See the organisation-wide Automation Governance & Release Strategy for required rules.

Stack

Linked issues

Relates to #160 and Linear LSA-214 (improve: consultation-popup). It does not close the issue: this is the first of three PRs, and the remaining button patterns, the popup and form styling, and the DEV page content are still open.

Context

  • Severity/Impact: Medium. The LIVE consultation workflow changes when DEV goes live: visitors need an extra click, and every Form 4 entry records /free-consultation/ as its source page instead of the page the visitor was on.
  • Affected versions/environments: the redesigned ls-theme patterns on DEV. LIVE is not affected.

Reproduction

  • Steps: 1) Open a redesigned page on DEV, for example /services/design/. 2) Click the "Book a free consultation" button.
  • Expected vs Actual: on LIVE the Consultation popup opens in place. On DEV the button navigates to /free-consultation/.

Root Cause

The consultation buttons in the redesigned theme patterns are plain links to /free-consultation/. The Consultation popup (Popup Maker popup 48606, Form 4) already loads on every DEV page and opens from the CSS selector .pum-triggercta, but no button in these patterns carries that class.

Fix Summary

Branch 1 of 3: heroes, the header and the phase CTA. It adds the pum-triggercta class to the consultation buttons in 13 patterns, and keeps every button's existing /free-consultation/ link as the fallback.

  • Heroes: hero-split-glance, hero-split-index-card, hero-split-proof, phase-hero, service-hero, services-hero, solutions-hero, work-hero, work-single-hero.
  • Home and header: home-hero-static (the "Book a consultation" button), home-hero (only the inline "Book your consultation instead" link, not the whole paragraph) and header (the "Start a project" button).
  • Phase CTA: sections/phase-cta gets the trigger on "Book a consultation" only.
  • Class placement: on the wp-block-button wrapper, as in the existing trigger patterns (cta-split-buttons, hero-split-glance-support). Each wp:button block comment and its rendered class are updated together.
  • Fallback: unlike those two patterns, the buttons keep their href, so a button still reaches /free-consultation/ if the popup or JavaScript fails.

Scope and exclusions

  • Left as a plain link: the "Request a discovery workshop" button in phase-cta (/free-consultation/?type=discovery-workshop), because the popup form cannot carry the type. Outline and secondary buttons and other navigation links are untouched.
  • Not in this PR: the CTA band and section patterns (branch 2), the popup and Gravity Forms styling (branch 3), the inline Form 4 on /free-consultation/, and updating the existing DEV page content. Pages built from these patterns keep their own copy of the old buttons until their content is updated.
  • Review size: 14 files (13 patterns plus CHANGELOG.md), 25 added and 25 removed lines in the patterns. No generated files.

Verification

  • Tests added/updated to cover the bug (no automated tests exist for these patterns)
  • Manual verification: on the local site, all 12 pattern buttons on a test page open the Consultation popup without leaving the page, and the fallback href is intact (desktop, dark mode; checked by the maintainer)
  • Negative/edge cases checked locally: with the popup blocked the button falls back to /free-consultation/; tablet and mobile (checked by the maintainer)
  • php -l and vendor/bin/phpcs pass for the 13 patterns
  • npm run patterns:escape, npm run lint:json and npm run security:scan pass
  • Keyboard check of the popup (checked by the maintainer)
  • Screen reader check of the popup
  • CodeRabbit review

The header button could not be tested locally, because the local site has a saved header override that hides the repo change. DEV has no override.

Risk & Rollback

  • Risk level: Low. Each change is one class name on a button, and the link stays as the fallback.
  • Rollback plan: revert the commit. The buttons go back to plain links.

Changelog

meta:needs-changelog: restores the popup behaviour from the consultation buttons. The entry is in CHANGELOG.md on this branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Consultation buttons across the site now open the Consultation popup. Their existing consultation-page links remain available as a fallback if the popup or JavaScript is unavailable.
    • Button labels and destinations are unchanged. The “Request a discovery workshop” button remains a direct link, as the popup form does not support workshop requests. Other CTA links are unchanged.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: consultation buttons in the hero, header, and phase CTA patterns now open the Consultation popup (LSA-214). The changeset adds the pum-triggercta class to those buttons, and the title matches that intent. The title is specific and omits only minor details such as the fallback links and the excluded workshop button, which the description covers.

…header and phase CTA buttons (LSA-214)

Popup triggers
- Add the pum-triggercta class to the consultation buttons in the hero patterns
- Cover hero-split-glance, hero-split-index-card, hero-split-proof, phase-hero,
  service-hero, services-hero, solutions-hero, work-hero and work-single-hero
- Add it to the home-hero-static button and the header "Start a project" button
- Add it to the "Book your consultation instead" link in home-hero
- Add it to the "Book a consultation" button in phase-cta

Fallback
- Keep every button's /free-consultation/ link, so the button still works
if the popup or JavaScript fails
- Put the class on the wp-block-button wrapper, as in the existing trigger patterns

Left unchanged
- Keep the "Request a discovery workshop" button in phase-cta as a plain link,
because the popup form cannot carry ?type=discovery-workshop
- Leave the outline and secondary buttons and other navigation links alone
- Add no new SCSS, tokens or styles
Changelog
- Add the entry for the hero, header and phase CTA popup buttons
- Note that each button keeps its /free-consultation/ fallback link
- Note that the discovery workshop button stays a plain link
- Link the entry to PR #161
