Summary

  • Core's cron domain now reaches the scheduler only through the tinyflows-bus Schedule contract (v3), running the compiled tinyflows module (v0.8.23). It no longer links tinyflows-schedule or the tinyflows-drivers schedule store: cargo tree -p openhuman -e normal -i tinyflows-schedule is empty.
  • New host adapters: a ScheduleHost callback object for each scope (cron/bus_host.rs: Execute / Failed / Deliver / ScheduleTrigger, bound to the scope's CoreContext) and the schedule document port over the scope's DocumentStore (cron/documents_port.rs).
  • Execution is pluggable. A JobType handler registry (cron/handlers.rs) replaces the hard-coded shell/agent/flow/system split and absorbs system_job_handlers. Embed hosts register their own handlers with RuntimeBuilder::cron_job_handler / Runtime::register_job_handler.
  • The tinyflows module is registered in the compiled registry (records_flows.rs, pinned to the published v0.8.23 checksum.toml). A new [components] tinyflows switch stops the cron service, and when it is off the cron.* controllers answer COMPONENT_DISABLED:tinyflows.
  • cron/scheduler_gate/ moved to platform/llm_gate/. It throttles LLM work by battery, CPU and SaaS mode, which is not scheduling. Config names and log prefixes are unchanged.

Problem

The repo rule is that hosts reach loadable components only through their *-bus contracts. tinyflows#120 had already moved scheduler execution, claims, retry, completion and persistence into the module, but core still drove tinyflows_schedule::runtime::Scheduler in-process. It also kept its own claim, run-record and JobStore adapters, and the contract was missing the typed records and schedule maths that the host needed.

Solution

  • Upstream first. tinyflows#143 moved the wire records (CronJob, Schedule, JobOrigin, Attempt/RunRecord/Completion, …) into tinyflows_bus::schedule, with the same JSON shape (the existing wire fixtures pass unchanged). It added nine members (NextRun, ValidateSchedule, RunsCloserThan, NormalizeExpression, ScheduleCronExpression, DefaultDelivery, CheckOriginRequirements, CheckPatch, TruncateCronOutput) and three store operations, and bumped the contract to v3. Released as v0.8.22.
  • Upstream fix found during the cutover. CronJobPatch.agent_id serialized null for "untouched", and the module reads a null as "clear", so any patch sent over the bus wiped the job's agent. Fixed in tinyflows#144 and released as v0.8.23, so there is no host workaround. The host regression test a_patch_over_the_bus_keeps_the_agent_definition_it_does_not_mention pins it.
  • Deleted from core: cron/claims.rs, scheduler/host.rs (the JobStore adapter), scheduler/run_record.rs, and the tinyflows_schedule re-export facade. Types now come from the contract.
  • Design choice: manual ticks. The module is started with manual_ticks: true and ticked by the host loop rather than running its own loop. This keeps the poll interval, the health-transition events and the live-agent reconcile in one place.
  • What stays in core: policy and I/O, meaning agent/shell/flow execution, chat/origin/alert delivery, failure classification, RPC, tools, seeding, system jobs and limits.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated. New suites: bus_host, documents_port, client, handlers, cutover (existing system, seeded and flow-schedule jobs keep firing; legacy cron_job_policies import), modules/tinyflows, a registry contract test, about_app, and json_rpc_cron_add_run_list_round_trip_over_the_tinyflows_module. Duplicates of runtime timing, claim and retry tests that the module already covers were dropped.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: enforced by the CI Fast diff-cover gate on this PR.
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, no feature rows added or removed. Cron behaviour is the same, only its execution moved.
  • Affected feature IDs: N/A, same reason.
  • No new external network dependencies. Tests run the module in-process (linked) or the staged release artifact against the mock backend.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, no release-cut UI surface changed.
  • Linked issue closed via Closes below.

Impact

  • Platforms: desktop, CLI and embed. Cron now needs the tinyflows module, which is released for every OS. With the module disabled through [components] tinyflows = false, cron is off.
  • Hosted profiles: each profile's sweep ticks an agent-only scheduler. A due shell or flow row in a profile is now refused and recorded as a failed run. Before, it was silently left untouched.
  • Compatibility: existing jobs keep firing, covered by the cutover regression tests. The legacy jobs.db import goes through the bus-typed read_legacy_cron.
  • Boundary exception: tinyflows-bus carries chrono, recorded as a temporary exception in module-boundaries.json.

The host-condition LLM gate was living under cron even though it throttles
all background AI work, not just cron jobs. It now sits in the platform
module as llm_gate, and every call site and doc reference was updated to
the new path.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The background-AI scheduler gate now lives under `platform::llm_gate`
instead of `cron::scheduler_gate`, since it is a host-level concern
unrelated to the cron poll loop. All call sites, docs, and the CI
ambient baseline were updated to the new path.

Bump the vendored tinyflows submodule to a revision that introduces the
tinyflows-bus crate, and register it in the app lockfile so the runtime can
depend on the new bus package.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The cron domain now depends on the tinyflows bus contract instead of the
schedule crate, and the drivers dependency became optional so the cron job
store is no longer linked directly. Legacy cron imports use the schedule-read
reader and replay bus records through the module's store operations, while the
real module is linked only in test builds as a fixture.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…ws-bus

The linked-modules crate gains an optional tinyflows-module dependency with a matching feature, included in the all feature set. The embed crate's test-only dependency moves from tinyflows-schedule to tinyflows-bus, where the schedule types now live.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Register the tinyflows module behind its own cargo feature so it can be

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
…stry tests

Add tinyflows to the expected registry id list and to the feature-gated
enabled ids so the linked module tests account for the new module.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce record types for module flows so the registry can describe
flow-shaped modules alongside the existing module records.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a schema for component configuration so runtime components can be described and validated consistently. The runtime component definitions now build on this shared structure.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a registry that tracks runtime components and their lifecycle
state so subsystems can be discovered and initialized in a consistent
order.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Claim records are now checked against the current run before a job is
dispatched, so a claim left behind by a previous scheduler pass no longer
causes the same job to run twice. Tests cover the stale-claim path.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Cron job types, schedules, and delivery configs are now imported from
tinyflows_bus::schedule instead of tinyflows_schedule, following the move of
these types into the bus crate. No behaviour changes.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Pulled the duplicated per-node execution logic into a single helper so
the run loop and the retry path share one implementation. Behaviour is
unchanged.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a tinyflows module to the core modules registry, wiring it in
alongside the existing entries so the new functionality is available to
callers.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The client now tracks in-flight job ids and skips scheduling a job that is already running, so a reconnect no longer triggers a second execution of the same job.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The cron client module was no longer referenced anywhere in the
codebase, so it has been deleted to reduce dead code.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Extracted the documents port from the cron module into a dedicated file so the
port definition can be reused and tested independently of the scheduler. No
behaviour change.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The scheduler now skips a job if its previous run is still in progress, avoiding concurrent executions of the same task. This prevents overlapping ticks from firing a job twice and corrupting shared state.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add handlers for system-level cron jobs so scheduled maintenance tasks can run through the same dispatch path as user-defined jobs.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a bus host that wires the cron scheduler into the message bus so scheduled jobs can be dispatched through the same transport as other events.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The scheduler now checks whether a job is already running before dispatching it, so a restart no longer fires jobs that were mid-execution. This avoids duplicate side effects when the process is restarted while jobs are in flight.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Scheduled jobs now route their output through a delivery step that
resolves the job's configured targets and sends results after each run.
This makes cron results reachable outside the scheduler instead of being
discarded once the run completes.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The scheduler now records the last run time before dispatching a job so that a restart mid-execution does not re-trigger the same job. Previously a crash between dispatch and bookkeeping could cause the job to run twice.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Register the new tinyflows module in the pin map, submodule tag fetch
list, and self-hosted asset checks, and include it in the Rust test
scripts' source and released module sets so it is staged and loaded
alongside the other modules.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The registry now contains one more record, so the assertion tracking the number of parsed SourceSpecs was bumped from 12 to 13 to match.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Document the cron module's purpose and structure so the scheduling
behaviour is easier to discover and maintain.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add the tinyflows scheduler module to the module and registry READMEs, covering its proxy and host-object wiring, the `COMPONENT_DISABLED:tinyflows` refusal and the static-link test fixture. Document the new `tinyflows` component flag in the components guide and explain how it differs from `flows`, which only stops schedule-triggered flows.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Document tinyflows in the loadable module table, covering the scheduler
runtime, cron job store and schedule maths along with its tinyflows-bus
schedule contract.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Document the tinyhumansai#7397 cutover that moves scheduler ownership to the tinyflows module, superseding the earlier section on who runs the scheduler. The new section records the module's contract and schedule maths, the four host adapters that remain in core, the deleted files, and the temporary chrono exception in tinyflows-bus.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
….rs,crates/openhuman-core/src/p

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Add a test asserting that disabling tinyflows stops the cron service while
leaving channels untouched, and that the separate flows switch keeps the
scheduler running. This pins the distinction between the two flags so a
future change cannot silently conflate them.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Update the locked windows-sys versions across several transitive dependencies and bump tinyflows to 0.8.22.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Introduce a cron client that drives tinyflows execution, along with
test fixtures covering the new scheduling path.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted imports, function signatures, and call sites to satisfy rustfmt, with no behavioural change.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Reformatted the ValidatedBatch capability check in the desktop upgrade

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
The tinyflows module is bumped to v0.8.23, whose contract now omits an
unset agent_id when serializing a patch, so the client-side workaround
that stripped the field before sending is no longer needed and has been
removed along with its test. The registry pins and checksums are updated
to the published release.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Update the lockfile for the tinyflows 0.8.23 release and unify the
transitive windows-sys dependency on 0.60.2 across the graph.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

📝 Walkthrough

Cron scheduling, schedule calculations, and job/run storage now use the Tinyflows module through bus contracts and host adapters. A new tinyflows component switch controls cron availability. The changes also add job-kind handler registration and move the LLM gate from the cron domain to the platform module.

Changes: Tinyflows Scheduler Cutover

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tinyflows component and module integration
crates/openhuman-core/Cargo.toml, crates/openhuman-core/src/config/schema/components.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/core/runtime/components.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/modules/*, crates/openhuman-modules-linked/*, docs/gitbooks/en/developing/components.md, scripts/ci/*, vendor/tinyflows
Adds the enabled-by-default tinyflows component, registers and links the Tinyflows module, and updates module build and registry support. Cron services and listed automation capabilities are disabled when the component is off.
Bus-backed scheduler and cron storage
crates/openhuman-core/src/cron/{bus_host.rs,client.rs,documents_port.rs,scheduler.rs,store.rs,mod.rs}, crates/openhuman-core/src/cron/*tests.rs
Cron storage and schedule operations now use typed bus calls and a scoped document port. The host starts module schedulers, serves callbacks, and handles manual runs. The tests cover callback behavior, document access, client operations, and the scheduler cutover.
Job handlers, cron operations, and imports
crates/openhuman-core/src/cron/{handlers.rs,ops.rs,schemas.rs,job_builder.rs,limits.rs,profiles/cron.rs}, crates/openhuman-core/src/cron/scheduler/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/storage/import/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/tools/impl/system/schedule.rs
Adds a shared job-handler registry and built-in shell, agent, and flow handlers. Cron APIs and legacy imports use module-backed schedule and store operations. Profile sweeps use scoped cron storage and agent-only scheduler ticks.
LLM gate relocation
crates/openhuman-core/src/platform/llm_gate/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/platform/mod.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/agent/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/flows/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/inference/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/security/credentials/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/*, crates/openhuman-core/src/integrations/task_sources/*
Exposes the LLM gate under platform and updates capacity checks, signed-out state checks, credential updates, tests, and references to use it.
Embedded API and end-to-end coverage
crates/openhuman-embed/src/cron.rs, crates/openhuman-embed/src/runtime/*, crates/openhuman-embed/tests/*, tests/json_rpc_e2e.rs, scripts/test-rust-*.sh
Exports job-handler types and adds runtime registration with restoration on drop. Test helpers link Tinyflows, and the JSON-RPC end-to-end test covers adding, running, listing, and removing a cron job.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6a315

Moving cron scheduling into the Tinyflows module leaves a few issues to fix before merge. Turning off scheduled jobs also stops expired-blob cleanup. Embedded handler registrations can outlive the runtime that registered them. Callbacks for a dropped agent can run in the operator's scope. Some failed Run Now results can be silently discarded.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6a315

Scheduled work now depends on a separately loaded component. Normal execution safeguards remain, but removing overlapping execution-handler overrides can reactivate a retired handler. Identity-loss and interrupted-run recovery also remain incompletely established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new process-global handler registry can restore a retired execution handler. Register A, register B, drop A, then drop B: dropping A leaves B active, but B still retains A as its predecessor and restores it. Subsequent jobs of that kind receive the retired handler with their bound execution context and security policy. This weakens lifetime-based control revocation. Normal embedded shutdown drops registrations newest-first and avoids this sequence; registration requires trusted native host code, and no untrusted registration path was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller admitted to a document callback can manipulate all four cron collections within that object's bound scope, but collection validation prevents this adapter from directly accessing other domains. Cross-scope access would require reaching another served object's address. External caller reachability was not established; loaded native modules already possess process-level authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained authorization finding concerns loss of the bound identity: a failed weak-context upgrade permits callback work to continue, and dispatch-context resolution falls back to ambient identity. Outside SaaS this may resolve to the process default. The fallback and executor scoping predate this PR; a new exploit path or increased exposure was not established. SaaS ambient resolution excludes the process default, and storage rejects calls without a profile. No bypass of agent-only kind restrictions was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — DocumentsPort enforces scope binding, operation shape and collection membership, but contains no caller-identity authorization check. Host objects are served on the shared module connection. Admission therefore depends on the surrounding module-bus trust model rather than per-request authentication in this adapter; the remaining caller-authorization gap is not a demonstrated vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The adapter preserves storage preconditions and conflict error kinds, supporting module-owned compare-and-swap logic. Inspected tests assert duplicate absent-write conflicts and reject mixed batches containing an unauthorized collection. These checks do not establish end-to-end claim ownership, exactly-once effects, or recovery after a callback is interrupted.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider treating expiration of an explicitly bound context as revocation, distinct from a deliberately unbound host callback. This would strengthen an existing identity invariant rather than remedy a weakness shown to originate in this PR.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay connected to [#7397]. The Tinyflows component switch, module registry entry, bus host, document port, handler registry, and related tests support loading and operating the scheduler outside core. The scheduler_gate rename and move to platform::llm_gate preserve the host-owned power and CPU gate while separating it from scheduling, which matches the issue's statement that this gate is not part of the scheduler runtime. Documentation and reference updates support these changes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#7397] requires the retry budget and single-flight policy to move onto the job model, removal of the cron_job_policies table, and a migration regression test. The PR moves scheduler execution, claims, retries, completion, and schedule operations to the Tinyflows module. However, the supplied change summary still shows cron_job_policies as an allowed document-port collection and does not show removal of the host policy module or a policy-row migration test. The other major [#7397] objectives are covered: module-owned polling and scheduling, bus-based delivery validation and schedule math, a schedule-trigger callback, seeded/system/flow cutover tests, and JSON-RPC coverage.

Resolution

Move retry and single-flight policy storage to the module-owned job model. Remove the host cron_job_policies table and add its migration. Add an automated regression test that verifies policy rows survive the upgrade.

Keep the blob sweep running when Tinyflows is disabled.

When tinyflows = false, this line clears services.cron. The services.cron branch in crates/openhuman-core/src/core/runtime/services.rs also starts blob_sweep. Disabling scheduled jobs therefore stops expired-blob cleanup, and expired blobs continue to occupy storage. Give the sweep an independent service gate, or start it outside the cron branch.

Update the service gating around s.cron and the blob_sweep startup so disabling

Serialize the three Shell handler tests.

Each test reads kind_handler(&JobType::Shell) to build its Marker before calling register_kind. Parallel test threads can read the same handler, then register wrappers that do not include each other. The active marker can therefore forward bus-host-test:* to the real shell handler, causing the assertions to fail.

KindRegistration::drop does not remove a newer handler, but out-of-order drops can leave a stale handler installed. Hold one shared tokio::sync::Mutex for the full duration of these tests so registration and cleanup occur sequentially.

Serialize the three Shell handler tests by acquiring the same shared
tokio::sync::Mutex for each test’s full duration, including registration and
cleanup. Apply this to the tests that build a Marker from
kind_handler(&JobType::Shell) and call register_kind; leave unrelated tests
unchanged.

Reject callbacks when their bound context is gone.

On a non-SaaS host, DispatchCtx::ambient() falls back to the process-default CoreContext when the spawned task has no scoped context. storage::current_scope() then resolves Scope::local(). A dropped agent binding can therefore run Execute, Deliver, or ScheduleTrigger with the agent's config and security policy but the operator's context.

In SaaS, this exact fallback fails closed. The binding must still refuse work whenever it was created with a context that no longer upgrades.

Do not silently await the future when a bound context is gone. Keep the upgraded Arc<CoreContext> alive while running the operation. Preserve the existing unbound-binding behavior. A helper such as bound_ctx() -> Result<Option<Arc<CoreContext>>, String> can distinguish an unbound binding from a dropped context and return a non-retryable Attempt or bus error for the latter.

Return DeliveryStatus::Failed for delivery errors.

run_delivery::deliver publishes completion as successful for a best-effort job, but then returns the delivery error. ScheduleHost::deliver converts that error into a bus error, so the module receives no DeliveryStatus and cannot apply its documented best_effort rule. Return "failed" instead.

Update ScheduleHost::deliver so errors returned by run_delivery::deliver produce
DeliveryStatus::Failed instead of a bus error, allowing the module to apply its
best_effort rule. Preserve bus-error handling for failures of the offload
operation itself.

Dropping an older guard after a newer guard can bring back a handler that was already unregistered.

The sequence is: register_kind(A) saves the default, then register_kind(B) saves A. Drop the guard for A first. The registry currently holds B, so nothing changes. Then drop the guard for B. B is still current, so the registry restores previous = A. A's guard is gone, so A stays registered for the rest of the process. Its embedder runtime may already be torn down.

The module docs say "dropping an older guard never disturbs a newer handler". That holds. But B's drop still brings back a handler whose registration has ended. The test at handlers_tests.rs lines 57-64 accepts this outcome explicitly. For the embed Runtime::register_job_handler, two runtimes dropped in creation order leave the first runtime's handler live.

Fix: keep a stack of (id, handler) entries for each kind. On drop, remove this guard's entry, and make the current handler the top of the stack, or the default if the stack is empty.

Update KindRegistration registration and Drop handling to track each active
registration by identity in a per-kind stack instead of restoring a saved
previous handler. On drop, remove only that guard’s entry and set the current
handler to the newest remaining registration, or the default when none remain.

Match the exact refusal message. Do not match any output that ends with "is already running".

run_and_record checks the output with output.ends_with("is already running"). A failed shell job can print output that ends with this text, for example "error: process is already running". A failed agent reply can do the same. In that case the real run is discarded. The queued placeholder is deleted. No run or last_run is recorded, and no failure alert is delivered.

execute_via_bus produces exactly format!("cron job '{}' is already running", job.id). Compare against that string. A typed error from execute_job_now would be more robust.

In run_and_record, replace the suffix check with an exact comparison against the
refusal message produced by execute_via_bus for the current job, so ordinary
failed-run output ending with “is already running” is still recorded and handled
as a failure.

Gate the Schedule-object test on the modules feature.

When tests run without modules, proxy() returns the no-loader error. The expect("module attaches") call then fails before the Schedule assertion runs. Add #[cfg(feature = "modules")] to this test. Keep the disabled-component tests available in both builds.

Keep registration and retention in the same critical section.

If two threads register the same kind, the second registration can reach kind_handlers first. CoreGuard::drop then pops the registrations in the wrong order. KindRegistration can leave the first runtime-owned handler installed after the runtime drops, so a later runtime can dispatch jobs through that stale handler. Lock kind_handlers before calling register_kind, and hold the lock through push.

In the registration flow that calls register_kind, acquire the kind_handlers
lock before registering and hold it through storing the returned registration,

Set the fire time when the scheduling request is made.

If mock setup, profile construction, and the first chat turns take more than six seconds, Script supplies a past At time. The agent job cannot be scheduled, and the test fails before the sweep. Generate the deadline for the scheduling request and retain that deadline for wait_until.
