design: logo-marquee - Add the scrolling client logo marquee and the referral hero graphic (LSA-212) - #174
This repository enforces changelog, release, and label automation for all PRs and issues.
See the organisation-wide Automation Governance & Release Strategy for contributor rules.
Linked issues
Relates to Linear LSA-212 (improve: referrals - Redesign the referral programme page). It also changes the client logo strip built for LSA-206 (Testimonials). It does not close either issue: the Referrals sections are in the next PR in this stack, and both pages still have to be rebuilt on DEV.
Design Overview
One shared scrolling client logo strip for the Testimonials and Referrals pages, plus the Referrals hero graphic. It replaces the static Logo Strip pattern from #173.
Section - Logo Marquee: six client logos in a clipped track that scrolls slowly and endlessly. Each logo is a light/dark image pair toggled by the existing logo visibility tokens, so the logos stay legible in both modes. A visually hidden H2 ("A few of our happy clients") names the section, and a small text-and-icon control beneath it pauses and plays the scroll.
Accessibility (WCAG 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide):
Without JavaScript, or when the visitor prefers reduced motion, the logos stay a static, centred, wrapping row, with no repeat and no pause control.
The script starts the scroll, repeats the logos once for a seamless loop (the repeat has empty alt text and aria-hidden), and shows the pause control. The control is a real <button>, keyboard operable (Enter and Space), with a label that names the next action, a 16px minimum text size and a target above 24px.
The scroll also pauses on hover and while anything inside has focus, and it follows the visitor's reduced-motion setting if it changes while the page is open.
The window is sized to less than one set of logos (by the width of the widest logo), so the same logo can never show twice at once. It re-measures as the images load and the screen resizes.
Referral hero graphic: a masked "one person refers another" shape, filled with the brand text token so it follows light and dark mode. It replaces banner-refer.svg, whose fixed dark fill disappeared in dark mode. The Referrals page uses it by swapping the graphic group's class in the Hero - Split Graphic Actions markup.
Reuse first: the control is a core Button (tagName: button) with the neutral Button - Secondary Outline variant, the same approach as the Expand all toggle. The JS follows the existing render_block enqueue pattern (FAQ accordion, scroll timeline, Expand all). No new tokens.
Design Files / References
Standalone HTML designs produced in Claude Design for the Testimonials and Referrals pages, with the marquee added on request after the Referrals design review.
Changes
Pattern:patterns/sections/logo-marquee.php (slug ls-theme/logo-marquee). patterns/sections/logo-strip.php is removed, since the marquee replaces it and falls back to a static row by itself. Nothing else referenced it.
SCSS:src/scss/structural/logo-marquee.scss holds the static-row default, the seamless loop keyframes (60 seconds a loop), the edge fades, the logo sizing and the pause control styles. src/scss/structural/referral-sections.scss starts with the referral hero graphic mask. The now-unused strip rules are removed from testimonial-cards.scss. Compiled CSS is rebuilt for all three.
JS:assets/js/logo-marquee.js.
Wiring: both bundles are added to the build:css, build:css:dev and watch:css scripts in package.json, registered with their render markers in inc/animations.php (logo-marquee loads on the Testimonials and Referrals pages), the marquee script is enqueued by a render_block filter with translatable labels and the two inline icons, and both bundles are added as editor styles in functions.php.
Icons: the LightSpeed icon collection has a play icon but no pause icon, so the small pause and play glyphs are drawn inline to match each other.
Scope and exclusions
The Referrals sections (intro, list cards, form, case studies), the mobile menu fix and the stale Pricing spec fix are in the next PR in the stack.
DEV pages are page content in the database and are not touched. After deploy, the Testimonials page should use this pattern in place of the old strip.
Review size: 12 files, 561 added and 122 removed lines against develop. The three compiled CSS files (4 changed lines) are build output. The code is the pattern (201 lines), the JS (101), the marquee SCSS (153) and the inc/animations.php wiring (76). That is over the 400-line preferred budget and inside the 800-line limit and the 15-file budget; the marquee is one coherent change that cannot be split further.
Screenshots / video
None attached. Checked on the local site in dark and light mode at 1440px and 390px: the logos scroll, fade at the edges and never repeat in view, and the pause control sits right-aligned under the strip.
Accessibility / performance notes
The scroll runs on transform only, with will-change: transform, and stops while hovered, focused or paused. Browsers already stop painting a transform animation that is off-screen, so there is no separate off-screen pause.
The pause button's text stays at 16px minimum even where the fluid base size token drops to 14px.
Light mode and dark mode use the same logo pair toggle as the site logo, so there is no extra request in either mode.
Review scope: the shared logo marquee and the referral hero graphic
Test plan
composer run phpcs and composer run lint:php pass
npm run schema:validate, npm run lint:json and npm run security:scan pass
npm run patterns:escape reports nothing for logo-marquee.php (35 warnings are in existing files)
npm run theme:validate completes with warnings only (existing placeholder text)
npm run lint:scss: no issues in the changed files; the one error is the known one in phase-link-card-grid.scss
npm run build:css leaves no extra diff
Browser checks (Playwright): the scroll runs, pauses and resumes by click, Enter and Space, pauses on hover, stays a static row with reduced motion and with JavaScript off, and nothing overflows at 390px
The same logo never appears twice in view, sampled at 241 points of the loop at 1440px, 1280px, 1024px, 768px and 390px
Single-page Playwright standing specs on /testimonials/, light mode, four projects: 15 passed, 0 failed
Editor block validity on the Testimonials test page (337 blocks, 0 invalid)
Single-page Playwright on /testimonials/ in dark mode on this branch alone

meta:needs-changelog: adds a new pattern, script and stylesheet and removes the Logo Strip pattern. The entry is added to CHANGELOG.md on this branch.
Checklist
Related issues linked above
Existing button style, icon approach, enqueue pattern and tokens reused; no new tokens
Media linked from DEV, not copied into the theme
Accessibility standards met (screen reader not yet tested)
Added an animated client logo marquee with a pause/resume control. Scrolling pauses on hover or keyboard focus, and animation is disabled for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
Added a branded graphic for referral sections.
Changes
Replaced the static client logo strip pattern with the animated marquee. The previous strip pattern is no longer available.
Logo marquee
- Add the Section - Logo Marquee pattern: six client logos in a clipped track, a visually hidden H2 and a pause control
- Add logo-marquee.js to start the scroll, repeat the logos for a seamless loop and wire up the pause control
- Size the window to less than one set of logos so the same logo never shows twice at once
- Keep a static row when JavaScript is off or the visitor prefers reduced motion
- Pause on hover and focus, and let the visitor pause and play with a small text and icon control
Styles and wiring
- Add logo-marquee.scss and referral-sections.scss, with compiled CSS
- Add the referral hero graphic as a token-coloured mask that follows light and dark mode
- Register both bundles, the render markers and the marquee script in inc/animations.php
- Add both editor styles in functions.php and both bundles to the package.json build scripts
Replaced
- Remove the Section - Logo Strip pattern and its styles, now replaced by the marquee
Pause control
- Tighten the side padding from Spacing 10 to Spacing 5
- Use the theme's button line height token so the control is shorter
- Shrink the pause and play icon slightly, keeping the text at the 16px minimum
Styles
- Update logo-marquee.scss and recompile assets/css/logo-marquee.css
The PR replaces the static Logo Strip pattern with a JavaScript-enhanced logo marquee that supports pause controls and reduced-motion behavior. It adds a masked referral mark style and registers related assets for editor and conditional front-end loading. It also updates CSS build scripts and the changelog.
Adds a logo marquee pattern with six client logo items and a pause button. Styles control animation, pause behavior, and reduced-motion presentation. Removes the Logo Strip pattern and its logo-specific styles.
Marquee behavior and asset integration assets/js/logo-marquee.js, inc/animations.php, functions.php, package.json
Adds marquee initialization, sizing, pause controls, and reduced-motion synchronization. WordPress conditionally enqueues the script and registers the marquee stylesheet. CSS build and watch scripts include the new stylesheets.
Referral mark styling src/scss/structural/referral-sections.scss, assets/css/referral-sections.css, inc/animations.php
Adds the responsive, masked .ls-referral-mark graphic and registers its stylesheet for editor use and conditional loading on the Referrals page.

- Around line 107-110: In the animated .ls-logo-marquee__track state, reset the

the repeated logos or cause a jump at the loop boundary.

Repeat spacing
- Reset the block margins on the logo sets in the animated state
- The track is a flow layout, so the repeat sat 20px lower and jumped at the loop boundary
Repeat source
- Keep one logo set in the pattern and build the repeat in logo-marquee.js from the current set
- Editing or removing a logo can no longer leave a stale copy or unequal set widths
- The repeat keeps empty alt text and aria-hidden, and exists only while the scroll runs
Pause state
- Keep the visitor's pause choice when reduced motion is switched on and off while the page is open

- Keep the strip a static row when the window cannot show at least two logos, for example after all but one logo is removed
- Keep watching the logos so the scroll starts once the images have loaded or the set grows
