Unblocks tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328 / #7331 phase 5: the host cannot call Plan2 for an unbounded set of profiles/agents because sandbox scopes are init-only, capped at 128, and each scope's subject must equal the single audit scope's subject.

What changes

  • Contract 1.19 (additive; a 1.19 host refuses a 1.18 module): RegisterSandboxScope2 and RetireSandboxScope2, with SandboxScopeReceipt2 carrying the subject handle (as AuditSink2 receives it) only when the registration asks, never on retirement. Mirrors runtime approval scopes (1.17/1.18).
  • Engine: the scope table is now runtime-mutable. Registration validates exactly like init; an identical repeat is unchanged; the same identity with other facts conflicts; initialized scopes can never be retired.
  • Bounds without widening: at most 65,536 live scopes. A full table refuses; no live scope is ever evicted, so a subject's ceilings are never dropped or replaced. Runtime scopes hold at most 8 staged/active artifacts (initialized scopes keep their share of 1024), so one subject cannot exhaust another's capacity.
  • Retirement removes the scope and discards every pending and active artifact it issued, atomically with respect to stage (purge under the table lock), so nothing of a retired scope can be checked or consumed, including after the same identity registers again.
  • Audit: each runtime scope records plans and consumes on the host AuditSink2 under its own subject and host-persisted stream (never a native journal). The stream-pin rules of runtime approval scopes (live subject keeps its stream; retired subject keeps it for an hour) are extracted into a shared StreamPins, used by approvals and sandbox; the approval pin test now sets pins.max/ttl instead of the old fields. Several scope identities may share a subject; its stream is released when the last retires.
  • A scope's approval_scope_id must name a live approval scope of the same subject.
  • MODULE.md and README document the contract.

Verification

cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -D warnings, cargo test --all-features, rustdoc -D warnings all pass locally. Per-file line coverage of the new/changed files is at or above 90% (adapter_sandbox_scopes.rs 96, stream_pins.rs 100, engine.rs 99, registry.rs 97, sandbox_scopes.rs 100).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Contract 1.19 adds host-managed runtime sandbox scopes, which can be registered for subjects and retired when no longer needed.
    • Each runtime scope supports up to 8 staged or active artifacts, and the registry supports up to 65,536 live scopes. Retiring a scope discards its artifacts and frees its registry slot.
    • Subjects retain their audit-stream association for one hour after retirement; scopes for the same subject must use a consistent stream.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the README and contract documentation with runtime sandbox-scope details.

…t 1.19)

Adds RegisterSandboxScope2 and RetireSandboxScope2 so a host serving many
subjects plans sandboxes per subject without growing the init-only scope
table. Runtime scopes audit on their own host-persisted stream under the
stream-pin rules of runtime approval scopes (now a shared StreamPins), the
table is bounded without evicting live scopes, and retirement discards every
artifact the scope issued.

📝 Walkthrough

Contract 1.19 adds runtime sandbox-scope registration and retirement. The sandbox engine tracks scopes by ID and purges artifacts when a runtime scope retires. The module adapter routes audit events through scope-specific clients and tracks subject-to-stream pins.

Changes: Runtime sandbox scopes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contract 1.19 wire types and compatibility
MODULE.md, README.md, crates/tinysecurity-bus/src/*, crates/tinysecurity-bus/tests/*
The bus crate adds registration and retirement request and receipt types, method names, and contract version 1.19. Documentation and wire tests cover the new contract.
Engine registration and artifact lifecycle
crates/tinysecurity-sandbox/src/engine.rs, crates/tinysecurity-sandbox/src/error/*, crates/tinysecurity-sandbox/src/registry.rs, crates/tinysecurity-sandbox/src/runtime_scopes_tests.rs
The engine stores scopes by ID and supports runtime registration and retirement. Retirement purges issued artifacts. The registry enforces runtime and initialized-scope artifact limits, and tests cover validation, capacity, and retirement.
Shared subject stream pins
crates/tinysecurity-module/src/stream_pins*, crates/tinysecurity-module/src/approval_callbacks*
The module adds a shared subject-to-stream pin registry and uses it for approval-scope admission and release. Tests cover stream validation, retention, and capacity.
Host registration, auditing, and retirement
crates/tinysecurity-module/src/adapter.rs, crates/tinysecurity-module/src/adapter_sandbox*, crates/tinysecurity-module/src/adapter_tests.rs
The adapter exposes host-only registration and retirement operations. Runtime registration validates scope and audit configuration, creates a per-scope audit client, and tracks the subject’s stream pin. Retirement removes the client and releases the pin when no remaining scope uses it. Tests cover audit routing, approval links, and lifecycle behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f5365

Busy runtime tenants could temporarily deny sandbox planning to the operator's initialized scopes until their artifacts expire. The effect is bounded and self-recovering, so the change is mergeable, but the global cap should reserve capacity for initialized scopes before or soon after merge.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f5365

Runtime scope management introduces two material risks: an in-flight plan can carry approval authority across retirement and replacement, and aggregate runtime demand can exhaust capacity needed by unrelated subjects. Authenticated host access, audit requirements, expiry, and current-policy validation substantially constrain the exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: An in-flight host-network plan can carry approval authority across retirement into a replacement registration. reserve_host_network captures the old approval scope before awaiting approval consumption. During that wait, the host can retire and recreate the sandbox ID for the same subject with another approval link or no link. Staging then checks only the sandbox ID and subject, not the originating scope incarnation. Subsequent validation recomputes the effective plan but does not bind the reservation to the current approval link, so an otherwise matching plan can remain usable. Already-staged artifacts are correctly purged; this concern concerns an unstaged candidate crossing the lifecycle boundary, not replay of an issued artifact.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The eight-artifact runtime limit is per scope, but all scopes share a 16,384-row registry without reserved initialized capacity. Workloads occupying 2,048 admitted runtime scopes can fill that pool and prevent untouched runtime or initialized scopes from staging plans. Multiple scope identities may belong to one subject, so the limit is not a subject-wide quota. This newly weakens cross-subject availability isolation relative to the base's fixed initialized shares. Trusted-host admission and fail-closed rejection constrain the attack path, but do not provide the documented capacity isolation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The approval-transition concern is confined to a reused sandbox identity and matching subject, within artifact expiry and unchanged policy generation. Shared-capacity exhaustion can affect all sandbox subjects using the same engine, including initialized scopes, but requires sufficient runtime scopes admitted by the trusted host. Neither path establishes access to another service, environment, credential store, or tenant's data.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The security-sensitive lifecycle interleaving is: resolve a host-network candidate using approval link A; wait for A's consumption; retire and recreate the sandbox registration with another link or no link; then stage and activate the old candidate. Current effective-policy validation limits this path, but does not distinguish scope incarnations or validate the reservation against the replacement approval link.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The lifecycle methods run through the authenticated service wrapper, which rejects absent or mismatched authenticated senders against an immutable unique peer binding. Supplied approval links are checked against the registered subject. Audit callbacks target the pinned peer and verify exact receipts. These controls depend on external transport authenticity and honest durable persistence by the host; the supplied proof gap leaves those implementations unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Retirement and staging coordinate through the scope-table lock, while purge, activation, checking, and consumption serialize through the registry mutex. Completed retirement invalidates stored pending and active artifacts, and their nonempty issued IDs prevent direct restaging. Failed pending operations are discarded by a drop guard. These controls contain ordinary failure and replay, but do not cover candidates still outside the registry.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind native candidates and approval reservations to a non-reusable scope incarnation, preserving that binding across asynchronous approval work and checking it before staging and consumption.
  • proposed — Reserve initialized artifact capacity and define fair runtime admission or subject-wide quotas so that aggregate scope demand cannot consume another subject's intended allocation.

A stream kept steady, neat, and kind.

New paths wait where safe rules grow,

When a host-network plan is in flight, its runtime scope can be retired after reserve_host_network consumes an approval and immediately re-registered under the same ID, subject, and stream with a changed or removed approval_scope_id. This check accepts the old artifact because it compares only the scope ID and subject; the retirement purge occurred before the artifact was staged, and later validation does not bind the artifact to approval_scope_id. The old approval can therefore activate and be consumed under the replacement scope. Bind candidates to the exact scope incarnation or immutable facts so retirement invalidates every in-flight candidate.
