Design Pull Request

This repository enforces changelog, release, and label automation for all PRs and issues.
See the organisation-wide Automation Governance & Release Strategy for contributor rules.

Linked issues

Relates to Linear LSA-197 (design: careers-page - Build Careers page). It does not close the issue: Sections 6-12 (a second PR), the Careers page content on DEV, copy approval and the manual QA are still open.

Design Overview

The first five patterns for the About "Careers" page (/about/careers/): the hero and the next four sections. Built from the standalone prototype About Careers Standalone.html and the content doc 06-about-careers.md. This is the first of two PRs for the page; the second (#140) covers What you'll learn, the toolset loop, What we look for, Open source, Open roles, and the reused FAQ and CTA.

  • Hero - Split Photo: breadcrumb across the top, then dot eyebrow, H1 with one brand-coloured word and lede on the left, and the team photo on the right at its natural 3:2 ratio. It stacks on mobile.
  • Section - Statement Lede: "Shape the Future of Digital Publishing and Ride the AI Wave." as a large statement with a brand-coloured closing phrase, plus the intro paragraph, on a card band.
  • Section - Split Text Pair Statement: "Why join LightSpeed" and "How we work" as two columns, then the closing "The goal is not constant visibility. The goal is dependable progress." statement on two lines. The strike-through and highlight are core inline formats.
  • Section - Numbered Bento Cards: "Who thrives here" as a six-column bento of six numbered cards with blue, orange, green and purple numbers.
  • Section - Intro Icon Card Trio: "Riding the AI Wave: Growth & Upskilling" with three equal-height icon cards (Phosphor users-three, graduation-cap and book) on the page canvas.
  • Reuse first: the dot eyebrow, ls-corner-glow, Yoast breadcrumbs, the Card - Plain style, the Icon block well class and the existing brand, phase and warm colour tokens. All blocks are core blocks; no custom blocks.

Design Files / References

Standalone HTML prototype About Careers Standalone.html and content doc 06-about-careers.md. No Figma frames.

Changes

  • Patterns: patterns/hero/hero-split-photo.php, patterns/sections/statement-lede.php, patterns/sections/split-text-pair-statement.php, patterns/sections/numbered-bento-cards.php and patterns/sections/intro-icon-card-trio.php. Internal links use home_url(). Every section follows light and dark mode, including the Growth section, which the prototype keeps permanently dark.
  • Hero photo: linked directly from the DEV media library, the same way the About team cards link their photos. It is not added to the theme.
  • Styles: src/scss/structural/about-careers.scss, compiled to assets/css/about-careers.css. It owns only what JSON cannot reach: the statement measure in ch, text-wrap, and the bento reflow on small screens. Each rule carries a "JSON limitation" comment. package.json, inc/animations.php (a page condition plus render_block marker detection) and functions.php (editor stylesheet) wire the bundle.
  • Tokens: none added. The accent.warm token (the orange accent) came in with the merged Culture PRs (design: culture-page - Add the Hero and Sections 1-4 patterns and the warm accent tokens (LSA-108) #135 and design: culture-page - Add the Sections 5-8 patterns (LSA-108) #136) and is now on develop, so this branch merges develop and uses it. The first card number, the Independence rule and the open-roles numbers read it (4.96:1 in light, 11.88:1 in dark on the page background).

Scope and exclusions

  • Not in this PR: Sections 6-12 (design: careers-page - Add the Sections 6-10 patterns and compose the FAQ and CTA (LSA-197) #140), the Careers page content on DEV, SEO metadata, copy approval and the manual QA.
  • The "30+ plugins and 10 block themes" FAQ claim, the growth benefits and the two open roles come from the content doc and still need owner approval before publishing.
  • Review budget: 10 files and about 510 lines, including the one-line compiled assets/css/about-careers.css. That is under the 15-file budget and over the preferred 400 lines, because the patterns are block markup, which is long per line.

Screenshots/video

To be added before review (light, dark and 390px mobile).

Accessibility notes

  • One H1; each section has a real H2, and the card headings are H3. The eyebrow-style labels in Sections 3 and 4 are real H2 headings, so the page keeps a correct heading order.
  • The hero photo has descriptive alt text. The strike-through and highlight in the closing statement use core inline formats.
  • Contrast checked against the real palette in light and dark: text and accent colours pass WCAG 2.2 AA (4.5:1) on the page canvas and surface.card.
  • No new motion in this PR.

Stack

Testing

  • composer run phpcs and composer run lint:php pass
  • npm run schema:validate, npm run lint:json, npm run security:scan and npm run theme:validate pass; theme:validate reports only the existing placeholder warnings
  • npm run patterns:escape passes
  • npm run build:css compiles and leaves no diff
  • npm run lint:scss: no issues in about-careers.scss; the one existing error in phase-link-card-grid.scss is unrelated and not touched here
  • Local, 1440px light and dark: all five sections render as the design
  • Local, 700px: the two-column bento fills two whole rows with no empty cell; 1440px layout unchanged
  • Local, 390px: no horizontal scroll; the bento and the cards stack to one column and the hero stacks with the photo below the text
  • Playwright standing suite plus the mobile-menu spec with SINGLE_PAGE_URL on /about/careers/, run in light and in dark across Chromium, Mobile Chrome, Mobile Safari and Tablet: 115 passed, 26 skipped, 0 failed in each mode. The 3 "accordion summaries do not contain links (known issue: nested-interactive)" header tests are expected failures this PR does not touch. The runs used the full 12-section page from the stacked branch.
  • CodeRabbit review: two minor comments on the bento (the empty cell between 600px and 782px, and the positional :last-child selector) were checked against the code, valid and fixed by picking the cards by class; CodeRabbit now approves
  • Screen reader tested
  • Careers page on DEV after deploy

Changelog

meta:no-changelog: this is the first layer of a two-PR stack. The single Careers page changelog entry lives in the second PR (#140), which covers both.

15-31: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The concern is refuted. The three slugs already appear in parts/about-mega-menu.html and parts/insights-mega-menu.html. CHANGELOG.md:760 documents that the lightspeed icon collection is registered by ls-plugin. The claim that only lightspeed/dot is in use is incorrect, and no change is supported.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Replace the hard-coded DEV media URL with a stable image source.

$ls_hero_photo_url points to ls-agency.lightspeedwp.dev. Every site that uses this pattern then loads its hero image from the DEV host.

If that host is unavailable, renamed or moved, the hero image fails. The browser also makes a third-party request on every Careers page view.

Ship the image inside the theme and load it with get_theme_file_uri(). Alternatively, use a pattern-safe placeholder image that the editor replaces with a Media Library image after insertion.

Proposed change
-$ls_hero_photo_url = 'https://ls-agency.lightspeedwp.dev/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/lightspeed-team-photo-edited.png';
+$ls_hero_photo_url = get_theme_file_uri( 'assets/images/lightspeed-team-photo.png' );
