Summary

OAuthFlow::require_public_endpoints refused internal authorization, registration and token endpoints. It did not check the server URL itself, which begin and detect probe from the host first. A host that lets users name a server could therefore be aimed at an internal service, such as the metadata address, through the probe's request.

Under the guard, begin and detect now check the server URL (https, every resolved address public) before probing it, and pin the probe client to the checked addresses.

The guard is also exported as registry::guard_public_endpoint, so a host dialing the server itself afterwards (McpHttpClient::builder(..).pinned_public_endpoint(..)) can run the same check and pin the same way.

Related issue

None.

API or behavior changes

  • Behavior: a flow built with require_public_endpoints() now refuses a non-https or internal server URL in begin and detect, with MalformedResponse ("MCP endpoint refused: …") or EndpointResolution. Flows without the guard are unchanged.
  • New public item: registry::guard_public_endpoint (and registry::oauth::guard_public_endpoint), which is the existing guard_endpoint.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: ok
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: ok
  • cargo build --all-targets --all-features: ok
  • cargo test --all-features: all pass
  • RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo doc --no-deps --all-features: ok

Tests

  • a_guarded_flow_refuses_an_internal_server_url_before_probing_it: begin and detect against a loopback server URL are refused as an MCP endpoint, and nothing is registered.
  • the_public_endpoint_guard_is_usable_by_a_host: plain http and the metadata address are refused, and a public literal address is returned for pinning.

Documentation

Rustdoc on require_public_endpoints and detect.

Checklist

  • The change is focused on one logical change
  • No new #[allow(...)], #[ignore], or relaxed lints
  • No secrets, tokens, or .env contents in the diff or the description

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • OAuth detection and setup now reject MCP server URLs that use plain HTTP or resolve to internal addresses when public-endpoint mode is enabled.
    • Authorization, registration, and token endpoints continue to be checked for unsafe destinations.
  • New Features
    • The public-endpoint validation guard is now available through the library’s public interface.

Introduce an endpoint guard that validates OAuth endpoints before the
registry uses them, and wire it into the OAuth flow so that requests to
untrusted or malformed endpoints are rejected early.

Add tests showing that a guarded flow rejects a loopback server url before
probing it, and that the public endpoint guard is usable by a host. The

Test assessment: No supported feature-to-test mapping was available; this does not mean tests are absent or passed.

Features

  • Added — Server URL guarded under require_public_endpoints: OAuthFlow::begin and detect now screen the server's own URL like the endpoints the server advertises, refusing internal or non-https server addresses before the probe request is made, so a user-supplied server address does not reach an internal service. (crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/flow.rs#impl OAuthFlow {)
  • Added — Public guard_public_endpoint export: The endpoint guard is re-exported as guard_public_endpoint from the oauth module and the crate root, giving hosts a supported surface to check a URL before use; the diff also wires it through crates/tinymcp/src/registry/mod.rs. (crates/tinymcp/src/lib.rs#pub use error::{Error, Result};, crates/tinymcp/src/registry/mod.rs#pub use config_doc::{AppliedServer, ConfigApplyReport};, crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/mod.rs#pub(crate) mod tokens;)
  • Internal refactor — Shared probe_client helper: begin and detect previously built the McpHttpClient inline with timeout and proxy settings; that construction is now centralised in probe_client, which additionally pins the guarded public addresses when public_endpoints_only is set. (crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/flow.rs#impl OAuthFlow {)
  • Modified — guard_endpoint visibility widened: crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/endpoint_guard.rs changes guard_endpoint from pub(crate) to pub so the wrapper module and crate root can re-export it, without changing its refusal semantics or error types. (crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/endpoint_guard.rs#use crate::error::{Error, Result};)

Tests

No supported feature-to-test mapping was produced. Test execution is not inferred.

Findings

  • Lane summary: The change makes `guard_endpoint` public (re-exported as `guard_public_endpoint`) and reuses it to screen the server's own URL in `probe_client` under `require_public_endpoints`, with tests covering the new guard path, the per-endpoint refusals by name, the public-address pass, and the crate-root re-export. The behaviour change is pinned by tests that would fail if it regressed: `a_guarded_flow_refuses_an_internal_server_url_before_probing_it` asserts the loopback server URL is refused by both `begin` and `detect` with no registration performed, and `the_public_endpoint_guard_resolves_at_the_crate_root` exercises the new public surface through the non-test build. One input path — the pinned client conflicting with a configured proxy — remains uncovered, which is a coverage gap rather than a demonstrated misbehaviour. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `eaba68861b63`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

📝 Walkthrough

The endpoint guard is now publicly re-exported. In public-endpoint mode, OAuth detect and begin check the MCP server URL and pin the probe client to the checked addresses. Tests cover URL rejection, public endpoint acceptance, and the crate-root API.

Changes: OAuth endpoint guard

Layer / File(s) Summary

Guard OAuth server URL probes
crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/flow.rs, crates/tinymcp/src/registry/oauth/mod_host_store_tests.rs
detect and begin use a shared probe-client helper. In public-endpoint mode, the helper checks the MCP server URL and pins the client to the checked addresses. Tests check rejection of internal URLs and acceptance of public endpoint cases.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 473e4

Guarded OAuth flows now refuse internal or non-HTTPS server URLs, and flows without the guard are unchanged. No merge-blocking risk remains; a small documentation clarification is suggested.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 473e4

The change closes an internal-network request path without an identified security regression. Protection remains opt-in, and later host-managed connections still need validation and address pinning.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Where a host permits untrusted parties to configure server URLs, the relevant authority is the host process's network reachability, including internal services and metadata endpoints. This PR reduces that exposure for guarded OAuth probes; it does not automatically constrain subsequent connections created separately by the host.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The guard requires HTTPS, rejects empty or failed DNS results, and refuses the endpoint if any resolved address matches its blocked-address policy. The pinned builder validates address ports and literal-IP identity, rejects configured proxies, disables redirects, and uses approved addresses while retaining the URL hostname.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new preflight runs before registration and pending-state insertion, so refusal or interruption during that preflight creates no new authorization state. Existing completion removes pending state under a mutex before exchanging the code, rechecks the token destination in guarded mode, and persists only after a successful token response. These later state transitions are unchanged by this PR.

The module-ci / supply-chain failure is not from this change: it fails on main too (run 38598670406). The cause is the rustls advisories RUSTSEC-2026-0346 and RUSTSEC-2026-0347 in the lockfile. Every other check is green.

Re-export the public endpoint guard so callers can validate URLs without
reaching into the registry module, and cover it with a reexport test. The
guarded flow test now checks each advertised endpoint individually, since an
internal server URL is refused before probing.

Clarify that callers must pin validated addresses.
