feat(session)!: remove the path-based transcript API; fix #463 follow-ups; release version source - #466
Conversation
Reworked the transcript history logic to make the flow easier to follow. The behaviour is unchanged; the restructuring just removes some redundant branching. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Move the transcript history handling into its own module so the session transcript code is easier to navigate and the history logic can be reused independently. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds transcript adoption so sessions can pick up agent files that already exist on disk, with migration and thread lookup handling the cases where the on-disk layout predates the current session format. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reworked the transcript module to reduce duplication in how entries are appended and read back. The behaviour is unchanged; the goal was to make the code easier to follow before adding new entry kinds. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…ribe. Please provide the actual Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Background transcript tasks could leave the turn lock held if they were cancelled before completion, blocking subsequent turns. The lock is now released on cancellation so the session can continue. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reworked the background transcript logic to reduce duplication and make the control flow easier to follow. Behaviour is unchanged. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a spend tracker to the session transcript so token usage and cost accumulate as the conversation progresses. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The spend accumulator now includes cache read and cache write token counts when summing usage, so cached prompt tokens are no longer omitted from reported totals. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a view layer that projects transcript entries into renderable items, with a cache keyed on the underlying transcript so repeated renders avoid recomputing resolution and projection work. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a transcript history module and a view layer that projects session transcripts into a consumable shape. This separates raw history storage from the derived views consumers need, so callers no longer have to walk the transcript themselves. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The transcript code has been reorganised into dedicated submodules for paths, reading, writing, types, and view resolution so each concern lives in its own file. This is a pure restructuring with no behaviour change, making the module easier to navigate and extend. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Split the jsonl imports in the writer so test-only items are gated behind cfg(test) and the remaining helpers are imported separately, and drop the unused MessageUsage import from the reader. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Extract transcript path resolution into a dedicated module so callers can locate session transcripts without duplicating the directory logic. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests for transcript handling of empty and multi-part messages so regressions in session serialization are caught early. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests covering transcript locator behaviour and the view shim helpers so these paths are exercised directly rather than only through higher level session tests. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…es/tinyagents-session/src/trans Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Extend the spend cost test module with the locator and path imports it needs, and widen the spend tests import to include PathBuf. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Move the transcript history helpers out of the main transcript module into their own history module so the logic can be tested and reused in isolation. The behaviour is unchanged; only the code organisation differs. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Cover the mirroring of turn state so regressions in the session turn tracking are caught early. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The port tests were extracted from the inline test module into their own file so the port module stays focused on its public surface. No test behaviour changed. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests for the legacy transcript rewrite logic so the conversion behaviour is exercised directly. The new cases pin down how rewritten entries are produced and guard against regressions in the session transcript handling. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The background append tests now exercise the in-memory transcript locator instead of real files, so they no longer depend on tempdirs or on-disk paths. Two new cases cover same-generation compaction, verifying that a dropped delivery frees its idempotency key while a retained one stays a duplicate. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Background task state is now recorded in the transcript so that in-flight work can be observed and resumed across turns. A turn lock guards concurrent access to the shared transcript state. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Remove the test-only append_transcript_turn_with_partial helper and its re-export, along with several now-unused imports in the transcript and mirror tests. The helper had no remaining callers, so the code is trimmed to keep the writer surface minimal. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The test locator now builds a driver-backed store over in-memory storage instead of the in-memory locator, so transcript tests run against the same store implementation as production. Call sites were updated to pass the locator as a trait object. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add tests for rewriting legacy transcripts and for spend accounting in the transcript module. The new cases exercise background task transcripts and legacy rewrite paths that previously had no coverage. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
A write whose index refresh failed left a durable entry log with no lookup document, so the thread listing, which reads the index alone, could not see the transcript until it was next read or written. The listing now detects written logs that have no index document and re-indexes them through their own handles before querying. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds tests exercising the runtime store helpers in the runtime crate. The new cases lock in the current behaviour of the store so future refactors can be checked against them. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The test file for prefix refresh was renamed to match the module naming convention used elsewhere in the crate. No test behaviour changed. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…on is empty, and the stat is Could you paste the diff (or at least the stat and the changed hunks) for those two test files? Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The transcript integration tests now exercise the storage-driver store (SQLite and in-memory) instead of the file-backed history, matching the production path a host installs. The conformance suite and end-to-end transcript coverage were updated to open handles through the driver provider and to assert thread spend via the new lookup. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Remove the unused TranscriptLocator imports from the spend and view test modules so the test files compile without unused-import warnings. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted imports, call chains, and multi-line expressions to satisfy rustfmt, and reordered the test_store module declaration in the runtime crate. No behaviour changes. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add the Cargo manifest for the tinyagents-session crate so it can be built and published as part of the workspace. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Moved the per-entry formatting logic out of the main transcript loop into dedicated helper functions so each entry kind is rendered in one place. This keeps the loop focused on iteration and makes the rendering rules easier to adjust independently. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds an in-memory transcript implementation for use in tests, letting session code be exercised without touching real storage. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Added conformance and parity tests covering transcript history and session locators, along with a testkit helper to exercise them. This locks in consistent locator behaviour across the transcript implementations. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add README files describing the transcript module and its view submodule so the session crate's structure and responsibilities are easier to navigate. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Document the session crate's purpose and usage to make it easier for contributors to understand its role within the workspace. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Document the driver-backed transcript history and the removal of the path-based transcript API, replacing references to FileTranscriptHistory, FileTranscriptLocator, and thread_spend with their current equivalents. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds an Unreleased entry covering the breaking removal of the path-based transcript API in favour of the store port, along with the two deferred tinyagents#463 fixes and the Release workflow version derivation change. The previous entry's note about the path API being unchanged is corrected to point at the removal. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a helper that derives the next release version from the current version and the commits since the last tag, along with a test script covering its behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The release workflow now derives the next version from a shared script that compares the workspace version against existing tags, since the workspace version can lag the latest tag. CI runs the script's test suite to keep the versioning logic covered. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The release workflow now runs the next-release-version script in a command substitution and parses its output with a here-string, instead of feeding the script directly into read via process substitution. This avoids the script running in a subshell whose output could be lost or interleaved with the surrounding shell state. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The integration test crate no longer uses chrono, so the dependency was removed from its manifest and the lockfile. This trims an unnecessary build dependency without changing test behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Several transcript modules and re-exports are only used when the legacy-import feature is enabled, so builds without it emitted dead code and unused import warnings. Gate those items with cfg_attr to allow the warnings only when the feature is off. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Tests build transcript fixtures as classic JSONL and import them through the legacy importer, so the crate now depends on itself with the legacy-import feature enabled to keep those tests working under --no-default-features. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

Closes #453
What
OpenHuman (openhuman#7859, merged
072bb5f5bd) no longer calls the path-based transcript API, so it is removed fromtinyagents-session. Transcripts are reached only through the store port (TranscriptLocator/TranscriptHistory/TranscriptRead, served byDriverSessionStores,WorkspaceStoresandInMemorySessionStores). The only reader of classicsession_raw/*.jsonlis the one-time, read-onlylegacy::import_transcripts_once/WorkspaceStores, pluslegacy::rewrite_legacy_transcriptsfor pre-import fixups; the JSONL codec they need stays crate-private.(a) Removed from the public surface (breaking)
FileTranscriptLocator,FileTranscriptHistory,AgentTranscriptFiles,agent_transcript_root,write_transcript*,append_transcript_turn*,append_interrupted_partial,append_tools_record,read_transcript,read_transcript_display,read_transcript_legacy_md,adopt_legacy_session_transcripts,migrate_layout_if_needed,find_latest_transcript,find_root_transcript(s)_for_thread*,read_thread_usage_summary(+ThreadUsageSummary,SubagentArchetypeUsage),resolve_keyed_transcript_path*,append_background_message(+ the lock-notification variant),TranscriptLocator::file_backing,view::get_page/get_page_scoped/project_thread*/resolve_files_scopedand the view's projection cache,thread_spend, and thefs2dependency.Store-port replacements:
append_background_message_in,view::get_page_in, newview::project_thread_in(locator, thread_id, agent_id, lookup)(theSpawnCallLookupvariant of the oldproject_thread_scoped_with),spend::thread_spend_in,TranscriptLocator::thread_transcripts/root_for_thread_scoped/read_session_transcript/adopt_legacy.Before deleting I grepped
upstream/mainof openhuman (all crates,tests/) and the othervendor/*modules. No other vendor module uses any removed symbol. What openhuman still references is listed under "Follow-up in the re-pin PR" below; every production use has a replacement, none kept as a path API.(b) The two tinyagents#463 findings, with regression tests
append_background_message_inlooked at every record of the head generation's log, so a key dropped by a compaction inside the same generation (TranscriptHistory::replace) still reportedDuplicateand the delivery was lost. It now looks at the generation's live context only (rows after the last compaction plus that compaction's replacement). The wrong doc sentence is corrected (the old text claimed a dropped key is appended again, which only held across generations). Tests:a_delivery_dropped_by_a_same_generation_compaction_is_appended_again(fails on the old scan, verified),a_delivery_kept_by_a_same_generation_compaction_is_still_a_duplicate.DriverTranscriptLocator::list_threadnow compares written index documents with written transcript logs (two counts) and, only on a mismatch, finds the missing stems and re-indexes them through their own handles before listing. Tests:a_listing_sees_and_repairs_a_root_whose_index_refresh_failed,a_listing_repairs_an_unindexed_subagent_of_an_indexed_root(both fail without the repair, verified).a_display_read_repairs_an_index_a_write_could_not_refreshnow asserts throughroot_for_thread, since the listing itself now self-repairs.Also found while porting tests onto the driver store:
legacy::import_transcriptsdropped a classic line's top-levelbackgroundfield, so an out-of-band delivery lost its origin and idempotency key on import. It now lands in the row'sextra_metadata(covered bya_rewrite_keeps_background_delivery_provenance, which now also imports and re-delivers).(c) Release workflow
The workflow computed the next version from the stale workspace version (2.1.4) and so proposed
v2.2.0, which exists. The computation moved to.github/scripts/next-release-version.sh: the base is the highest of the workspace version and every plainvX.Y.Ztag (pre-release tags ignored), numeric ordering..github/scripts/next-release-version.test.shpins it (including the 2.1.4 +v2.8.0case, which now yieldsv2.9.0) and runs in the CI lint job. The "Update crate version" step still rewrites from the workspace version, so the version-bump commit is unchanged.Tests
The file-locator/history tests were removed with the code (generation locking, path normalisation, adoption lock, layout migration,
find_*); generations, truncation, adoption and listing are covered by the driver/in-memory suites andtestkit::conformance. Tests that exercise store-port behaviour were ported rather than dropped:MemoryStorage), with classic fixtures written as raw JSONL and imported throughlegacy::import_transcripts(transcript/test_locator.rs,view/test_shims.rs);tinyagents-runtimetests use a driver-backed store (test_store.rs) and read back by stem;feature_session_transcriptnow drives a SQLite-backed store across a reopen.Writer helpers that only tests use (
write_transcript,append_transcript_turn, ...) are#[cfg(test)]; the classic codec is#[cfg_attr(not(feature = "legacy-import"), allow(dead_code))].Checked locally:
cargo fmt --all -- --check,cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets [--all-features] -- -D warnings, cargo test --workspace [--all-features],RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D rustdoc::broken_intra_doc_links" cargo doc --workspace --no-deps --all-features,cargo machete crates, cargo check -p tinyagents-session --no-default-features. Not run locally: the 80% line-coverage gate (cargo llvm-cov); the change is mostly deletion plus tested additions.Follow-up in the re-pin PR (openhuman), not in this PR
After this merges and
vendor/tinyagentsis re-pinned, openhuman needs:platform/startup/ops.rs: dropmigrate_layout_if_needed(the one-time import already reads date-groupedsession_raw/DDMMYYYY/directly).crates/openhuman-embed/src/agent/layout.rs: inlineagent_transcript_root(workspace, id)(it was<workspace>/agents/<id>); the field is a legacy path only.write_transcript/read_transcript/FileTranscriptLocator/project_thread(agent/session_host/*_tests.rs,config/migrations/*_tests.rs,storage/import/sessions_tests.rs,threads/transcript_host_tests.rs,tests/storage_desktop_upgrade_e2e.rs): write raw classic JSONL and import it, or useDriverSessionStores. Doc comments naming the removed symbols.phase_out_profile_mdkeeps working:legacy::rewrite_legacy_transcriptsis unchanged. Not done here (tracked on #7809): the
ToolResultArtifactStorehalf, and the reader keying issue noted on openhuman#7859 (achat_agent_idflip on an existing thread loses prior turns; needs the writer agent persisted with the thread or an agent-agnostic lookup).Release note
If the Release workflow still fails after this merges, create the next minor tag (
v2.9.0) on the main merge commit by hand withgh release create, as was done for v2.5.0-v2.8.0.Summary by CodeRabbit
