Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328 (phase 5, sandbox).

Adds ScriptSpawner / SpawnSpec / SpawnOutput to caps::host::script. The runner stages the script and hands one spec to the installed spawner, so a host can run every code/shell script through its jail (install_script_spawner). require_script_spawner(true) fails closed when none is installed. Default DirectSpawner preserves existing behaviour.

Tests: tests/script_spawner_e2e.rs (own binary, process-global seam); existing caps::host tests pass; clippy 1.98 clean for the touched files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Hosts can route scripts through a custom execution environment, such as a jail.
    • Hosts can require a custom script runner; script runs fail with an error if none is installed.
    • By default, scripts continue to run directly, inheriting the parent process’s environment and privileges.

Add a host capability that runs scripts, with a runner and spawner
backing it. This lets flows execute host-side scripts as a step.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The in-crate spawner tests were deleted along with their module
declaration, since the coverage is now provided by the new end-to-end
test file.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The process-global spawner tests serialised themselves with a std Mutex, whose guard is not held across await points in a way that suits async tests. Switching to a tokio Mutex with const_new lets the guard be acquired with await, keeping the cases serialised without blocking the runtime.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds a changelog entry for the host-caps script spawner seam, noting that
`caps::host::script` now routes `code`/`shell` scripts through a
`ScriptSpawner`, with `install_script_spawner` for host jailing and
`require_script_spawner(true)` for fail-closed runs. The default
`DirectSpawner` preserves the previous unjailed behaviour.

📝 Walkthrough

Script execution now goes through a host-configurable ScriptSpawner. DirectSpawner preserves direct process execution when no spawner is installed and enforcement is disabled. Hosts can require a spawner. Windows shell requests are rejected before spawning.

Changes: Script Spawning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Spawner contract, direct implementation, and configuration
crates/tinyflows/src/caps/host/script/spawner.rs
Adds launch and output types, the ScriptSpawner contract, DirectSpawner, and process-wide configuration to install, clear, or require a spawner.
Script runner integration and public API
crates/tinyflows/src/caps/host/script/runner.rs, crates/tinyflows/src/caps/host/script.rs, crates/tinyflows/src/caps/host/mod.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The runner submits launch specifications to the selected spawner and uses its exit code. The host modules re-export the spawner API, and the documentation describes the seam and default behavior.
Spawner integration tests
crates/tinyflows/tests/script_spawner_e2e.rs
Tests verify the launch specification received by an installed spawner, required-spawner failure, and direct shell execution when enforcement is disabled.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4e5ff

Script execution now goes through a configurable spawner, and the default behavior is preserved. The only open item is a test-hygiene improvement that makes failures easier to diagnose. It does not block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4e5ff

The inspected execution paths preserve existing caller checks and historical direct execution behavior. Isolation depends on the host installing a suitable spawner and enabling fail-closed mode before accepting scripts. Deployment initialization and custom-spawner cleanup behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Spawner selection affects all requests using this shared runner in the process, rather than one workflow or tenant. A provider receives workflow-derived execution inputs and serialized data. In direct mode, potential exposure includes resources and credentials accessible to the host child process; deployed tenant, service, and data-store boundaries are not established by this change.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced control-bypass path was established in the inspected callers. Workflow inputs reach launch specifications, not the host configuration functions, and required-without-provider selection refuses execution. Direct execution in optional mode is unchanged exposure, not a newly introduced sandbox escape.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The shell caller retains closed shell-interpreter selection and resolves script paths and working directories through ScriptPolicy before calling the shared runner. These upstream controls bound requested paths; they do not contain script behavior. Actual containment is delegated to the trusted provider.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The integration tests serialize process-global changes and exercise installed-provider routing, required-without-provider refusal, and optional direct fallback. The custom provider records specifications and returns synthetic output, so these tests do not demonstrate jail isolation, cancellation cleanup, or concurrent policy-transition guarantees.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For hosts requiring isolation, install the provider and enable required mode before accepting workflow execution. Treat reconfiguration as a drain-and-replace operation, or define an explicit policy-generation mechanism if live revocation is needed.
  • proposed — Document and validate provider obligations for cancellation, process-tree cleanup, timeout enforcement, environment filtering, and filesystem exposure, including existing-file scripts outside staging. These are integration safeguards, not verified defects in a supplied jail implementation.

Restore the global spawner state when a test panics.

clear_script_spawner() and require_script_spawner(false) run only after run_script returns. In the first test, if run_script(...).await.expect("runs") panics, clear_script_spawner() does not run. Recording then stays installed for the next test in this binary. The tokio::sync::Mutex guard is not poisoned when a test panics, so the next test still runs. That test then fails for an unrelated reason, which hides the original failure. Restore the state with a drop guard.

let _reset = Reset;

P1 Badge Rename this Rust test with the _tests.rs suffix

This new Rust test is named script_spawner_e2e.rs, but repository guidance requires Rust test filenames to end in _tests.rs; rename the file so the added test complies with the repository's required test organization.

P2 Badge Preserve non-UTF-8 paths passed to the spawner

When ScriptSource::File points to a valid Unix path containing non-UTF-8 bytes, to_string_lossy() substitutes replacement characters before either a custom spawner or DirectSpawner sees it, turning a script that the previous .arg(&script) implementation could execute into a nonexistent path. Carry argument paths as OsString or PathBuf and only render them lossily for diagnostics.
