Summary

  • Flow-run Langfuse traces now go to Langfuse v4 over OTLP (/telemetry/langfuse/otel/v1/traces) instead of the legacy /telemetry/langfuse/ingestion batch proxy.
  • Trace name, session, tags, release and flow metadata (flow_id, trigger, status, …) ride on every span, as v4 requires. Node spans keep the Agent Graph view keys and flow_id as observation metadata.
  • Agent turns already exported over OTLP. With this PR, no trace leaves the core on the legacy batch path.
  • Docs: agent-observability.md, the progress_tracing README and the module docs describe the v4 path.

Problem

Langfuse v4 is observations-first. Langfuse Cloud becomes v4-only on 2026-11-16, when the legacy /api/public/ingestion trace path is removed. flows::tinyflows::langfuse_export still sent each flow run as a legacy batch, so flow traces would stop arriving after the cutover. Per the v4 ingestion migration, trace-level attributes also have to be on every observation, because v4 filters observations directly.

Solution

  • vendor/tinyagents is pinned to 5f6dce50, the merge of tinyagents#467. The only other change since the previous pin (8f1bc5f2) is tinyagents#465, a CI release-tag fix.

  • tinyagents#467 (upstream, owns the exporter) adds GraphLangfuseExporter::build_otlp_requests / send_observations_otlp over a new pure trace_export::ingestion_otlp projection. It also makes LangfuseClient::send_otlp send x-langfuse-ingestion-version: 4 and treat a partial OTLP rejection as an error.

  • The host builds the OTLP requests through flow_otlp_requests, with service.name = openhuman (the same as agent turns), and sends them through the client's OTLP endpoint inside the existing 10s cap. The flow is still best-effort: every failure is logged and swallowed.

  • Backend: no change needed. proxyLangfuseOtelTraces already stamps the authenticated user on every span and forwards with the v4 header.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated: flow_export_targets_the_v4_otlp_proxy_route and otlp_flow_trace_puts_flow_attributes_on_every_span. The existing no-op and API-key-skip failure paths still pass.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: to be confirmed by CI. The new builder and route are covered; the send loop is reached only with a live session credential, as before.
  • Coverage matrix: N/A, behaviour-only change.
  • Affected feature IDs: N/A, no matrix row for flow telemetry.
  • No new external network dependencies. Tests use no network.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, not a release-cut surface.
  • Linked issue: N/A, no tracking issue.

Impact

  • Desktop and CLI cores with observability.share_usage_data on (the default): flow traces keep reaching Langfuse after the v4 cutover.
  • Compatibility: OTLP span ids are deterministic hashes of the previous observation ids. Scores that targeted legacy observation ids on flow traces would need the new span id (no host code does this today).

    • Flow traces include run-level details across spans, with node-specific details on the relevant span.
    • Trace export failures and timeouts are logged without interrupting a flow.
  • Documentation
    • Updated observability guidance to describe the current trace export path and what information is included.

Add tests asserting that flow exports target the v4 OTLP proxy route and that
every span in a flow trace carries the expected Langfuse attributes, including
session, release, flow metadata and node-level fields.

Flow run traces now go through the backend's OTLP proxy route instead of
the legacy ingestion batch path, matching the agent-turn tracing path and
Langfuse v4's observation filtering. The exporter builds OTLP requests
under the product's service name, and a partial rejection is now treated
as a failure rather than tolerated.

The flow run exporter now builds the OTLP requests itself and sends them one
by one instead of relying on send_observations_otlp, so a partial rejection no
longer aborts the whole export. The outer timeout still caps the entire send
loop, and the debug log now reports how many requests were pushed.

…h deprecation

Update the progress-tracing README, langfuse module docs, and the agent
observability guide to describe trace export over the OTLP proxy route rather
than the legacy batch ingestion path. The legacy route is no longer used for
traces because Langfuse Cloud removes it on 2026-11-16, and the docs now note
that flow runs export through the same OTLP route.

📝 Walkthrough

The flow-run exporter now builds and sends OTLP trace requests through the backend proxy to Langfuse v4. Tests and tracing documentation describe the route, request attributes, and span handling.

The flow exporter builds OTLP requests with the product service name and sends them sequentially through the OTLP proxy. Request-building errors, send failures, and partial rejection are logged; sending has a 10-second timeout. Tests cover the v4 proxy endpoint and span attributes. The README and observability documentation describe the OTLP path and Langfuse v4 span handling. The tinyagents submodule pointer changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d2a29

Flow-tracing documentation needs two bounded corrections, but no verified export failure blocks merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d2a29

The migration preserves the existing session-only credential selection, configured backend destination, and telemetry-sharing gate. No security regression is demonstrated. However, authentication and user attribution through the new flow-export transport remain only partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is flow-run telemetry sent under an eligible session to the configured backend. No new ability for flow metadata to select a credential destination is demonstrated. Maximum downstream tenant or project exposure cannot be bounded without the proxy's authentication and routing implementation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The host passes the captured session token as bearer authentication to the client. Documentation assigns backend bearer validation, authenticated-user attribution, and upstream Langfuse credentials to the proxy. Those server-side responsibilities remain unverified; the unchanged agent OTLP counterpart supports the routing pattern but does not prove its enforcement for flow exports.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A failure, interruption, or timeout after an accepted request can leave an incomplete trace. The host does not retry or roll back accepted telemetry, but this partial state is non-authoritative and cannot rewrite the already finalized flow result. Dependency retries and downstream deduplication remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Close the end-to-end contract gap by verifying the pinned sender and deployed proxy together: bearer preservation, rejection of unauthenticated requests, authoritative user attribution, project isolation, and partial-rejection behavior. This is a verification proposal, not an observed control failure.

P2 Badge Send flow OTLP through the attributed backend client

When a signed-in user completes a flow with usage sharing enabled, this sends through the generic LangfuseClient constructed with only the URL and bearer, rather than the installed backend transport used by agent/progress_tracing/otlp.rs. It therefore cannot attach the host transport's sanitized x-sdk-name, leaving every newly introduced flow OTLP request unattributed; send these payloads with the attributed backend client or pass its attribution headers into this client.

Do not document run input and output for flow traces.

The flow trace configuration is metadata-only. Remove the claim that the root observation carries the run’s overall input and output. Scope the environment claim to exporters that provide that field; the flow exporter does not set it in its trace configuration.
