Crypto Trading Platform — Case Study (Docs-only)

Cover

NDA note: This repository contains no source code. Client name, URLs, identifiers, and sensitive metrics are anonymised or shown as ranges. Screenshots (if any) are redacted.

Overview

  • One-liner: Architected and stabilised a trading web app with secure APIs, improved performance, and stronger operational visibility.
  • Project type: Web-based crypto trading platform (client + API + managed data layer)
  • Audience: Retail traders + internal operations
  • My role: Senior Full-Stack Architect (hands-on delivery: architecture, implementation guidance, reviews, hardening)
  • Engagement: ~8–12 weeks (timeboxed delivery)
  • Core stack: React, Node.js/Express, Firebase (Auth + DB), REST APIs, CI/CD
  • Focus areas: performance, reliability, security, and operational visibility

Quick Links

  • Architecture notes: docs/architecture.md
  • Screenshots (redacted): docs/screens/

Problem

  • Users needed a responsive trading experience with near real-time market data and reliable order/state handling.
  • The existing build suffered from performance bottlenecks, inconsistent state management, and limited observability.
  • Security and compliance expectations required stronger access control, safe data handling, and audit-friendly logging.

Goals (Success Criteria)

  • Improve perceived UI responsiveness across core trading flows (charts, watchlists, orders, positions).
  • Reduce production errors and shorten incident triage time with better logging and diagnostics.
  • Harden authentication/authorisation and API boundaries (validation, rate limiting, sanitised logs).
  • Enable repeatable deployments with environment separation and CI/CD checks.

Constraints (NDA / Security)

  • No client name, URLs, credentials, internal endpoints, or proprietary trading logic.
  • Screenshots are blurred/covered for any identifying UI elements, user data, balances, or IDs.
  • Metrics are expressed as ranges where disclosure could be sensitive.

Solution Summary

  • Designed a clear separation of concerns: Web Client ↔ API Layer ↔ Data/Services, with predictable data flows.
  • Stabilised client state + request lifecycle to avoid race conditions, stale views, and unnecessary re-renders.
  • Hardened API surface: input validation, rate limiting, safe error handling, and sanitised structured logging.
  • Improved performance through request deduping, caching strategies, and rendering optimisations.
  • Added operational visibility: traceable logs, actionable error reporting, and deployment-time checks.

Architecture (High-level)

  • Diagram (optional): docs/architecture.png
  • Components
    • Client (Web): React UI, data visualisation, user actions (orders/positions)
    • API: Node.js/Express REST endpoints, validation, business rules boundary
    • Data Layer: Firebase Auth + DB (role-based access + structured persistence)
    • Integrations: market data provider(s), notifications/alerts, optional analytics

Key Technical Decisions

  • Client state strategy: simplified state boundaries and normalised data to prevent inconsistent UI across fast updates.
  • API boundary hardening: centralised validation + sanitised errors to reduce security risk and improve debuggability.
  • Observability-first logging: structured logs with safe fields only, enabling faster triage without exposing data.
  • Performance approach: reduced redundant requests and expensive renders; prioritised “hot paths” (orders/positions).

Challenges & How I Solved Them

  • Rapid data updates vs UI stability → introduced controlled update cadence + memoisation to keep charts/feeds smooth.
  • Error triage in production → structured logging + clearer failure modes to pinpoint root causes faster.
  • Security constraints under time pressure → enforced least-privilege access, validation layers, and safe logging by default.

Results / Impact (Anonymised)

  • Performance: key user interactions felt ~30–50% faster (profiling + qualitative user feedback).
  • Reliability: fewer recurring issues and faster incident triage due to improved logging/alerts.
  • Delivery: more predictable releases via CI/CD checks and environment separation.

What I Would Improve Next

  • Add automated performance budgets (CI checks for bundle size / render timings).
  • Expand automated test coverage for critical order/position flows.
  • Introduce more granular monitoring dashboards and alert thresholds (non-sensitive metrics only).
  • Improve role-based access audit trails and self-serve admin tooling (where permitted).

Evidence (Redacted)

  • Screenshots: docs/screens/
  • Architecture notes: docs/architecture.md
