🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Use the caller-provided output size for the intermediate buffer.
row_count * num_outputs() is only valid for default inference. per_tree and leaf_id require output sized from num_trees(). The current intermediate buffer can therefore be undersized.
Allocate and wrap buffer_out with output.size().

} else {
- buffer_out = buffer<io_t>{output.data(), row_count * num_outputs(), memory_type()};
+ buffer_out = buffer<io_t>{output.data(), output.size(), memory_type()};
}As per coding guidelines, temporary inference buffers must be sized for the complete batch and prediction kind.

row_count * num_outputs()is only valid for default inference
This is not correct. num_outputs() already returns the correct size for per_tree and leaf_id prediction type. See

@chyunsu3, you are correct. num_outputs() already returns the correct per-row output count for default_kind, per_tree, and leaf_id. Therefore, row_count * num_outputs() sizes buffer_out correctly.
I withdraw this finding. No change is required.

Learning: In `cpp/include/nvforest/decision_forest.hpp`, `decision_forest::num_outputs()` returns the correct per-row output count for `infer_kind::default_kind`, `infer_kind::per_tree`, and `infer_kind::leaf_id`. In `cpp/include/nvforest/forest_model.hpp`, intermediate inference output buffers can therefore be sized as `row_count * num_outputs()` for all supported inference kinds.

I don't think the earlier rebuttal is correct. decision_forest::num_outputs() accounts for the inference kind only when it is passed explicitly. forest_model::num_outputs() doesn't forward predict_type, so this allocation still uses the default prediction width.
For per_tree and leaf_id, that can leave the intermediate output buffer undersized and cause out-of-bounds writes. Please use concrete_forest.num_outputs(predict_type) for sizing and add cross-memory regression coverage for both modes.

After reviewing this again, I have some concerns with the changes in this PR; see the inline comments. I think we should address those and keep this targeted for 26.12, rather than cherry-picking it into 26.10.

I’d like to address the remaining correctness and test-coverage gaps before merging, and agree on the stream-pool performance tradeoff. See the inline comments.

Please extend this test to run inference and check the predictions with the deprecated handle= argument. That must continue working during the deprecation period. Please also cover successful inference with a valid stream-like object passed via stream=, such as a CuPy stream.

The cross-memory path now runs copies and inference on a single stream, removing the option to overlap transfers with partitioned inference through a stream pool. I think we should consider how to preserve that option with the new API.
I ran targeted C++ benchmarks on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell. For host input and device output with 65,536 rows, 32 features, and a 128-tree, depth-6 forest, median synchronized latency increased from 0.395 ms with the baseline RMM pool/four-stream configuration to 0.467 ms in this PR—an 18.5% increase. Most other tested cases were unchanged or faster, so this is a workload-specific regression rather than a general slowdown.

I took a stab at it: a902d5f. This interface allows for a partitioned inference without using RAFT or RMM as part of the interface.
Companion PR: NVIDIA/cuml#8601. To minimize the disruption in the cuML CI, we should merge this PR together with NVIDIA/cuml#8601 .
raft::handle_tandnvforest::handle_tand use CUDA streams directly.cuda::bufferinstead ofrmm::device_buffer. Sincecuda::bufferrequires NVCC to build, we need to use PIMPL with type erasure.handleparameter is now deprecated and its use will trigger aFutureWarning.
