With computerUseTool() from @tanstack/ai-openai/tools, the computer use loop stops after the first action. The model's computer_call never becomes a tool call, so the tool never runs, and no computer_call_output goes back. This PR reads computer_call as a call to the computer_use_preview tool, and sends the result back as computer_call_output with the screenshot.

🎯 Changes

  • Read the call. A computer_call output item is now a tool call to computer_use_preview. Its input is { action, pending_safety_checks }, as the model sent them.
  • Replay the call. The assistant tool call goes back as a computer_call input item, with the same item id, action, and safety checks.
  • Send the result. The tool result goes back as computer_call_output. The first image of the result is the computer_screenshot (a data URL, a URL, or a file id).
  • Only computer results. Only a computer result reads the screenshot. The result of a shell, local_shell, or apply_patch call skips the screenshot read, as on main.
  • Safety checks. When the call does not fail, the output acknowledges the safety checks of the call. When the call fails (for example, a person did not allow the action), they stay unacknowledged.
  • Docs. The computerUseTool section of the OpenAI adapter page shows a working loop: an execute that asks a person when there are safety checks, runs the action, and returns the screenshot. The provider tools page lists computerUseTool with the other tools that the app runs.

The code follows the existing apply_patch and local_shell code in responses-user-tools.ts.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Root cause

Issue. An app that gives computerUseTool() to chat() gets one computer_call from the model, and then the run ends. The tool execute never runs, and the model never gets a screenshot.

Cause. readUserExecutedCall in packages/openai-base/src/adapters/responses-user-tools.ts reads only apply_patch_call, local_shell_call, and shell_call. A computer_call returns null, so the stream emits no TOOL_CALL_START or TOOL_CALL_END for it. userToolRequestItem and userToolResultItem also have no computer_call or computer_call_output shape.

Fix. readUserExecutedCall turns a computer_call into a call to computer_use_preview, the name of the tool that computerUseTool() makes. The replay functions send it back as computer_call and computer_call_output. The adapter gives userToolResultItem the screenshot (from convertContentPartToInput) and the failure flag of the tool message.

Possible alternatives

  • Acknowledge the safety checks on every result. This is four lines less code. It was not taken because a failed call (for example, a person did not allow the action) then tells OpenAI that the checks are accepted.
  • Build the screenshot URL in responses-user-tools.ts. It makes the adapter change smaller. It was not taken because it copies the data URL and file id logic of convertContentPartToInput.

Testing

Commands run:

  1. pnpm --filter "@tanstack/openai-base^..." --workspace-concurrency=2 run build, then pnpm --dir packages/openai-base run test:types. It passes.

  2. vitest run tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts tests/responses-text.test.ts tests/replay-parity.test.ts tests/responses-empty-completed-output.test.ts tests/shell-tool.test.ts tests/provider-tool-dispatch.test.ts --maxWorkers=2 in packages/openai-base. 174 tests pass.

  3. test:oxlint of openai-base (no errors), oxfmt --check on the changed files, kiira check on the two changed docs pages (48 snippets pass), and pnpm test:docs (no broken links).

  4. After the CodeRabbit review, a new test "reads no screenshot from the result of another app tool" sends a local_shell result that has a file from another provider. Without the source change, the screenshot read throws and the test fails. With it, the test passes. computer-use-loop and replay-parity (45 tests), test:types, oxlint, and oxfmt --check pass.

  5. After the second CodeRabbit review: a new E2E route and spec, openai-computer-use-wire. aimock 1.34.0 cannot send a computer_call, so the route answers with a custom fetch, like the other wire specs. I type-checked the route with the TypeScript of testing/e2e (no errors in the new files), and ran oxfmt --check and oxlint on them.

Not run locally: pnpm test:pr, E2E, and coverage. CI runs them. I type-checked the new E2E route. The spec runs in CI.

Repro (bugfix-pr Gate 1). I wrote tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts. It runs chat() with a mock Responses client: the first response is a computer_call with a safety check, the second is a text answer. I ran it with vitest run computer-use-loop --maxWorkers=2 in a detached worktree of main (7095ebbf1) and in a detached worktree of this branch (07228a73a).

On main, it fails:

 ❯ |@tanstack/openai-base| tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts (2 tests | 2 failed) 17ms
× runs the computer call and sends the screenshot back 15ms
× does not acknowledge the safety checks of a failed call 1ms
FAIL tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts > computer use loop > runs the computer call and sends the screenshot back
AssertionError: expected "vi.fn()" to be called once, but got 0 times
FAIL tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts > computer use loop > does not acknowledge the safety checks of a failed call
TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'find')
 Test Files 1 failed (1)
      Tests 2 failed (2)

On this branch, it passes:

 Test Files 1 passed (1)
      Tests 2 passed (2)

Manual test:

  1. On main, copy packages/openai-base/tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts from this branch. Run pnpm --dir packages/openai-base exec vitest run tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts. The two loop tests fail: the tool never runs, and there is no second request.
  2. On this branch, run the same command. All three tests pass.
  3. Read the second request in the first test: it has the computer_call and the computer_call_output with the screenshot and the acknowledged check.

How this PR makes testing easy: tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts runs the full loop through chat() with a mock client, so a reviewer can run it with no API key. testing/e2e/tests/openai-computer-use-wire.spec.ts runs the same loop through the real OpenAI SDK, against a custom fetch.

Risk / rollback

Low. Only a computer_call item takes the new path. The other tools that the app runs keep their code. To undo, revert this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for OpenAI computer-use calls, including action execution, screenshot responses, and pending safety checks.
    • Successful calls acknowledge approved safety checks; failed calls omit screenshots and acknowledgements.
    • Computer-use requests and results are now correctly exchanged through the Responses API.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance and examples for executing computer-use actions, handling approval, and returning screenshots.
    • Updated provider tool documentation to include computer-use workflows.

A computer_call from the model is now a tool call to
computer_use_preview, with the action and the pending safety checks as
its input. The tool result goes back as computer_call_output, with the
first image of the result as the screenshot. When the call does not
fail, the output acknowledges the safety checks of the call.

📝 Walkthrough

The OpenAI Responses adapter now handles computer_call items as application-executed tools. It passes validated actions and safety checks to the tool, then returns screenshot data and success-dependent safety-check acknowledgements.

Changes: OpenAI computer-use call loop

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recognize computer calls and run application tools
packages/openai-base/src/adapters/responses-user-tools.ts, docs/adapters/openai.md, docs/tools/provider-tools.md
The adapter recognizes computer_use_preview calls, validates actions and safety checks, and prepares them for application execution. The documentation shows approval handling and screenshot results.
Return computer-call outputs
packages/openai-base/src/adapters/responses-user-tools.ts, packages/openai-base/src/adapters/responses-text.ts, packages/openai-base/tests/computer-use-loop.test.ts, .changeset/openai-computer-call-loop.md
The adapter returns computer_call_output items with screenshot data and acknowledges safety checks only on success. Tests cover successful and failed execution, plus local-shell output containing an image from another provider.
Exercise the OpenAI wire format
testing/e2e/src/routes/api.openai-computer-use-wire.ts, testing/e2e/src/routeTree.gen.ts, testing/e2e/tests/openai-computer-use-wire.spec.ts
The end-to-end route mocks streamed Responses API calls and records request bodies. The test verifies the computer-call input, safety check, echoed action, and screenshot output.

Convert screenshots only for computer results.

If a shell, local_shell, or apply_patch result contains a file-source image, this new call invokes convertContentPartToInput. An adapter without file-source support throws before userToolResultItem can serialize that non-computer result. Previously, those result paths did not convert an image to a screenshot. Call screenshotOf only when the owner is computer_use_preview.

Update the `userToolResultItem` call so `screenshotOf` is invoked only when
`owner` is `computer_use_preview`; preserve the existing behavior for shell,

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not treat a missing screenshot as a successful observation.

If an execute handler succeeds but returns text or an empty result, screenshotOf supplies no image and this branch still acknowledges the safety checks. The next computer-use turn receives no view of the screen. Require an image for a successful computer result, or treat the missing image as a failed result before acknowledging checks. OpenAI’s computer-use loop calls for a screenshot after executing actions. (developers.openai.com)

The result of a shell, local_shell, or apply_patch call no longer goes through the screenshot read. A file from another provider in such a result threw there, but the result never sends an image.

Add E2E coverage for the computer-use loop.

CONTRIBUTING.md requires E2E coverage for every behavior change. This PR adds only unit coverage and no E2E fixture or scenario. No exception for an unrepresentable computer_call appears in the applicable guidance.

If aimock cannot emit the native OpenAI computer_call, add a deterministic repository-owned E2E mount, as the suite does for other aimock gaps, and cover the loop and screenshot replay there.

aimock cannot send a computer_call, so the route answers with a custom fetch. The spec checks the tool input, and that the next request sends the computer_call and its computer_call_output with the screenshot and the acknowledged safety check.
