferred line budget but under the split threshold. The patterns are block markup, which is long per line.

Accessibility notes

  • One H1; each section has a real H2, and sub-items are H3.
  • The tick-mark rows are decorative empty groups; the row labels beside them stay real text. The outlined "2014" repeats the eyebrow text above it and is read twice by a screen reader (core blocks cannot mark it hidden).
  • Contrast checked in light and dark: text and accent colours pass WCAG 2.2 AA (4.5:1) against their backgrounds. Axe reports no serious or critical violations in either mode.
  • The card hover has a prefers-reduced-motion fallback.

Testing

  • npm run schema:validate passes
  • npm run build:css compiles; stylelint passes on about-culture.scss
  • php -l passes for the five patterns, inc/animations.php and functions.php
  • Local, 1440px light: all five sections render as the design; the sticky intro stays in view while its rows scroll
  • Local, 390px light: no horizontal scroll; the lanes stack with bottom dividers
  • Local, 1440px dark: all five sections checked visually
  • Playwright standing suite plus the mobile-menu spec, run with SINGLE_PAGE_URL on /about/culture/ in light mode across Chromium, Mobile Chrome, Mobile Safari and Tablet: 115 passed, 26 skipped, 3 failed. The 3 failures are the existing "accordion summaries do not contain links (known issue: nested-interactive)" test on the header mobile menu, which this PR does not touch
  • Playwright standing suite in dark mode on Chromium and Mobile Chrome: 15 passed
  • npm run theme:validate, npm run patterns:escape, npm run security:scan and phpcs (not run on this branch)
  • CodeRabbit CLI review (not run on this branch)
  • Dark mode visual check at tablet and mobile widths
  • Screen reader tested
  • Culture page on DEV after deploy

WP_Block_Type_Registry::get_instance()->is_registered('yoast-seo/breadcrumbs')
so the Yoast breadcrumbs block is emitted only when that exact block is
registered.

Resolve the package.json conflict: keep develop's details-card-grid and scroll-timeline bundles in build:css, build:css:dev and watch:css alongside about-culture.
