Wasmer JS SDK - Open Source Alternative to WebContainers #2159

Description

@syrusakbary

Hi!

I'm Syrus, from Wasmer. We just launched a free and open-source alternative to WebContainers. It not only can run Node.js applications (including Next.js), but also Python and Postgres, ...

Would love to hear your thoughts!

    @syrusakbary do you have a working example of using wasmer sdk as replacement of webcontainers. Something like bolt.diy?

    Hey @khabubuphathu, yes we have a working example.

    The wasmer.sh website can run Node.js fully (right now only Chrome, but soon Firefox and Safari).

    You can enter it and run:

    cd node
    node server.js

    And you'll see the server running.

    The source code is available here: https://github.com/wasmerio/wasmer-sdk/tree/main/wasmer-sh

    Let us know if you have any questions or issues on the wasmer-sdk repository!

    @syrusakbary hi, can we also run python http servers with wasmer?

    Yes, you can run Python fully as well!

    Hey @syrusakbary, thanks for sharing this!

    I'm building CoderX, a small side project for practicing full-stack development. Currently, it supports practicing the MERN stack, and I'm planning to add support for Python-based development (Flask, FastAPI, Django) as well.

    I'm currently using WebContainers for the in-browser development environment, mainly because it doesn't require me to maintain any infrastructure on my side. Wasmer SDK looks really interesting as an alternative, especially with Python and HTTP servers being supported.

    The project is deployed at https://coderx-two.vercel.app/ if you'd like to take a look. It's still an early-stage side project, so I'd really appreciate any thoughts on whether Wasmer could fit this kind of use case.

    And please don't try to break it 😅

    Hey @Shushanth101 , yes I confirm that will fully fit this kind of use case.

    As a pro side, we are even adding support for Postgres on Wasmer, so you could really run anything!

    @Shushanth101

    Ohh that's really cool, especially the Postgres support. @syrusakbary

    What about MongoDB? Since CoderX currently focuses on MERN, having MongoDB available in the sandbox would be really useful for me.

    I'll definitely try out Wasmer for the Python side as well.
