Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328. Advances #27 (does not close it; see Remaining).

What this adds

  • NetworkPolicy::Allowlist(EgressAllowlist { hosts, ports }) with validation (non-empty, non-zero ports, no wildcards, cloud metadata endpoints refused) and documented DNS pin handling. NetworkPolicy is no longer Copy. Every backend (passthrough, docker, namespace, microvm) refuses an allowlist it cannot enforce with a typed ConstraintNotEnforced { Network, Unsupported }; none widens it to Egress.
  • SandboxEvent { Started, Denied, LimitHit, Exited } (+ DenialKind, LimitKind, EventSink, CollectingSink) in core, mirrored as wire types in tinybox-bus.
  • tinybox-linux: NamespaceProbe/UsernsStatus report whether bwrap exists and whether unprivileged user namespaces work, naming the Ubuntu 24.04 AppArmor restriction with an actionable message.
  • tinybox-microvm: kvm::probe / KvmStatus distinguish missing /dev/kvm from permission denied.
  • Bus contract 1.19 (vocabulary only, no new member); docs/specs/contract-1-19.md.
  • tinybox_core::shell::{classify, scan, env_guard} deprecated (policy now lives in tinysecurity-policy); removal in the release after 0.1.34. README/AGENTS document the sandbox-only boundary.

Remaining under #27 (not in this PR)

Allowlist enforcement per backend, cgroup/Job Object/setrlimit limit parity and LimitHit emission, seccomp, microvm artifact export, bus members for plan check/event stream, AppContainer (#22), and the cross-OS e2e matrix (#29). Event types are defined but backends do not emit them yet.

Verification

cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings (stable and 1.98), cargo test --workspace.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added network egress allowlist policies, with validation for invalid entries and cloud metadata endpoints. Current sandbox backends reject allowlists they cannot enforce rather than silently weakening restrictions.
    • Added structured sandbox events for startup, denied access, resource-limit hits, and exit status.
    • Added diagnostics for Linux namespace and KVM availability, including guidance when prerequisites are missing or inaccessible.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified sandbox responsibilities and the handling of unsupported or partially enforced constraints.
    • Marked legacy shell command-policy APIs as deprecated.

Add an Allowlist variant to NetworkPolicy that names the hosts and ports a
box may reach, with validation rejecting empty lists, malformed host names
and cloud metadata endpoints. Backends that cannot enforce an allowlist now
refuse such a box at create time rather than silently widening it to full
egress.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Change network_flags to take a reference to NetworkPolicy instead of
taking it by value, and update the call site to pass a borrow. This
avoids an unnecessary copy of the policy when building the docker
argument list.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add an event module with SandboxEvent, EventSink, CollectingSink and the
DenialKind and LimitKind enums, re-exported from the crate root so
backends can report denials and limit hits. Also cover allowlist
validation, policy risk ranking and typed network refusals with tests.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted the allowlist validation assertions to satisfy rustfmt and made the
spec validation test return a Result so it can use the fallible spec helper.
Removed the denied event JSON round-trip test from the event tests.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a test to each sandbox backend asserting that creating a sandbox with an
allowlist network policy fails with ConstraintNotEnforced, since none of the
backends can enforce egress allowlists.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a test asserting that creating a sandbox with an egress allowlist fails
with ConstraintNotEnforced when the backend cannot enforce network policy,
so the unsupported-enforcement path stays covered.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformat the unenforceable network allowlist tests across the sandbox
backends and switch the passthrough test to crate-relative paths for
NetworkPolicy, EgressAllowlist, Constraint, and Enforcement. No test
behaviour changes.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a probe module and re-export NamespaceProbe and UsernsStatus so callers can inspect user namespace availability without reaching into the crate internals.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The executable-bit check used unix-only APIs unconditionally, so the crate
failed to build on non-unix targets. It is now compiled only on unix, with a
plain file check as the fallback elsewhere, and the corresponding test is
gated the same way.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a KVM-based virtualization backend for the microvm crate,
providing the core module and its accompanying tests.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Bump the contract to 1.19 and add a NetworkPolicy::Allowlist variant that
restricts egress to named hosts and ports, with backends that cannot enforce
it refusing the request. Also introduce the observational SandboxEvent
vocabulary (Started, Denied, LimitHit, Exited) so modules can report sandbox
activity.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…/tinybox-core/src/shell/mod.rs,

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The deprecated allowance was moved from the import statement to a module-level
attribute so it also covers the rest of the file, which still relies on
deprecated APIs.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a module-level allow(deprecated) attribute to the shell
classification, environment guard, executor, and scan modules so the
existing deprecated API usage no longer emits warnings.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The unenforceable network allowlist tests across the core, docker, linux and
microvm backends now assert against the full create result instead of
unwrapping the error first, which keeps the assertion in one place. Doc
comments in the linux probe module also wrap AppArmor in backticks for
consistency.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Tests now use unwrap_or_default for optional problem messages and return
Result from fallible tests instead of unwrapping, so a failure surfaces as
a test error rather than a panic.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The allowlist refusal test now matches on the returned Result instead of unwrapping the error first, so the assertion covers the Ok case as well and no longer panics on unexpected success.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Adds a scope section to AGENTS.md and README.md stating that tinybox only
enforces confinement and reports events, leaving policy, approval, audit and
command classification to tinysecurity, and noting the deprecation of the
shell classification helpers. The TinyBus module README now advertises
contract version 1.19 and describes the Allowlist and SandboxEvent additions.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformat the deprecated attribute notes and re-export lists to satisfy rustfmt line width limits, and sort the event re-export alphabetically among its neighbours. No behaviour changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1d594

The current backends refuse allowlists rather than exposing the validation gap. Clarify the contract and event-reporting documentation and correct metadata validation; these are bounded follow-ups rather than a demonstrated merge blocker.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1d594

The new allowlist validator accepts some equivalent spellings of metadata endpoints despite its stated protection. Current exposure is limited because every shipped backend rejects allowlists before creating a sandbox. Event definitions and prerequisite diagnostics do not themselves add execution privileges or network enforcement.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The newly introduced validator does not uphold its metadata-endpoint rejection contract for equivalent host representations. For example, metadata.google.internal. and an expanded spelling of fd00:ec2::254 pass the textual checks. This is a shared control-contract defect, not a demonstrated network exploit in shipped backends: all currently refuse Allowlist. Any future enforcing backend must independently block metadata addresses after resolution rather than treating successful validation as sufficient.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The defect is shared by consumers of core allowlist validation, but no inspected shipped creation path turns an accepted allowlist into network access. Conditional metadata exposure would depend on a future or external enforcing implementation and its host environment. Tenant scope, reachable credentials and external caller privileges are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The two retained findings identify metadata-check bypasses through equivalent host representations. Request-provided strings reach the textual validator unchanged. The current attack chain stops at unsupported-policy refusal before sandbox creation; actual SSRF or credential access is not demonstrated by the reviewed implementations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Policy propagation preserves Allowlist rather than granting broader egress. Unsupported constraints return a typed network refusal. The event sink only receives observations, and the reviewed event vocabulary has no runtime bus stream or event-driven approval path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — For ordinary allowlist refusal, no backend sandbox resource is recorded and the module removes its empty slot. Existing Close logic waits on the slot and retains resources whose cleanup remains pending. These controls bound failure containment, but do not establish request authentication or prove every interruption and recovery state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Canonicalize supported IP literals and DNS names before metadata comparison. Before enabling enforcement, reject forbidden resolved addresses, pin the permitted addresses and preserve fail-closed behavior through rule-installation failure and recovery. Exercise equivalent IPv6 forms, trailing-dot names and DNS-to-metadata aliases against those controls.

P1 Badge Refuse stored allowlists before treating them as egress

When an Allowlist record reaches NamespaceSandbox::exec through the public Store::insert API or a persisted store rather than this version's create path, this returns true; bwrap in crates/tinybox-linux/src/sandbox/args.rs consequently omits --unshare-net, and exec never calls refuse_allowlist. The unsupported allowlist is therefore widened to unrestricted host egress instead of returning ConstraintNotEnforced; revalidate/refuse the policy during execution or make this backend's argument construction reject it.

P2 Badge Normalize metadata addresses before validating allowlists

The literal string matching accepts equivalent spellings of prohibited endpoints, such as the absolute DNS name metadata.google.internal. and the expanded IPv6 address fd00:ec2:0:0:0:0:0:254. Both identify endpoints that the new contract says validation must reject, so callers can receive Ok(()) for a forbidden allowlist; parse IP literals to IpAddr and normalize DNS names before comparison.

P2 Badge Verify AppArmor access before declaring bwrap unusable

On systems where kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=1 but the installed bwrap already has a profile granting userns, this branch still makes problem() return Some and is_usable() return false, even though the module's own status documentation says such profiled binaries may create namespaces. Probe the selected executable or represent this as an indeterminate restriction rather than unconditionally reporting the backend unusable.

Normalize IP literals before metadata checks.

is_metadata_host uses textual matching, so equivalent forms can pass validation. Parse IP literals, use Ipv6Addr::to_ipv4() to cover both mapped and IPv4-compatible IPv6 forms, and compare the resulting address with all three IPv4 metadata addresses. Trim trailing dots for DNS names, preserve the metadata names and fd00:ec2::254, and retain the existing broad ::ffff:169.254.169.254 prefix fallback. Do not use to_ipv4_mapped() for this conversion.

The current shipped backends refuse allowlists, so this is a validation gap today rather than a reachable SSRF path. An enforcing backend could otherwise accept a metadata endpoint.

Make the metadata list in the spec match the validator.

The spec lists five metadata endpoints. EgressAllowlist::is_metadata_host also refuses the bare name metadata and the ::ffff:169.254.169.254 IPv4-mapped prefix. The spec does not mention either one. A backend implementer who reads this spec as the full rule set can miss these two forms. Add them to the spec, or state that the validator list is authoritative.

Review comment at @README.md at line 405:

does not own authorization or command-classification decisions, while
distinguishing these from sandbox constraint policy and enforcement. Align the
wording with the “policy” description in the Layout section so the two
statements are consistent.

The module doc referenced `KvmProbe`, which no longer exists, so the link
rendered as plain text. Point it at the `probe` item that actually performs
the check.
