fix(module): wait for setup before reporting a module Ready - #110
Conversation
Adds a helper that waits until the module owning a bus name has finished setup, faulted, failed or been closed, or until a deadline passes, then returns its snapshot. Loaded is not the same as serving, so callers that reported a module usable at load time could report one about to lose its name. Lazy modules that have not been asked to initialise are returned at once, and None is returned when no loaded module owns the name. The settle method on ModuleHost was no longer called anywhere, so it has been dropped along with its doc comment. Tests covering the setup race it guarded are added in resolve_tests. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The test that checks a module is not ready until its setup signals ready now uses ensure_loaded_within with a short deadline instead of spawning the load and polling is_finished, so the wait is bounded rather than relying on scheduling. The module is still asserted to be Loading while setup is pending and Ready once the handle signals. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Resolution now waits for a loaded module to finish its setup before treating it as serving, since an eager module's init can return while its server or socket is still starting and may fault afterwards. A cached Ready is re-checked against the host so a module that faulted after being reported ready surfaces its own reason instead of a bare Unavailable. The module resolution docs now explain that a module only counts as serving once its setup has finished, and that a cached Ready is re-checked against the host so later faults surface as failures instead of bare Unavailable. The setup_outcome match arm was also reformatted without changing behaviour. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Return the same lazy-state snapshot you checked
When the first call to a lazy module starts initialization between these two snapshot() calls, the condition observes Resolved but the returned snapshot is Initializing; ladder then treats that immediate result as if the 30-second deadline elapsed and permanently caches the healthy module as Failed. Capture one snapshot and return that same value (and cover this interleaving) so this branch has a consistent lazy-state decision.

Stop at the loaded bus-name match
When a healthy loaded module shares its bus name with a rejected artifact whose eager initialization produced ModuleState::Failed, ModuleHost::list() contains the healthy loaded entry followed by the disabled rejection. This find_map skips the healthy match and later selects the rejection, so the next cached ensure_loaded permanently downgrades the healthy record to Failed; inspect the first bus-name match (loaded entries come first), or require the matching entry to be enabled before marking the slot faulted.

Tiny Sweeper reviewReviewed head: Verdict: Ready for maintainer review · Priority: none Diagnostics and supporting detailsFull summaryPull request purpose (title): fix(module): wait for setup before reporting a module Ready. Purpose: wait for setup before reporting a module Ready. The pull request makes the resolver report a module `Ready` only after its setup has finished, adds a bounded `ModuleHost::settle` wait, splits `Resolver::ladder` into `load_rungs` plus a settle step, and re-checks a cached `Ready` against the host so a module that faults later is reported as failed with its reason rather than a bare `Unavailable`. The latest-push delta is unavailable. Findings: critique (Answered) reports one concrete behavioral gap — `setup_outcome` treats `ModuleState::Disabled` as a failure, so settling a lazy/disabled module can mark resolution terminal where it previously returned `Ok`, contradicting the `settle` doc comment's lazy-return claim, though the exact recovery/reporting consequences are less certain than the state comparison because the full bodies of `settle`/`ladder` could not be fetched. still_servingnow runs on everyensure_loadedcall that hits a cachedReady.ModuleClient::recordand the access trait route calls through this path. Each call runs
runtime.host().list(). That method takes theloadedandrejectedmutexes. It then clones aModuleInfo, including the fullModuleManifest, for every admitted and rejected module. The code discards all of these clones except one. The cost grows with the module count and adds lock contention to the call path.Add a narrow host accessor that inspects one module under the lock. Summary
The resolver now reports a module
Readyonly after its setup has finished. A setup fault becomes a failed load carrying the module's reason. A cachedReadyis re-checked against the host, so a module that faults later is reported as failed instead of answering every call with a bareUnavailable.Root cause
Resolver::ladder(crates/tinybus/src/module/resolve.rs, previously around :673-835) returnedOk(())as soon as a rung loaded the module, andstart_resolution(:625-660) cachedResolution::Ready. Eagerinitreturns before setup (serve/open) completes, and setup signalsreadyorfaultafterwards. If it faulted, the host dropped the module's bus name, but the cachedReadywas served byensure_loaded_inner(:513Claim::Done(Ready)and :544Waited::Ready).ModuleObjectClient::pin_owner(module/client.rs:356-363) then found no owner and returnedModuleCallError::Unavailablewith no reason. Onlyload_file_with_host_callbackswaited for ready.Behaviour change
ModuleHost::settle(new,pub(crate)) waits for ready/fault/failure/close, bounded. A lazy module not yet initialised returns at once.Resolver::laddernow runs every rung (local file, linked, search path, release cache, already-loaded) and then settles, via the newload_rungs. AFaulted/Failed/Stopped/timeout result becomesErr("module '<id>' faulted during setup: <reason>")(marked terminal), and the slot settles asFailed. Setup is bounded at 30 s.ensure_loadedre-checks a cachedReadyagainst the host (still_serving). If the module has since faulted it callsresolution::mark_faulted, reports, and returns the reason.readynow fails after 30 s instead of being reported Ready.state_ofreportsLoadingwhile setup runs.Regression tests (
