Follow-up to #22, which merged before this commit landed on its branch.

  • Rechecks authority after a scope is published.
  • Makes scope retirement retryable.
  • Documents that retirement is runtime-only.

Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Retiring a runtime approval scope now preserves its registration if releasing it fails, allowing retirement to be retried.
    • Approval requests are denied if the scope or grant used to approve them is revoked before the approval completes.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that initialized approval scopes cannot be retired; they must be replaced.

📝 Walkthrough

The approval engine restores scope ownership when subject release fails and rechecks automatic-approval scope posture after an approved-row write. Documentation clarifies that initialized scopes must be replaced rather than retired.

Changes: Approval Scope Safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scope retirement and failed-release recovery
MODULE.md, crates/tinysecurity-bus/src/approval_scopes.rs, crates/tinysecurity-approval/src/engine.rs, crates/tinysecurity-approval/src/engine_scopes_tests.rs
Documentation limits retirement to runtime scopes. When subject release fails, the engine restores the scope entry and returns the error. Tests verify that the subject remains reserved and that retirement can be retried.
Automatic-approval revalidation during begin
crates/tinysecurity-approval/src/engine.rs, crates/tinysecurity-approval/src/engine_scopes_tests.rs
The engine checks automatic-approval scope posture before publishing and after finishing an approved row. A race test verifies that revoking a tool grant during the row write causes begin to return Denied.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Stop waiting if begin exits before CAS.

If the spawned begin returns before its first CAS, cas_calls never increases and this loop yields indefinitely. The test then times out instead of reporting the earlier failure. Wait for either the CAS checkpoint or task completion, with a timeout.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Validate the approval that begin returns.

If replace_scope revokes a tool grant without changing policy_ref, a repeated begin can return the existing Approved row at Line 490 before this check runs. consume_inner then denies that row because the grant no longer holds. Validate the returned row’s live authority on both the existing-row and newly published paths. Checking only the automatic value calculated for the new attempt does not cover an older row.

Preserve the scope if retirement is cancelled.

If the caller drops retire_scope while release_scope(...).await is pending, the removed entry never reaches the reinstatement branch. A later retirement returns Denied, so the subject cannot be released through a retry. Make the remove-and-release transition cancellation-safe, or retain a retryable retirement state until release completes.

P2 Badge Revalidate persisted automatic winners on every begin

When a grant or automatic posture is replaced while persist awaits, the approved row has already been stored before this check rejects the racing call. A subsequent identical begin finds that row in existing_begin and returns early at lines 486–490 without calling automatic_stands, so an idempotent audit backend can still return the revoked row as Approved rather than creating a pending human request. Revalidate existing automatic rows against the live scope as well, or retire/replace the stale durable row before returning the race error. This contradicts the documented behavior that automatic approvals are revalidated before publication and that replacement revokes unsupported approvals.

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The diff makes three behavioural changes. Two are in engine.rs: `reinstate` restores a scope when a retirement's release fails, and `automatic_stands` rechecks that a scope's automatic authority is still the live entry both before and after the publication await. The third is the failed-release retry contract documented in MODULE.md. The engine_scopes_tests.rs diff is the only test file touched, and it does cover the failed-release retry (register conflict while owned, then a successful retry) and the revoke-while-published race. Before I settle the verdict I need to see the full context of the test that exercises the failed-release path — in particular whether the retirement that fails release is itself asserted, and whether the retired-then-reinstated subject keeps its denied-until-retried property — plus the engine's `register_scope`/`retire_scope`/`entry` bodies so I can confirm `reinstate` cannot clobber a concurrently inserted entry, and whether `automatic_stands` on the pre-await path can now run twice for a non-automatic row without harm. I will request those reads now and return the final verdict on the next turn. Proven issues so far: none; possible ones depend on the bodies of `register_scope`, `entry`, and the retirement test above line 316 that the diff only shows in part.

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: I need to check the surrounding engine code: whether `reinstate` can clobber a scope registered concurrently between removal and reinstatement, whether `automatic_stands` covers the reuse path, and what the ports' `release_scope` failure semantics are, since the retire loop now writes back after dropping the write lock. Also the test's `replace_scope` on a scope mid-publication needs the actual lock behaviour confirmed before I judge the new denial path. Requesting lookups first; findings empty for now, verdict provisional on those results. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `dbdb6cf7817a`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
