Summary

chottu-core's first run against grpcs://cache.tinyhumans.ai from GitHub-hosted runners pushed at ~1 MiB/s, ~3 writes/s. The box measured 1 MiB/s inbound with an idle disk, and the save steps ran for 15+ minutes. push made one ByteStream Write at a time and then one UpdateActionResult at a time, so each call waited out the full runner-to-Finland round trip. Hits paid the same way: a remote fetch read the signature, then each object, then the record, all one after another.

  • push: up to 32 uploads and at most 32 MiB of blobs in flight over the one HTTP/2 connection (a larger blob goes alone), then up to 32 entry updates. Every action's update still lands before any pre-key's, so readers never find a pre-key whose action is missing.
  • fetch_action: after the signature checks out, the missing objects and the record are read together. An untrusted entry still fetches nothing.
  • input sets (pre-key): the signature and record are read together; the record is used only after verification.
  • Deadlines: a transfer that shares the link now gets time for the whole in-flight budget (allowance(digest, shared); +8 s at the 4 MiB/s floor), so concurrency can't make large blobs time out.
  • push was over clippy's line limit, so its network phase moved into send. The bounded runner is in_flight (count + byte budget, oldest first).

futures-util (FuturesUnordered, with alloc) is already in the tree through tonic/hyper, so it adds no build time.

Public API / behavior changes

None to the API. Remote calls now overlap, and the ordering guarantees are unchanged.

Validation

  • New tests, written first and failing on the old code:
    • push_overlaps_its_calls_over_a_slow_link: 50 ms per call; the peak in-flight Write and UpdateActionResult are both > 1.
    • a_fetch_reads_an_actions_objects_together: peak in-flight Read > 1.
    • a_signed_pre_key_reads_its_signature_and_record_together: peak Read == 2.
    • in_flight_* (4 tests): call limit, byte budget, an oversized job running alone, stopping at the first error; a_blob_over_the_budget_still_goes_up_alone; a_transfer_sharing_the_link_gets_time_for_everything_in_flight.
    • every_action_goes_up_before_any_pre_key: an ordering guard; it passes before and after.
  • The fake server now records per-method in-flight peaks and the order of updates.
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings, cargo build --all-targets --all-features, cargo test --all-features (exit 0), cargo doc with -D warnings: all clean.
  • tinymold-remote coverage: remote/mod.rs 96.7%, client/mod.rs 98.4%, fake/mod.rs 98.3%; all files ≥ 91%.
  • The tinymold-remote suite now runs in 1.3 s, down from 11 s.

No bench/bench.py numbers: the bench measures local compiles, not WAN round trips. The real-world before/after will be chottu-core's CI save-step times.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Remote pushes can upload multiple blobs and update multiple action records concurrently, reducing wait times while preserving update order.
    • Remote lookups can read entry data and related objects concurrently, and retrieve pre-key records alongside signature checks.
    • Concurrent operations are limited to batches of up to 32, and existing verification and timeout behavior is preserved.

The fake remote now records how many calls of each method are being
answered at once, the peak concurrency reached, and the key hash of every
UpdateActionResult in arrival order. The request handling was split into a
separate answer function so the in-flight counter can be decremented once
the response is produced.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Unwrapped the redundant nested blocks in the fake service's answer
function and reformatted the method extraction chain, with no change in
behaviour. Also record the update key hash when storing an action result
so the fake tracks updates alongside actions.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds a helper that seeds a local store with many actions and pre-keys, plus
tests asserting that uploads and action-result updates overlap over a slow
link and that every action is pushed before any pre-key, since readers
discover actions through pre-keys.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The local test fixture now inserts an empty blob and references it as the
stdout and stderr digest in each generated action entry, so the entries
match the format the remote expects.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
`remote push` now keeps up to 32 blob uploads and entry updates in flight
at once instead of issuing them one at a time, so a push to a distant
cache no longer leaves the link idle between round trips. Entries are
still sent only after every blob they name has landed, and actions are
still sent before pre-key records.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The explicit drop of the uploads guard was unnecessary since it goes out of scope at the end of the block anyway, so it has been removed to keep the upload ordering logic easier to follow.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test asserting that fetching an action reads its objects in
parallel rather than one at a time, using a delayed server to observe
overlapping reads.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Output objects and the action record are now read in flight together
instead of one round trip at a time, bounded by the existing in-flight
limit. This cuts the latency of a cache hit on actions with many outputs.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Replaced the futures_util::join! macro with future::join and an explicit await when combining the object fetch and record read, importing future from futures_util to match.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test asserting that reading a signed pre-key fetches its signature and
record together, verifying the peak in-flight read count reaches two.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The prekey record and its signature verification are now issued together so the read overlaps the verification instead of waiting for it to finish. The record is still only used once the signature checks out, so behaviour is unchanged apart from the saved round trip.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The remote spec now records that reads fetch up to 32 objects and records
per round trip, and that pushes keep up to 32 uploads and entry updates in
flight. Both were added because a runner far from its cache was paying a
round trip per object, which capped chottu-core's first push on
GitHub-hosted runners at about 1 MiB/s.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Moves the body of the push upload routine into a dedicated send method so
the caller can decide how to treat a partial push. Behaviour is
unchanged: the same blobs, actions, and pre-keys go up, and the same
transient failure is reported.

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: Provisional: need to check `try_join`'s drop behavior for the unawaited read future, whether `Error` implements `PartialEq` for the test's `matches!` pattern, `Error`'s `From` conversions used in `in_flight`'s `Ok::<_, Error>`/`upload?`, and `retrying`'s closure borrow under `FnMut` for clippy `warnings` — the concurrency runner itself looks bounded and the description matches the diff, but `future::try_join` cancelling `self.client.read(&digest)` on verification failure may or may not leak in-flight reads per the client's deadline handling, and I want the `Error` enum's trait set before deciding if the new tests compile at all under `Eq`-based match arms, which would settle whether the PR body's claim of clean clippy/test runs is consistent with the code shown or whether the diff would not build, since a change the diff shows will not compile is reportable regardless of what the author says they ran. I also want to confirm `Client::within`'s behavior with an unbounded `Write` stream under a shortened deadline — whether the deadline applies to the whole call or per-chunk, since `write_sharing` builds the full chunk `Vec` before the call and `within` wraps the future — and whether `update_action_result`'s `retrying` closure over `key.clone()` under `FnMut` compiles with `self` captured — the last of these settles whether `in_flight`'s signature works with the closures as written or whether `start` needs a boxed future, which the diff implies it does not, so `retrying`'s Fut must be `Send`/`'static`-free enough to push into `FuturesUnordered`, and `read_sharing`'s `(name, bytes)` return tuple must satisfy the same bounds. Checking `Error`'s `PartialEq` implementation and `remote/mod.rs`'s existing `Error` variant set settles the `assert!(matches!(result, Err(Error::Timeout("Write"))))` line; if `PartialEq` is missing, the tests would not compile, which the PR body claims they did, so I should treat the diff as self-consistent unless a lookup contradicts it. Checking `within` and the `Client::read_sharing`/`write_sharing` signature confirms the shared-byte deadline math is actually applied per call rather than per stream chunk — the PR's central deadline claim hinges on that — and `Error`'s `From<io::Error>`/`From<Status>` conversions settle whether `in_flight`'s `Ok::<_, Error>(Some((digest, data.len(), result)))` compiles given `store.read(object)?` and `blobs.get(&digest)` return different error types; if `store.read` returns a `cas::Error` needing a `From` impl into the remote `Error`, the missing conversion would be a compile break the PR body claims did not happen, which I must verify before ruling. Four lookups: the `Error` enum (PartialEq, From impls, variant set), `within`'s signature and deadline mechanics, `retrying`'s signature and `Fut` bounds, and `naming::prekey_key`'s return type to confirm the test's `key.hash` field access. If all four check out, findings will be empty and the summary becomes a clean verdict; if any fails, findings will name the line and the compile or behavior break it causes. The PR body's description otherwise matches the diff: the concurrency structure, the byte budget, the ordering guard, and the deadline change are all present and the tests named in the body all exist in the diff, so the only unresolved question is whether the code compiles and runs as claimed, which the lookups settle.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b6a61

Remote push and fetch can fail for large blobs on slow links. Account for shared bandwidth in transfer deadlines before merging, unless this regression is explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b6a61

The existing integrity checks and publication ordering largely remain intact. However, action fetches now retain all downloaded objects in memory, and rejected pre-key entries can trigger record downloads before verification finishes. These changes increase availability risk for builds using a shared or compromised cache.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Action fetches now collect every downloaded object into a Vec before inserting any object. Memory therefore grows with the entire missing object set, not merely the 32 active reads. A cache writer or compromised server can preserve an existing signed action record while supplying additional output metadata; that metadata was already outside signature coverage, but aggregate retention now makes it a stronger memory-exhaustion path. Per-blob hashing and the 4 GiB limit do not impose an aggregate byte budget, and allocation failure can defeat the intended error-to-miss containment.
  • Low · security · observed: Pre-key verification and record retrieval now use join, which waits for both results. Even an immediately rejected unsigned entry starts a record read and delays rejection until that read completes or times out. The remote-controlled declared size permits up to 4 GiB and the configured timeout plus 1024 seconds. This weakens the previous verification-before-record-read barrier, although it does not permit unverified record use or introduce the pre-existing oversized-signature-read exposure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The resource-exhaustion paths affect reader processes and build environments consuming attacker-influenced cache entries. They require control over returned ActionCache metadata; full-byte amplification additionally requires suitable readable CAS content or server control. A modified action can reuse an existing valid record signature. Actual cross-project or cross-tenant reach depends on cache permissions and namespace sharing, which were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Remote output metadata determines the missing-object read set. Keeping a valid signed record while adding output entries can cause all successfully downloaded bytes to accumulate before object-name validation and insertion begin. The previous implementation processed and released objects individually, so this PR increases memory exposure without requiring a forged record signature.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Signatures bind entry kind, cache key, and record hash and size, not the output_files list. This is a pre-existing trust boundary, not a newly introduced signature bypass. Content verification remains effective for integrity, but it does not authorize or bound the aggregate resources spent fetching remote-listed objects.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Publication remains phased rather than transactional. Partial uploads or valid CAS objects may survive failure, as before. Cancellation and retries do not add a new cleanup owner, but server completion after client timeout remains unverified. The important introduced containment gap is retained download memory, which is not converted reliably into the documented recoverable cache miss.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve overlap while processing and releasing each completed object promptly, with an aggregate in-flight byte budget. Keep pre-key record retrieval behind verification, or explicitly bound speculative retrieval and cancel it immediately on verification failure.
