Summary

  • Carry forward the live Chromium egress cases for permitted cross-origin subresources, worker requests, redirect hops, WebSockets, and exact host-authorized socket dialing.
  • Add a controlled module-level DNS rebinding case. It verifies that once the host resolver changes the authorized address, neither the rebound destination nor the old socket receives the next request.
  • Merge current main and preserve the upstream module test layout and exact-socket coverage.

Verification

  • TINYCOMPUTER_LIVE_BROWSER_TESTS=1 bash scripts/ci-cancel-aware.sh cargo test --manifest-path vendor/tinycomputer/Cargo.toml -p tinycomputer-browser --features agent-browser live_chromium_ -- --nocapture — 8 passed locally on Linux with Chromium.
  • TINYCOMPUTER_LIVE_BROWSER_EGRESS_TESTS=1 bash scripts/ci-cancel-aware.sh cargo test --manifest-path vendor/tinycomputer/Cargo.toml -p tinycomputer --lib --features static-link tinybus_module::browser_egress_live_tests -- --nocapture — 6 passed locally through the loaded module.
  • cargo clippy --locked --manifest-path vendor/tinycomputer/Cargo.toml -p tinycomputer --lib --features static-link --tests -- -D warnings — passed.
  • cargo fmt --manifest-path vendor/tinycomputer/Cargo.toml --all -- --check and git diff --check — passed.
  • Hosted feature-tests CI runs scripts/test-features.sh, including both live browser suites, on Ubuntu, macOS, and Windows.
    Closes Browser transport policy contract for resolved-address SSRF and rebinding protection #111

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded live browser coverage for permitted cross-origin resources, denied worker requests, and DNS rebinding to private destinations.
    • Added checks that denied destinations do not receive connections, including when a hostname’s resolution changes between navigations.
    • Updated stale-authorization coverage and included live browser tests in the feature test run.
    • Added coverage using distinct listener ports to verify that access decisions apply to the requested address.

Diagnostics and supporting details

Full summary

Pull request purpose (title): test(browser-egress): cover controlled DNS rebinding. Carries forward the live Chromium egress cases for permitted cross-origin subresources, worker requests, redirect hops, WebSockets, and exact host-authorized socket dialing, and adds a controlled module-level DNS rebinding case verifying that once the host resolver changes the authorized address, neither the rebound destination nor the old socket receives the next request. The whole-pull-request change touches nine files (745 additions, 224 deletions), all test code plus the feature-test script. The latest-push-delta comparison is unavailable, so no push-delta-specific claims are made.

What changed

The whole-pull-request diff reorganizes the browser crate's live Chromium egress tests into a live_tests/ module tree (mod.rs, navigation_tests.rs, denied_requests_tests.rs, dns_rebinding_tests.rs), moving fixtures (RejectAllButFixture, AuthorizeExactSocket, wait_for_denied_target, AllowFixtureHosts, RebindingAuthorizer) into mod.rs. It replaces 127.0.0.2 binds with ephemeral 127.0.0.1 binds and assert_ne! port checks in the browser and module suites, and the module denial test now navigates to a separately bound denied port. It adds a browser-crate DNS rebinding test and a module-level DNS rebinding test for the tinybus module, backed by an optional resolved_address on the fixture EgressHost, a resolve observation, and a start_browser_with_fixture_hosts_and_resolution helper, and it adds two gated live-suite invocations to scripts/test-features.sh. The latest-push-delta comparison is unavailable; the above describes the whole-pull-request change, not a push delta.

Features

  • Internal refactor — Browser live egress tests reorganized into live_tests/ module tree: Splits the browser crate's live Chromium egress tests into a live_tests/ module tree, relocating the shared fixtures (RejectAllButFixture, AuthorizeExactSocket, wait_for_denied_target, AllowFixtureHosts, and the new RebindingAuthorizer) into mod.rs; the tests lane (answered) reports the relocated assertions remain non-vacuous. (crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/mod.rs, crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/navigation_tests.rs, crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/denied_requests_tests.rs, crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/dns_rebinding_tests.rs)
  • Modified — Loopback denial fixtures no longer depend on 127.0.0.2: Denied listeners bind ephemeral 127.0.0.1 addresses with assert_ne! port checks instead of 127.0.0.2 binds, and the denial test now navigates to the separately bound denied port; the tests lane (answered) reports no regression from this refactor. (crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/mod.rs, crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/navigation_tests.rs)
  • Added — Browser-crate DNS rebinding live test: Binds an allowed IPv4 listener and a rebound IPv6 listener on the same port, flips the controlled resolver to the rebound address, and asserts the navigation still succeeds, the resolver's first observation is the allowed address and later observations are the private rebound address, the previously allowed socket sees no extra connection within 500ms, and the rebound private listener never accepts; the critique and security lanes (answered) report the assertions line up with the fixture host's behavior. (crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/dns_rebinding_tests.rs)
  • Added — Module-level DNS rebinding live test: Asserts navigation to the rebound address is rejected, the rebound listener does not accept within the window, the prior allowed socket gains no new connection, host authorization is re-requested, a resolve observation reports the rebound address, the rebound socket is never consumed, and the session closes cleanly; the tests lane (answered) reports no defect. (crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/browser_egress_live_tests/authority_denial_tests.rs async fn live_chromium_denies_stale_egress_generation_before_dialing() -> tinybu)
  • Modified — Fixture EgressHost gains controlled resolution hook: Adds an optional resolved_address to the fixture host, filters allowed addresses by the resolved value, records a resolve observation when set, and factors a start_browser_with_fixture_hosts_and_resolution helper that preserves existing entry points via a None default. (crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/browser_egress_live_tests/mod.rs struct EgressHost {, crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/browser_egress_live_tests/mod.rs impl EgressHost {, crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/browser_egress_live_tests/mod.rs async fn start_browser_with_fixture_hosts()

Tests

  • live integration test — Asserts the permitted fixture page receives Chromium's navigation and returns a body referencing a denied 127.0.0.1 address, waits for the denied target to be recorded, then asserts the denied listener's accept returns WouldBlock.: Behavioral negative assertion on subresource egress; the tests lane is answered with no defect and notes the relocated assertions remain non-vacuous. (crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/denied_requests_tests.rs async fn live_chromium_subresource_never_reaches_a_denied_destination() {)
  • live integration test — Asserts a WebSocket attempt to a denied destination leaves the denied listener with no accepted connection.: Behavioral negative assertion on WebSocket egress; the tests lane is answered with no defect. (crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/denied_requests_tests.rs async fn live_chromium_websocket_never_reaches_a_denied_destination() {)
  • live integration test — Asserts loopback navigation through the authenticated session proxy succeeds and reports the proxy authorization count.: Behavioral navigation assertion; the tests lane is answered with no defect. (crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/denied_requests_tests.rs async fn live_chromium_loopback_navigation_uses_the_authenticated_session_proxy()
  • live integration test — Asserts the controlled resolver's first observation is the allowed address, later observations are the private rebound address, the previously allowed socket sees no extra connection within 500ms, and the rebound private listener never accepts.: Behavioral rebinding assertion that fails on regression to dialing rebound destinations; the tests lane is answered with no defect. (crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests/dns_rebinding_tests.rs)
  • live module integration test — Asserts navigation to the rebound address is rejected, the rebound listener does not accept within the window, the prior allowed socket gains no new connection, host authorization is re-requested, a resolve observation reports the rebound address, the rebound socket is never consumed, and the session closes cleanly.: Module-level rebinding assertion through the loaded tinybus module; the tests lane is answered with no defect. (crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/browser_egress_live_tests/authority_denial_tests.rs async fn live_chromium_denies_stale_egress_generation_before_dialing() -> tinybu)
  • live module integration test — Asserts the tinybus module routes worker egress through host authorization and that the denied address receives no accept.: Behavioral worker-egress assertion relocated/kept under the new module layout; the tests lane is answered with no defect. (crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/browser_egress_live_tests/worker.rs async fn live_chromium_module_routes_worker_egress_through_host_authorization())
  • live module integration test — Asserts the module dials only the host-returned socket and rejects the non-matching one.: Behavioral exact-socket dialing assertion relocated under the new module layout; the tests lane is answered with no defect. (crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/browser_egress_live_tests/mod.rs async fn live_chromium_module_dials_only_the_host_returned_socket_and_rejects_ch)

critique

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Positive: The critique lane is answered with 9 of 9 files reviewed and no findings, reporting that the new rebinding test's assertions line up with how EgressHost::authorize builds the grant and with what the fixture records, and that the extra-connections check is a sound no-change assertion.
  • Lane summary: The new live Chromium test binds the allowed IPv4 socket and the rebound IPv6 socket on the same port, flips the host's controlled resolver to the rebound address, and then checks the navigate is denied with no dial to the rebound socket and a fresh authorization observation including the rebound resolution. The assertions line up with how `EgressHost::authorize` builds `allow` and with what the fixture records, and the extra-connections check is a sound no-change assertion, so I found no defect in this file. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `9e0d7fbe7da4`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

security

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Positive: The security lane is answered with 9 of 9 files reviewed and no findings, reporting that after the controlled resolver is repointed the host returns no addresses, so the module denies the navigation and neither socket is consumed or connected to; the only unverified item is live runtime behavior with an installed Chromium.
  • Lane summary: The new live test follows the existing fixture pattern (start_browser_with_fixture_hosts_and_resolution, serve_fixture, LiveBrowser) and its assertions line up with the fixture host's behavior: after the controlled resolver is repointed, authorize returns no addresses, so the module denies the navigation and neither socket is consumed or connected to. No reportable defect found in this file; the only thing I could not verify is the live test's runtime behaviour with an installed Chromium. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `9e0d7fbe7da4`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: This revision only adds live, opt-in Chromium test coverage (a new DNS-rebinding live test and its `resolved_address` fixture plumbing), consolidates the shared live-test helpers into `live_tests/mod.rs`, and adds a link against `rebound_listener` so the rebinding fixture stays open. The new assertions are behavioural: the test fails if the rebound private socket is dialed or consumed, and the fixture changes cannot regress silently because they only exist to feed these assertions. I found no defect that would misbehave for a reachable input, regress existing behaviour, or violate a rule from the repository's instruction files. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `9e0d7fbe7da4`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Positive: The description lane is answered and reports that the new module-level DNS rebinding test mirrors the existing live egress cases, flips the controlled resolver between authorizations, and asserts the denied navigation fails without reaching either the rebound or the previously allowed socket.
  • Lane summary: The new `dns_rebinding_tests.rs` module-level test mirrors the existing live egress cases: it binds an IPv6 loopback listener on the same port as the allowed IPv4 fixture, flips the controlled resolver to the rebound address between authorizations, and asserts the denied navigation fails without reaching either the rebound socket or the previously allowed one. I found no defect that makes the test fail or misbehave for a reachable input; the one thing I could not verify is the underlying rebinding behaviour itself, which lives in the `vendor/tinybus` submodule that is not checked out here. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `9e0d7fbe7da4`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds live Chromium tests for permitted cross-origin resources, denied worker requests, exact-socket denial, and DNS rebinding. It adds resolution-aware egress test fixtures and commands to run both browser live-test suites.

Changes: Browser egress tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Linked Chromium egress scenarios
crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/linked/linked_tests/live_tests.rs
Live tests cover permitted cross-origin subresources, denied worker fetches, exact-socket denial, and DNS rebinding. The rebinding authorizer grants the initial allowed address and denies later resolutions to a private address.

EgressHost can optionally match configured addresses to resolved addresses and record resolution observations. Live tests check rebound-address denial and use distinct allowed and denied socket ports. The stale-generation fixture sets resolved_address to None.
Live test execution
scripts/test-features.sh
The script runs the browser crate’s agent-browser live tests and the browser-egress static-link live tests with one test thread.

Explanation

The changes add or adjust browser-egress live fixtures and add their commands to scripts/test-features.sh. The changes support issue #111 coverage for transport admission and DNS rebinding. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #111 is an active direct link. The new live module test changes the controlled resolver, requires re-authorization, denies the rebound navigation, and checks that neither the rebound socket nor the old socket receives a connection. The reported suite also covers redirects, subresources, workers, WebSockets, and exact-socket dialing. The evidence reports local Linux results only. The issue requires real-browser/module evidence on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The description states that hosted CI runs the suites but provides no hosted results, so cross-platform compliance is not established.

Resolution

Provide reviewable hosted results for both live suites on Linux, macOS, and Windows, including the required controlled private-destination, rebinding, redirect, subresource, and WebSocket cases.

Clone the locked address list before the assertion so the mutex guard is
released prior to the comparison, avoiding a held lock across the assert.

Replace the unnecessary format! call with a to_string conversion on the
static HTML string in the live worker fetch test, since the literal
contains no interpolation.

The live egress tests previously bound the denied listener to a second
loopback address on the same port as the allowed listener, which is not
portable across environments. Each denied listener now binds to its own
ephemeral port and the tests assert the ports differ, so the fixtures
exercise host-based denial rather than address-based separation.

The live egress tests now pass the denied listener's full socket address
to the browser fixture host instead of only its port, so the denied host
is explicitly authorized and the tests exercise the intended rejection
path.

The DNS rebinding test now clones the observation list instead of holding the
mutex guard across the assertions, so the lock is released before the proxy
call that follows.

The monolithic live_tests.rs file was replaced by a live_tests directory
containing separate modules for navigation, denied requests, and DNS
rebinding scenarios. This keeps each live Chromium egress test group
readable and makes it easier to extend coverage without growing a single
oversized file.

9-12: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Use a distinct IP address on the original port.

The controlled resolver records the rebound address, but EgressHost::authorize rejects it because both the address and port must match. The request is denied before consume or dialing. The test therefore cannot distinguish a same-port IP rebind from a port mismatch.

The linked browser test uses the same port with different loopback addresses, but it uses a separate authorizer and does not detect this module fixture gap.

Suggested fix
-    let rebound_listener = tokio::net::TcpListener::bind("127.0.0.1:0").await?;
+    let rebound_listener = tokio::net::TcpListener::bind(("127.0.0.2", port)).await?;
     let allowed_address = allowed_listener.local_addr()?.to_string();
     let rebound_address = rebound_listener.local_addr()?.to_string();
-    assert_ne!(port, rebound_listener.local_addr()?.port());
+    assert_eq!(port, rebound_listener.local_addr()?.port());

The DNS rebinding test now binds the rebound listener to the same port as the
allowed listener but on the IPv6 loopback address, so the two sockets share a
port while remaining distinct endpoints. The assertions were updated to check
that the ports match and the addresses differ, which better exercises the
rebinding scenario.

Reformat the rebound listener bind call in the DNS rebinding live test to

senamakel dismissed coderabbitai[bot]’s stale review October 23, 2026 20:30

This review requested cloning observed_addresses before the timeout await. The current 8b5eb8e head snapshots the mutex-protected addresses before awaiting; the same-port rebinding fixture and browser tests pass, all 20 checks are green, and there are no unresolved threads. I re-requested review twice after the fix, but this verdict still refers to the superseded head. Dismissing only the stale verdict; the requested fix remains in the branch.
