Linked issues

Relates to Linear LSA-107 (design: history-page - Build History page). It does not close the issue: the Year by year section, the page content on DEV, SEO metadata and the manual QA are still open.

Design Overview

The two new section patterns for the About "History" page (/about/history/), built from the standalone prototype About History.html and the content doc 02-about-history.md.

  • Section - Scroll Timeline: "The LightSpeed Journey" as nine milestone nodes (a mono year, a dot on a vertical line and a flat card). As the page scrolls, a glowing gradient line fills down the timeline and each node fades up and lights its dot. The last node is a dashed, tinted "future" card. The editor, no-JS and reduced-motion views show every node lit and the full line.
  • Section - Stat Card Grid: "A Legacy of Open-Source Contribution" as four flat stat cards with figures in their own accent colours, above a closing line.
  • Reuse first: the timeline cards reuse Card - Plain and the dots reuse the existing lightspeed/dot Icon block. The History page's Hero, Our History, FAQ and CTA reuse hero-split-proof, split-intro-text-pair, solutions-split-faq and homepage-cta with page-level copy edits, so they add no files.

Design Files / References

Standalone HTML prototype About History.html and content doc 02-about-history.md. No Figma frames.

Changes

  • Scroll Timeline: patterns/sections/scroll-timeline.php, src/scss/structural/scroll-timeline.scss (compiled to assets/css/scroll-timeline.css) and assets/js/scroll-timeline.js. The SCSS owns only what JSON cannot express (the pseudo-element line, the scroll-driven fill, the dot's lit state, the reveal and the card hover). The year column width and the line position read one custom property.
  • Stat Card Grid: patterns/sections/stat-card-grid.php, no SCSS. The first stat reads "Websites built and rebuilt", following the content doc's claims table.
  • Gradient tokens: new gradient.accent-start and gradient.accent-end in theme.json (brand-600 to cta-800) and styles/dark.json (brand-400 to cta-500). All four pairings are at least 3:1 against their canvas.
  • Loading: inc/animations.php registers the scroll-timeline bundle (loads on /about/history/ and wherever the pattern renders) and enqueues the script through render_block, as the FAQ and contents-rail scripts do. functions.php adds the editor stylesheet and package.json adds the build entries.
  • Editor fix: the editor makes every block position: relative, which beat the dot rule, so the dot selector uses three classes and a z-index. Editor and front end now give the same geometry.
  • Homepage CTA button fix: the secondary button's no-arrow rule in src/scss/structural/homepage-cta.scss had the same specificity as the shared outline arrow, so whichever stylesheet loaded last won, and the arrow box showed (and clipped longer labels). The rules are now scoped under .ls-homepage-cta. This also corrects the homepage "Send a brief first" button.

Scope and exclusions

  • Year by year (core details grid with "Expand all") is the next PR in the stack.
  • Does not change the Hero, Our History, FAQ or CTA patterns beyond the CTA button fix above.
  • Review size: 13 files (including CHANGELOG.md), 542 added and 6 removed lines against develop. This is over the preferred 400 lines but under 800. assets/css/scroll-timeline.css and assets/css/homepage-cta.css are compiled output (3 added or changed lines between them).

Screenshots / video

None attached. The timeline spacing was measured on the local site at 1440px against the prototype's CSS values (year column, dot to card, card padding, node gap), all within 2px. The editor markup was inspected after the dot fix.

Accessibility / performance notes

  • Hidden and unlit states apply only once the script adds is-enhanced, so the timeline is fully visible without JS, in the editor and with prefers-reduced-motion. The script skips itself under reduced motion.
  • The script uses an IntersectionObserver and a passive, requestAnimationFrame-throttled scroll listener. A node already scrolled past (anchor link, reload mid-page) still shows.
  • Each node is an article because core list items cannot hold headings; the dot is decorative.
  • Known: a scan that starts mid-fade can report contrast failures for the half-transparent text. The standing accessibility scan did this intermittently on the local site; the scan helper in tests/helpers/accessibility.ts now waits for transitions to finish (added in design: history-page - Add the Details Card Grid pattern for Year by year (LSA-107) #133, which is stacked on this PR), and the scan passed in both modes on the stack.

Testing

  • npm run schema:validate and npm run lint:json pass
  • npm run security:scan passes
  • npm run patterns:escape reports nothing for the new patterns
  • npm run build:css leaves no diff
  • npm run theme:validate completes with warnings only
  • php -l and phpcs pass for both patterns, inc/animations.php and functions.php
  • Front end, 1440px: nine nodes, the line fills as you scroll, the dots sit on the line and the cards share one left edge
  • Block editor: all nine dots are absolutely positioned on the line and the cards align with the front end
  • Homepage CTA secondary button has no arrow box on /about/history/ and on the homepage
  • CodeRabbit CLI review run (see below)
  • Playwright standing suite plus the mobile-menu spec, run on the stacked design: history-page - Add the scroll timeline and stat card grid patterns (LSA-107) #132 + design: history-page - Add the Details Card Grid pattern for Year by year (LSA-107) #133 branch (the combined History page) with SINGLE_PAGE_URL on /about/history/, once in dark mode and once in light mode (page background confirmed each time) across Chromium, WebKit, Mobile Chrome, Mobile Safari and Tablet: 128 passed, 26 skipped, none failed in each mode (Firefox is not installed locally)
  • Dark and light mode visual checks on desktop, tablet and mobile, done by the maintainer
  • Screen reader tested
  • History page on DEV after deploy

CodeRabbit CLI findings, not applied: (1) a guard for a zero-height timeline in the script, valid but trivial; (2) the stat label "GNU Public License" follows the content doc's wording; (3) the lightspeed/dot Icon block's WordPress minimum, which the existing patterns already use the same way.

Stack

  • Position: PR 1 of 2
  • Issue/Epic: Linear LSA-107
  • Followed by: the Year by year PR (design/lsa-107-history-year-by-year)
  • Review scope: the Scroll Timeline and Stat Card Grid patterns, the gradient tokens, and the homepage CTA button fix

Changelog

meta:needs-changelog: adds two new patterns and fixes a visible button. The entry is in CHANGELOG.md on this branch.

…terns (LSA-107)

Added
- Section - Scroll Timeline pattern: nine milestone nodes, mono year, dot on a vertical line, Card - Plain cards and a dashed future card
- Scroll behaviour in assets/js/scroll-timeline.js: gradient line fills as you scroll and each node fades up and lights its dot
- Section - Stat Card Grid pattern: four flat stat cards with token-coloured figures and a closing line
- scroll-timeline.scss compiled to scroll-timeline.css, loaded on /about/history/ and wherever the pattern renders

Tokens
- New gradient.accent-start and gradient.accent-end tokens with real light and dark values
- Light: brand-600 to cta-800. Dark: brand-400 to cta-500

Progressive enhancement
- Hidden and unlit states only apply once the script adds is-enhanced
- Editor, no-JS and reduced-motion views show every node lit and the full line

Bug fix
- Homepage CTA secondary button kept the shared outline arrow box, which clipped longer labels
- Both rules had equal specificity, so animations.css won whenever it loaded after homepage-cta.css
- The no-arrow, padding and hover rules are now scoped under .ls-homepage-cta
- Also fixes the homepage "Send a brief first" button

Wiring
- package.json build scripts, inc/animations.php (bundle, render marker, script enqueue) and functions.php editor style
… design spacing (LSA-107)

Bug fix
- Year column collapsed beside long cards, so the line and dots landed on top of the cards
- The Group block's fixed flex size leaves flex-shrink at 1, so sizing now lives in the SCSS
- Year column and line position read one value (10.5rem)
- Redundant fixed-width block settings removed from the pattern

Spacing
- Year text sits 26px back from the dot (spacing 40)
- Dot to card is 42px (spacing 70)
- Card padding is 26px on all sides (spacing 40)
- Gap between nodes is 37px (spacing 60)
- Title to text gap is 8px (spacing 10)
- Header to timeline gap is spacing 80
- Measured against the HTML design at 1440px, all within 2px

Files
- patterns/sections/scroll-timeline.php
- src/scss/structural/scroll-timeline.scss
- assets/css/scroll-timeline.css (compiled)
…itor (LSA-107)

Bug fix
- In the editor, every block gets position: relative from the editor stylesheet, which beat the dot rule
- The dots stayed in the flex row, pushing the cards right and leaving the dots off the line
- Cards painted over the dots, so only the last (see-through) card showed one

Fix
- Dot rule uses a three-class selector so absolute positioning wins in the editor
- z-index keeps the dots above the cards
- Unlit-state and mobile overrides use the same selector
- Editor and front end now match: dots centred on the line, cards at the same left edge on all 9 nodes

Files
- src/scss/structural/scroll-timeline.scss
- assets/css/scroll-timeline.css (compiled)

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds localized History timeline and statistic-card patterns. It adds timeline styling, conditional scroll enhancement, gradient tokens, editor integration, and scoped homepage CTA outline-button rules.

Changes: History page patterns

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timeline pattern and presentation
patterns/sections/scroll-timeline.php, src/scss/structural/scroll-timeline.scss, assets/css/scroll-timeline.css, theme.json, styles/dark.json, package.json, functions.php, CHANGELOG.md
The pattern renders localized milestones, including a future milestone. Timeline styles define progress, reveal states, responsive layout, and reduced-motion behavior. Theme settings add gradient endpoints, and the CSS build and editor stylesheet include the timeline styles.
Conditional scroll enhancement
inc/animations.php, assets/js/scroll-timeline.js
Rendered timeline blocks trigger deferred script loading. The script reveals nodes and updates scroll progress unless reduced motion is requested.
Stat-card section pattern
patterns/sections/stat-card-grid.php
The pattern defines four localized statistics and renders them in a responsive card grid with introductory and closing text.

Homepage CTA styles

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scope CTA outline-button rules
src/scss/structural/homepage-cta.scss, assets/css/homepage-cta.css, CHANGELOG.md
The outline-button selector now requires the .ls-homepage-cta ancestor. This scopes arrow-removal and padding rules to the CTA component.

Bug fix
- Section - Stat Card Grid had its own 100/100 padding (64px at 1440px), so it was taller than the sections around it
- It now uses the shared Content Band style (spacing 80 top, 90 bottom, 48px and 56px at 1440px) with its background swapped to surface.card, as Services does
- Matches the Timeline and Year by year sections on the History page

Conflicts
- package.json: keep develop's lint:scss script and add scroll-timeline to watch:css
- CHANGELOG.md: keep both the LSA-107 and LSA-191 entries
