Outcome

OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, OpenRouter, and Hermes Provider currently rely on the shared inference.local route being retired by OpenShell. This change attaches the selected provider to the selected sandbox and configures agents to call its native API endpoint. Existing commands, supported models, request formats, and credential protection remain the contract.

Reason

The OpenShell upgrade retires the shared inference route. Existing fixed hosted providers need sandbox-specific routing while preserving credential protection and recovery.

Related issues

Refs #12589. Part of #12558. Slice 1 (#12562) has merged; this PR targets main and does not depend on Slices 3 or 4.

Changes

  • Extend the native NVIDIA mechanism with NemoClaw-owned profiles for the remaining fixed hosted providers. Preserve OpenRouter headers and existing model compatibility.
  • Keep credentials inside OpenShell's provider boundary. Record ownership before attachment, observe uncertain writes before retrying, and retain recovery state when cleanup is unconfirmed.
  • Make status, doctor, connect, and readiness inspect the recorded native selection. Native failures do not fall back to the shared route. A missing or invalid attachment receipt now gives a recreate instruction, and failed switches no longer claim that an unchanged shared route was restored.
  • Use the stricter reviewed Slack dependency patcher in both archive and installed-plugin paths. Remove the unused weaker patcher. Correct the Hermes raw-secret test so it reaches credential validation with a valid integrity hash.
  • Reuse existing Hermes and OpenClaw live-test owners for explicit, representative hosted qualification. Require an explicit model and one selected credential. Reject a hosted model paired with the unrelated native-runtime producer before planning work. These targets remain outside default and release selection.
  • Use canonical main’s explicit Pi source-publication contract. CI still requires receipt source parity, image identity, and runtime authority; publication does not waive qualification.
  • Update provider routing and recovery guidance. Custom endpoints, local providers, global shared-route retirement, and the OpenShell version upgrade remain outside this slice.

Verification

Current candidate: 5533741c5a2a6a04888b41f9c1788c836643e293. Prekshi's restart-probe repair is preserved. Her latest fix reuses verified gateway credentials during rebuild without attempting an unauthenticated host request; sandbox readiness still checks the attachment.

Current behavioral CI passed all twelve test shards, static checks, and typechecks. Current image validation passed both Pi platforms and the actual Docker and Podman activation jobs. Trusted growth validation also passed after the exact maintainer budget approval.

The preceding integration repair restored NVIDIA policy loading through the existing profile owner, preserved strict policy checks, and moved credential-binding tests unchanged into their existing owner. Focused tests, full CLI types, architecture checks, normal commit and publication checks passed before publication.

Supplemental Brev development-checkout validation (2026-10-09)

One approved live run used exact combined candidate 3437363eecd455b5c21ca8c8d85cc2e820cdfa44, combining this PR's 5533741c5a2a6a04888b41f9c1788c836643e293 with gateway/recovery PR #12626 at a5c74e6c36233edd9652b832bac813aea7210e9b. Provider/model: NVIDIA native attachment, nvidia/nemotron-3.5-lightning-30b-a3b, https://integrate.api.nvidia.com/v1.

  • Passed: hosted preflight, fresh onboarding, canonical interactive DCode chat (13/13 checks), blocked-memfd QuickJS and REPL restoration, headless PONG, and four resource-limit paths.
  • Passed: destructive rebuild to thread-opt-in and the subsequent failure-cleanup rebuild to disabled approval/observability. Both replacement sandboxes reached Ready; the earlier missing-host-credential HTTP401 and gateway-registration failures did not recur.
  • Passed: public stop/start retained sandbox identity and a durable workspace marker; limits, blocked-memfd QuickJS, readiness, and a real PONG passed afterward.
  • Failed: canonical C12 multi-tool workflow. After one shell command, write_file was auto-denied because the approval classifier did not respond within 20 seconds; the workflow then hit its completion timeout. Remaining C12 tool assertions and network/credential boundary checks were not reached. The classifier's underlying timeout cause is not yet established. No blind retry was performed.

The owned test sandbox and container were removed; the existing VM, unrelated sandboxes, and diagnostic backups were retained.

This is partial evidence for the combined development checkout, not a full live pass, this PR alone, baked Launchable qualification, or representative coverage of the other hosted providers. The existing review and qualification gates below remain applicable.

Remaining gates

  • Current Advisor produced all nine findings and nine E2E reports. Seven specialists were clear; Customer and Operability repeated the start-receipt mismatch concern. The actual gateway/connect health path rejects that mismatch before inference, with a recreate diagnostic. The evidence-backed disposition is recorded, but the failed Advisor gate still needs disposition. No additional E2E selectors were requested; existing qualification requirements remain.
  • Complete CodeRabbit coverage is not established. Its last published review checkpoint is 4d258c6; incremental recovery failed and the supported full-review fallback exceeded its file limit. A green context and zero unresolved threads do not establish review of the current changes.
  • Fresh representative real-provider qualification requires deployment of the implemented fixed-hosted selector to trusted main, an approved disposable environment, credential-source mappings and supported model IDs. The candidate already contains the manual selector and existing Hermes/OpenClaw test owners. No real-provider dispatch has been performed. Image activation does not prove a fresh hosted-provider inference request.

Review notes

The two-file repair was reviewed locally for credential custody, provider identity rejection, and preservation of host-key validation. Current-head CI passed; Advisor disposition and complete CodeRabbit coverage remain pending. No complete live passing result or human approval is claimed. The diff contains no secrets.

Ownership, credential custody and refusal before destructive rebuild are the sensitive boundaries. Native export supports NVIDIA, OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter and Hermes Provider; Gemini export is explicitly refused by the V1 contract while Gemini inference remains supported. Custom endpoints, local providers and global shared-route retirement remain outside this slice.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Hermes Provider, and NVIDIA hosted inference use native endpoints through sandbox-attached OpenShell providers. Custom, local, and Model Router selections continue to use the shared inference route.
    • Onboarding, provider switching, readiness checks, status reporting, and configuration export support hosted-provider routes. OpenRouter requests include required attribution headers.
    • Added an optional, manually selected workflow for hosted-provider inference qualification, with model selection.
  • Security

    • Provider credentials remain outside the sandbox and are supplied through validated references for approved requests. Runtime checks reject invalid credential configurations.
  • Documentation

    • Updated setup, routing, troubleshooting, and security guidance. OpenRouter and migrated provider paths are marked as awaiting live qualification.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This PR generalizes fixed hosted inference across provider profiles, credentials, sandbox ownership, readiness, export, and agent configuration. It adds manual fixed-hosted E2E qualification and changes local and CI Pi receipt source-parity checks.

Changes

Native Hosted Inference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Profiles, provider lifecycle, and ownership
src/lib/inference/native-hosted/*, managed-inference/provider-profiles/*, src/lib/state/registry/*
Six hosted profiles define endpoints, credentials, and provider identities. Shared code validates identity and manages attachment and authority receipts. Registry persistence supports profile-specific authority and legacy NVIDIA receipt fields.
Onboarding, switching, and credential operations
src/lib/onboard/*, src/lib/actions/inference-set.ts, src/lib/actions/credentials-*, src/lib/hermes-provider-auth.ts
Onboarding and inference selection create or reuse hosted providers, attach them to sandboxes, and carry receipts through registry updates. Switching handles prior attachment detachment, rollback, and pending detach records. Credential add and reset use profile-specific checks.
Readiness, export, and agent configuration
src/lib/actions/sandbox/*, src/lib/adapters/config/*, src/lib/domain/config/*, agents/*, scripts/*, Dockerfile
Readiness, doctor, status, probes, and export validate hosted attachments and use native endpoints. Agent configuration uses profile credential references and OpenRouter attribution headers. Hermes adds runtime credential validation; Pi adds a credential resolver and profile-based configuration.
Supporting tests and documentation
test/*, docs/*, ci/platform-matrix.json
Tests cover provider lifecycle, credentials, ownership, routing, readiness, and export. Documentation describes native fixed-hosted routes and shared inference.local routes. Platform notes mark OpenRouter and migrated managed inference as caveated pending live qualification.

Fixed-Hosted E2E Qualification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Qualification planning and workflow boundary
.github/workflows/e2e*.yaml, tools/e2e/*
Workflows accept an optional hosted model and add a fixed-hosted matrix. Planning validates target metadata and model format, then selects the provider credential. The workflows pass credentials only under trusted-run conditions.
Provider-switch qualification coverage
test/e2e/live/*inference-switch*, test/e2e/support/*
Hermes and OpenClaw qualification helpers support hosted profiles, provider-specific requests, credentials, and attachment evidence. The fixed-hosted targets remain outside default and release-required inventories.

Pi Qualification Receipts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Local and CI receipt validation
scripts/checks/pi-qualification-receipt-refresh.mts, ci/pi-agent-qualification-v1-*.json, src/lib/agent/candidate-authority.ts, .agents/references/development.md
Local checks can validate receipt authority without source parity when no comparison revision is supplied. CI requires refreshed matching receipts for changed Pi image inputs. Qualification records and accepted receipt digests are updated.

[P1] Preserve native hosted-provider authority in the restart inference probe

Verified on current head 1dd440c: checkStartedSandboxInference in src/lib/actions/sandbox/start.ts:160-167 constructs the probe input without nativeProvider, even when the sandbox has a valid native-provider attachment. The shared probe in src/lib/actions/sandbox/inference-invocation-probe.ts:89-95 consequently selects https://inference.local/v1 for hosted providers instead of the native endpoint. A working native sandbox can therefore start successfully but have nemoclaw <name> start report inference failure against the wrong route. This conflicts with #12558's requirement that health checks exercise the agent's native path.

Please propagate the native selection from validated persisted attachment authority into the start probe, using this PR's hosted-provider ownership model and preserving legacy shared-route behavior when appropriate. Add regression coverage for a native hosted sandbox reaching its native endpoint after start, including NVIDIA compatibility, and retain coverage for legacy selections.

Live evidence is from NemoClaw candidate 061c21e, NOT this PR head: on the existing Brev instance, using Nemotron Super and the same sandbox/model/probe implementation, omitting the native setting selected https://inference.local/v1/chat/completions and returned HTTP 503. Preserving nativeProvider: true selected https://integrate.api.nvidia.com/v1/chat/completions and the probe passed. Both interactive sessions and headless chat had also passed on that candidate. The diagnostic sandbox was cleaned up. A local public-start reproduction separately confirmed that the setting is dropped.

This finding concerns restart validation. It does not claim that the historical intermittent chat or rebuild failures have the same cause, or that this PR has received live validation.
