design: referrals - Add the Referrals page section patterns and fix the mobile menu accordion links (LSA-212) - #175
This repository enforces changelog, release, and label automation for all PRs and issues.
See the organisation-wide Automation Governance & Release Strategy for contributor rules.
Linked issues
Relates to Linear LSA-212 (improve: referrals - Redesign the referral programme page). It does not close the issue: the Referrals page on DEV still has to be rebuilt from these patterns, and the manual QA is still open.
Design Overview
The section patterns for the redesigned Referrals page, built from the approved standalone design. The page keeps every word of the live page copy, the five steps, the four reasons, the seven form fields and the case-study query. The hero reuses hero-split-graphic-actions with the referral copy and the referral graphic from the previous PR, and the client logos use the shared marquee from the previous PR.
Section - Intro Graphic Lede: the "We love our clients and our partners!" H2, a decorative three-person network graphic (an empty group masked with the shape and filled with the brand text token, so it follows light and dark mode) and the lede paragraph. The columns stack on mobile.
Section - List Card Pair: two bordered cards, each an H3, a lead paragraph and a core List. "How referrals work" stays a real ordered list whose numbers become round brand badges (CSS counters), and "Why refer LightSpeed?" is a bulleted list with brand-coloured bullets, bold lead-ins and the WordPress.org link.
Section - Split Intro Form Panel: laid out like the Contact page. The "Partner with us" H2 and paragraph sit on the band on the left (sticky on desktop through the shared ls-hero-form-intro class), and a bordered surface.canvas card on the right holds only the Gravity Forms block. The form ID is looked up by the form title ("Referral"), so the pattern works on every site (ID 5 on LIVE and DEV, ID 6 locally), falling back to 5. The form uses the shared Gravity Forms token mapping scoped to the card's referral-form anchor, so no other form changes.
Section - Project Query Image Cards: a "Related Case Studies" H2 above a 2-column core Query Loop of project posts from the "WordPress" project group (looked up by slug per site), each rendered as the existing Card - Case Study shell with the featured image (16:10) and the post title as an H3. The whole card is one link: the title link is non-positioned so its stretched overlay covers the card, with the focus ring drawn around the card and the shell's existing hover lift.
Reuse first: the form card and sticky intro reuse the Contact page treatment, the cards reuse the Card - Case Study shell, and the Gravity Forms colours come from the shared token mapping. No new tokens.

Changes
Patterns:intro-graphic-lede.php, list-card-pair.php, split-intro-form-panel.php and project-query-image-cards.php under patterns/sections/.
SCSS:referral-sections.scss (compiled to assets/css/referral-sections.css) gains the network graphic mask, the numbered step badges, the brand bullets, the referral form styles (scoped to #referral-form, field text at the 16px minimum) and the stretched case-study link. inc/animations.php lists the new render markers.
Mobile menu (accessibility fix): each accordion title in parts/mobile-menu.html was a link inside a <summary>, which axe reports as nested-interactive. The titles are now plain text, and the section overview link already inside every panel ("See all work", "See all solutions", "See all services", "Read all insights", "About LightSpeed") is the way to the section page. The unused summary > a rules are removed from styles/blocks/details/mobile-menu-accordion.json. This changes the mobile menu on every page: tapping a title now opens its panel instead of going straight to the section page.
Content quirks on the live page: the "GET 10% PER REFERRAL*" asterisk has no footnote anywhere on the page, the form labels contain typos ("You Name", "You Email", "woud like"), and amounts appear as both "R10000" and "R10,000". All are kept verbatim; the labels are fixed in the form itself.
Form error colours: Gravity Forms' default red error text is below 4.5:1 on the dark card. Until a status.error token exists, the error banner and messages use the default text token (marked TEMPORARY in the SCSS) and only the icon and borders keep the plugin's red. Proposed token, mirroring status.success: error-strong#B91C1C in light (6.2:1 on the canvas) and the existing error-foreground#EF4444 in dark (5.32:1).
Step badges: white on the default brand fill is 4.41:1 in light mode, so the badges use surface.brand-strong (5.34:1 in light, 11.37:1 in dark).
Scope and exclusions
The DEV page is page content in the database and is not touched. After deploy, rebuild it from these patterns, set its template to page-no-title, re-add the pattern names to the top-level blocks, and use the pum-triggercta class on the consultation button.
The header and the desktop menu are not changed.
Review size: 10 files, 460 added and 27 removed lines against the base (branch 1). The compiled CSS file is build output. The code is the four patterns (296 lines), the SCSS (146), the spec (23) and small wiring changes. That is slightly over the 400-line preferred budget and inside the limits.
Screenshots / video
None attached. Checked on the local site at desktop, tablet and mobile widths in dark mode and visually at 1440px and 390px: the intro, list cards, form card, case-study cards and the opened mobile menu render as designed, the form shows the validation error state on an empty submit, and nothing scrolls horizontally.
Accessibility / performance notes
One H1, H2 section headings and H3 card and column headings; the steps are a real ordered list and the cards are real links.
The mobile menu summaries are no longer nested controls (axe nested-interactive).
Form field text is at the 16px minimum, and the case-study card has a visible focus ring around the whole card.
The new stylesheet loads on the Referrals page and through the render-marker fallback where the patterns render. No new scripts.
Review scope: the Referrals page section patterns, the mobile menu accessibility fix and the stale Pricing spec fix. Review PR 1 first; this PR's base is its branch, so the diff shows only this layer.
Test plan
composer run phpcs and composer run lint:php pass
npm run schema:validate, npm run lint:json and npm run security:scan pass
npm run patterns:escape shows 2 new warnings for the wp_json_encode block-comment idiom in split-intro-form-panel.php and project-query-image-cards.php (the same idiom as other existing patterns, JSON hex-encoded for comment safety); 35 warnings are in existing files
npm run theme:validate completes with warnings only (existing placeholder text)
npm run lint:scss: no issues in the changed files; the one error is the known one in phase-link-card-grid.scss
npm run build:css leaves no extra diff
Single-page Playwright on /referrals/, light mode, four projects, standing specs plus the mobile menu spec: 103 passed, 26 skipped, 0 failed
The same run in dark mode on the same code before the stack was rebased: 103 passed, 26 skipped, 0 failed
Editor block validity: the Referrals test page (109 blocks), the Testimonials test page (337) and the mobile menu template part (97), 0 invalid
Case-study card: clicks on the image, edges, title and empty space all land on the link, and clicking the image navigates
Form: an empty submit shows the validation error state and saves nothing

Changelog

- Link the entry to PR #175
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
New patterns
- Section - Intro Graphic Lede: H2, a masked three-person network graphic and the lede paragraph
- Section - List Card Pair: two cards with an ordered "How referrals work" list and a bulleted "Why refer LightSpeed?" list
- Section - Split Intro Form Panel: intro text on the left and a bordered card holding only the Gravity Forms block on the right, laid out like the Contact page
- Section - Project Query Image Cards: a 2-column Query Loop of Work posts from the WordPress group with the Card - Case Study shell
Styles
- Extend referral-sections.scss with the network graphic, the numbered step badges, the brand bullets, the referral form styles and the stretched case-study link
- Scope the form styles to the referral-form anchor and set the field text to the 16px minimum
- Use the default text token for form error messages until a status.error token exists
- Recompile assets/css/referral-sections.css and register the new render markers in inc/animations.php
Content and data
- Keep every word of the live page copy, the five steps and the four reasons
- Look up the Referral form ID by title and the WordPress project group by slug so the patterns work on every site
Cause
- The theme link style sets position: relative on anchors
- The stretched title link sized its overlay against the 30px title link, not the card
- Only the title was clickable
Fix
- Keep the case-study title link non-positioned so its overlay resolves against the card
- The overlay now covers the image, the title and the empty space, with the focus ring around the card
Styles
- Update referral-sections.scss and recompile assets/css/referral-sections.css
…212)
Mobile menu
- Make the accordion titles plain text so a <summary> no longer wraps a link (axe: nested-interactive)
- Keep the section overview links inside each panel ("See all work", "See all solutions" and the rest)
- Remove the now-unused summary > a rules and their description from mobile-menu-accordion.json
Tests
- Drop Pricing from the mobile menu accordion list while the Pricing menu is hidden
- Turn the known-issue test into a real check that no accordion summary contains a link
- Run the axe scan with no rules disabled
Changelog
- Add an Unreleased entry for the four Referrals section patterns, the referral styles, the mobile menu summary fix and the Pricing spec update
- Link the entry to PR #175

Cause
- The referral-sections render markers had no class from the form panel pattern
- A form panel inserted on any page other than referrals did not load the form styles
Fix
- Add ls-referral-form-card to the referral-sections render markers in inc/animations.php
