🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Resolve against the target surface traits.
resolvePlatformColorUncached ignores node and resolves every payload with RCTKeyWindow().traitCollection. If a surface has its own overrideUserInterfaceStyle, this code resolves its platform color for the key window theme instead. The surface-specific cache key then stores incorrect channels for that surface.
Pass the target surface trait collection into resolution. Do not use one process-wide trait collection for all surfaces.

Correct, and it is a known limitation rather than an oversight - the header doc on resolvePlatformColorUncached says the node is ignored and a window with its own overrideUserInterfaceStyle is not honoured.
I am leaving it for a follow-up, for two reasons. The common path is already right: Appearance.setColorScheme applies the override to every window in every scene (RCTAppearance.mm:120-121), so the key window carries it and resolution follows it. What stays wrong is the narrow case of a surface whose override differs from the key window - multiple windows with different themes, or a native override applied to one view tree.
Fixing it properly means getting from a ShadowNode to that surface view trait collection, which needs surfaceId-to-view plumbing across the C++/ObjC boundary on the main thread, and it is the same plumbing the Android resolver needs for its themed Context. That belongs with the Android work rather than bolted onto this PR. surfaceId is already part of the memo key, so the cache does not need changing when it lands - only the resolver does.

@MatiPl01, thanks for the detailed context.
The current behavior is correct for Appearance.setColorScheme, because React Native applies that override to every window. The remaining case requires surface-specific native trait resolution.
The shared surfaceId-to-native-view plumbing is a suitable follow-up scope. The existing cache key already includes surfaceId, so the resolver can adopt the new trait source without a cache-key change.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for the follow-up work?

PlatformColor and DynamicColorIOS payloads reached CSSColor, which accepts only numbers and bools, so the variant found no matching type and threw. They now parse into CSSPlatformColor, which keeps the payload and hands it back to RN from toDynamic() - static platform colors render as before. Interpolating one still throws, with a message saying so; resolving a payload against the animated view comes next.

Docs note to fold into this PR when it lands, so the routing rules describe platform colors only once CSS supports them. Add to the Why it holds: the platform routing parse only accepts numeric colors. |
First PR of a series adding `PlatformColor` support to CSS animations. It puts the skeleton in place - the value type and the shared-code changes the layer needs to carry one - without resolving anything yet. Resolution and blending follow in #10305. `PlatformColor` and `DynamicColorIOS` payloads are objects, but `CSSColor` accepts only numbers and bools, so a color property carrying one killed the app with `No compatible type found for construction`. They now parse into `CSSPlatformColor`, which keeps the payload and hands it back from `toDynamic()` for React Native to resolve against the surface's theme, exactly as for a static style. Color properties accept either alternative, `value<CSSColor, CSSPlatformColor>`. Turning a payload into channels needs the animated view, which is not implemented here, so a platform color reports that it cannot interpolate and the variant switches over instead. Nothing throws. Shared code moves to make room for it. `CSSPlatformColor` is the first value type that resolves without being relative to a view property, a distinction the two `value()` overloads did not draw before, so `ResolvableValueInterpolator`, its config and its factory become `Relative*` to match what they actually carry, and the overload guards now separate "resolves against a relative property" from "resolves at all". ## Testing iOS and Android build, jest and static checks pass. On the simulator: plain color ramps unchanged, static `PlatformColor` renders, and both platform-to-platform and platform-to-plain switch over with the app alive. --------- Co-authored-by: tshmieldev <wojtekrok88@gmail.com>
Makes
PlatformColorandDynamicColorIOSvalues actually animate in CSS animations and transitions on iOS. #10282 taught the CSS layer to parse them and switch over; this resolves them into channels and blends.CSSPlatformColorgainsresolve(), andCSSValueVariantresolves any alternative whose resolution is another alternative before interpolating, so a payload comes back as a plainCSSColorand blends with anything a color can - including a literal on the other side, or the default when a keyframe omits one endpoint. Selection is on the resolve return type, which keepsCSSLengthon its relative path. At progress 0 and 1 the raw payload still goes to React Native, so settled values keep re-resolving on theme changes.Resolution runs through RN's own platform color utilities, memoized per payload, surface and appearance generation - a bounded cache invalidated by RN's appearance notification, so past the first frame a resolve is a lookup, with no per-frame UIKit calls. The first resolution seeds from the key window's traits, which honour
overrideUserInterfaceStyle. Platforms without a resolver skip all of it and keep the discrete switch from #10282, with a one-time dev warning.Testing
backgroundColor: platform-to-platform, literal-to-platform and single-endpoint keyframes all blend; a platform-to-platform transition animates and settles correctly.labelColorramp re-resolves from black to white, and a settled transition picks up the dark variant through RN.
