rule-selector: optional check line, run once by stage-implement - #957
rule-selector@1 takes an optional fourth line, check: <command template> with {base}. It is additive, so the contract keeps its name and a fill without it behaves as before.
The review verbs read a fill with a check: line as the usual three-line shape and never run the check.
stage-implement gains a rule-selector prop (binding slot mattstack:stage-implement/rule-selector) and a step "Check the work against the team's rules" between committing and recording the commits. It runs the check once from the branch point, fixes the rules the change breaks (test-first for behaviour), commits the fixes, then records the commits. No second run.
A check that exits non-zero is one line in the stage's return and never fails the stage. An unbound slot, selector: none or no check: line skips the step.
Tests in rule-selector.test.ts cover the compiled graph, the skip edge with and without a check: line, and the contract text. Docs: props table, extending-a-pack, README. Plugin bumped to 0.32.33.
Why
A team can now hand the author its rules while the code is still being written, so self-review sees work that already follows them. Before this, implement never looked at the rules, and a fill with an extra line made the review verbs drop every rule step.
engine-floor: unchanged (no new tool, argument or daemon verb)
Implementation workflows can now run an optional rule check after committing changes. If the check identifies broken rules, the workflow can apply test-first fixes and record those commits.
Checks that fail to run are reported as observations and do not block commit recording. Review workflows do not run the optional check.
Documentation
Updated guidance explains how to configure the optional check and where it runs.

Walkthrough
The rule-selector@1 fill can now include an optional {base} check command. stage-implement runs the command and routes successful checks that report broken rules through a fix stage. Tests cover check outcomes and skip paths. Plugin and compiled skill references advance to version 0.32.33.

The contract and pack documentation add an optional check: template for stage-implement. The fixture binds the selector to that stage. Tests assert that review engines document the optional line without running it.
Implementation check and fix flow plugins/mattstack/attachments/pipeline/stage-implement/*, plugins/mattstack/README.md, lib/skills/__tests__/rule-selector.test.ts
stage-implement can run the bound check, skip it when no check is available, send rules reported by a successful check to fix_rule_breaks, and record commits. Tests cover the check flow and skip cases.
Plugin release and compiled skill references plugins/mattstack/.claude-plugin/plugin.json, plugins/mattstack/skills/shepherdr/*, plugins/mattstack/skills/wrap-up/*, plugins/mattstack/skills/writing-style-*/...
The plugin version and compiled skill metadata and source references change from 0.32.32 to 0.32.33. Skill guidance remains unchanged.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to abb5d
The optional check adds command execution and can guide additional edits and commits. Existing plan, worktree, and no-push constraints remain, and check failures are explicitly advisory. No concrete privilege escalation or security regression was established, but execution permissions and interrupted-run behavior remain incompletely demonstrated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The added execution site uses the implementation session's Bash authority and can influence worktree edits and commits. The worktree instruction identifies the intended working directory, not an isolation boundary; maximum filesystem, network, and credential exposure depends on host permissions not established here.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The documented configuration path is an authored pack fill and binding, with pack edits made in the organization clone. Pack-provided command execution predates this PR in review selector flows. The PR adds another consumer of that configurable authority rather than establishing a new engine privilege boundary.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Fix instructions retain the plan boundary: inapplicable rules and fixes requiring departure from the plan are reported rather than applied. Behavioral fixes must be test-first and committed on the branch inside the worktree. The existing prohibition on implementation-stage pushes remains.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Before using checks with external side effects, define their interruption and re-entry semantics. Prefer read-only or idempotent checks; where duplicate execution is security-sensitive, bind execution to a durable attempt identity and stable branch/base identity rather than relying solely on the single-run instruction.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "rule-selector: optional check line, run once by stage-implement" matches the main change. The PR adds an optional check: line to the rule-selector@1 contract and a rule-check step in stage-implement that runs that check once. The title names both the contract change and the stage that runs it. Supporting files include the rule-selector contract, the stage-implement blocks, and the rule-selector tests. The title does not mention the fix step or the version bump, which is expected for a short title.
