Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7809, tinyhumansai/openhuman#7522. Refs #453 (transcript half; does not close it).

What

Adds the driver-port entry point for file-era workspaces, so a host stops constructing FileTranscriptLocator::new(workspace):

  • port::WorkspaceStores::open(workspace, agent_id) (feature legacy-import): serves transcripts through DriverSessionStores over a SQLite backend at <workspace>/session_store/ (internal driver location). Callers get a TranscriptLocator port. Cached per workspace and agent.
  • legacy::import_transcripts_once: one-time, read-only import of session_raw/*.jsonl (flat and date-grouped) into the existing session_transcripts / session_transcript_entries collections (no parallel collections). A marker doc in session_import_markers records completion; not written while any file is unreadable, so it is retried. Legacy files are never modified, renamed or deleted.
  • SessionRef stem identity, begin_generation/session_chain, compaction-never-erases and recorded-tools restore are the existing driver implementation's semantics, unchanged.

Tests

  • second launch skips the scan and leaves sources byte-identical; late files are not picked up
  • unreadable file leaves the import unmarked and the retry is idempotent
  • markers are per agent scope
  • legacy generations (root, root.g1) resume through the port, begin_generation chains a third, sources untouched, handle cached

fmt, clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings and -p tinyagents-session --no-default-features clean; cargo test -p tinyagents-session 576 passed.

Deferred (explicit remainder of #453 transcript half)

  • Removing FileTranscriptLocator/FileTranscriptHistory and the path-taking free functions (write_transcript, append_transcript_turn, read_transcript*, spend, view, adopt_legacy_session_transcripts, find_*_transcript, turn lock, background append). Hosts (openhuman session_store, origin_delivery, threads::ops::edit, agent_transcripts) must first switch to WorkspaceStores; the path API stays until then so nothing breaks.
  • Re-pin of vendor/tinyagents in openhuman after this lands.

Note: the auto-commit checkpoint hook gave the first three commits misleading subjects; their content is this feature.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Workspace transcripts are stored in a local database and can be resumed across workspace sessions.
    • Existing transcript files are imported once and remain unchanged. If a file cannot be read, the import can be retried later.
    • Transcript data is kept separate for each agent and workspace.
    • When an import completes, later workspace sessions skip the import; unreadable files remain eligible for a future retry.

The legacy module and its one-shot transcript migration driver are no longer needed now that sessions are read through the port layer, so the dead code paths have been dropped.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Split the workspace port out of the port module root into a dedicated
workspace submodule so the port definitions stay organised as more
session ports are added.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted the marker helper functions in the legacy transcript importer to satisfy rustfmt line width limits, and reordered the test module declaration in the legacy module. No behaviour changes.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds `port::WorkspaceStores::open`, which serves transcripts from a SQLite
backend under the workspace and hands callers a `TranscriptLocator` port
instead of a file path, with handles cached per workspace and agent. A
one-time legacy import moves classic `session_raw/*.jsonl` files into the
store, recording completion in a marker document so unreadable files are
retried and the originals are left untouched. The two driver accessors used

critique

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: Provisional: the diff gates the new `WorkspaceStores` type and `workspace` module behind `legacy-import`, and `WorkspaceStores` references `crate::legacy::OnceOutcome` which only exists under that feature — so the no-default-features build should now be fine, but I need to check how `WorkspaceStores` is actually constructed and consumed (the `workspace` module, `DriverSessionStores::try_for_agent`/`for_agent` signatures, and whether any legacy-import caller builds `AgentStores` unconditionally) to confirm the earlier finding's fix holds and the new type's Clone/Debug assumptions match `AgentStores`/`OnceOutcome`. Requesting reads of the `workspace` module and the `legacy` module's `OnceOutcome` before a verdict. security

  • Conclusion: Success

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds workspace-scoped SQLite transcript stores and a one-time importer for legacy JSONL transcripts. The importer records completion only when schema declaration is allowed and no source files are unreadable. Successful workspace handles are cached by workspace and agent.

Changes: Workspace Transcripts

Layer / File(s) Summary
One-time legacy transcript import
crates/tinyagents-session/src/legacy/mod.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/legacy/types.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/legacy/transcripts_once.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/legacy/transcripts_once_tests.rs
Adds an import outcome and marker-based completion check. The importer leaves the marker unwritten when source files are unreadable. Tests cover repeated imports, unreadable files, unchanged source files, and agent-specific markers.
Workspace-backed transcript stores
crates/tinyagents-session/src/port/drivers/mod.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/port/mod.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/port/types.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/port/workspace.rs, crates/tinyagents-session/src/port/workspace_tests.rs, CHANGELOG.md
Adds feature-gated WorkspaceStores backed by SQLite in session_store/. Opening a workspace creates driver-backed stores and imports legacy transcripts. Successful handles are cached by workspace and agent. Tests cover transcript resume and chaining, source-file preservation, provider reuse, and empty workspaces. The changelog describes this behavior and identifies transcript APIs that remain file-based.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d9f83

Legacy transcripts remain accessible under the existing shared-workspace behavior, and incomplete imports can be retried. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d9f83

The migration preserves legacy files and retries unreadable sources, but an interrupted transcript replay can later be classified as complete. This creates a recovery and data-integrity risk within the affected workspace. No new authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: An interrupted replay can become a completed one-time migration. Replay writes a transcript in multiple steps, while retry skips the entire source whenever the destination returns any session. After an early write succeeds and a later write fails or execution stops, a retry can count that partial transcript as already present and write the completion marker. Subsequent opens then skip migration and may reuse the completed handle. The underlying skip behavior is inherited, but the new completion gate makes that partial state authoritative. This affects migration recovery and transcript integrity; the unchanged source files remain available for manual recovery.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated migration failure is bounded to imported transcript state in the selected workspace and destination agent scope. Other agents importing the same shared legacy source may independently encounter it. The inspected evidence does not establish remote reachability or a cross-service privilege escalation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The host supplies the workspace path and destination agent identity. WorkspaceStores creates a local provider with declaration authority; the reusable importer separately checks its provider's declaration policy before marker operations. Agent scope names use validated identifiers or a reserved-prefix hash mapping rather than unchecked path concatenation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The in-process open lock and absent-only marker prevent some overlapping initialization, but neither establishes atomic completion of a multi-write transcript replay. Preserved legacy files contain the recovery source; automatic recovery still needs to distinguish partial imports from completed or subsequently edited transcripts.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make migration completion depend on durable per-source completion or atomic transcript publication, rather than destination existence alone. Preserve post-import edits and validate recovery with interruption and concurrent-process cases before relying on the completion marker.

Moved the session type definitions out of the monolithic legacy module into dedicated legacy and port submodules, with the one-shot transcript logic and its tests now living in their own files. This is a pure restructuring to make the legacy and port boundaries explicit without changing behaviour.
