JustClock

Automatic work time tracking for developers. JustClock runs quietly inside your IDE and logs the hours you actually spend on a project — no manual timers, no stopwatch, no forgotten entries.

How it works

JustClock's plugin code is closed-source (see About this repository below), but the mechanism is simple and worth documenting here, since "what does it actually send" is the first question most people have before installing anything into their IDE.

    A[IDE plugin] -->|project is focused and you're active| B[Local active-time counter]

  • Detection is local and per-project. The plugin identifies the open project/workspace and only counts time while that window is focused and you're not idle.
  • Sync is periodic, not continuous. Roughly every 2 minutes, the accumulated active-time delta is sent to your account — not a live stream of activity.
  • The payload is intentionally narrow. A project identifier, the active-time delta, and your account ID. No file contents, no keystrokes, no telemetry beyond that. See Data we collect / What we never touch and the Privacy Policy for the full picture.
  • One account, multiple IDEs. Install the plugin in any combination of supported IDEs under the same account, and the dashboard merges the hours into one timeline instead of keeping separate logs per editor.

Supported IDEs

JustClock ships as three plugins/extensions, each covering a whole IDE family from a single install.

JetBrains family

One plugin, installed once, works the same across:

VS Code family

Same extension, works in VS Code and every major VS Code–based fork:

Visual Studio

Installation

JetBrains IDEs

  1. Install JustClock from the JetBrains Marketplace.
  2. Go to Settings > Tools > JustClock.
  3. Get your API key from your justclock.dev dashboard.
  4. Paste the key and hit OK.

VS Code

  1. Install the extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace.
  2. Open Settings (Ctrl/Cmd + ,) and search for "JustClock".
  3. Get your API key from your justclock.dev dashboard and paste it to save.

Cursor, Devin, Trae and other VS Code forks

These editors install extensions from the Open VSX Registry, not the official VS Code Marketplace (a licensing restriction from Microsoft, not something we chose):

  1. Install the extension from Open VSX.
  2. Open Settings (Ctrl/Cmd + ,) and search for "JustClock".
  3. Get your API key from your justclock.dev dashboard and paste it to save.

Some forks (e.g. Devin) show a one-time "trusted domain" prompt the first time the API key link opens justclock.dev. Allow it — declining it means time data won't sync.

Visual Studio 2022+

  1. Install the extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace.
  2. Go to Tools > Options > JustClock (or run JustClock: Open Settings from the Tools menu).
  3. Get your API key from your justclock.dev dashboard, paste it and hit OK.
  4. Requires .NET Framework 4.7.2 or newer.

FAQ / Troubleshooting

Where do I get an API key? Sign up for the free trial at justclock.dev, then copy your key from the dashboard.

Does JustClock slow down my IDE? No. It runs as a lightweight background process and syncs in minute-level intervals — it doesn't touch your build, compile times, or editor responsiveness.

Does it read my code? No. JustClock only measures active time in the IDE and the project identifier — never file contents, keystrokes, or any other code. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Can I track multiple projects? Yes, time is tracked automatically per project/workspace as you switch between them.

Time isn't syncing — what do I check first?

  • Confirm the API key in the plugin settings matches the one on your dashboard.
  • On VS Code forks, make sure you accepted the one-time trusted-domain prompt for justclock.dev.
  • Check justclock.dev/tech for minimum requirements (OS, internet connection, API rate limits).
  • Still stuck? Open an issue.

I found a bug or have a feature idea — where do I report it? Use GitHub Issues on this repository — see below.

Where can I see what changed between versions? See CHANGELOG.md — or the version history tab on each plugin's own marketplace listing, which is the authoritative source per-IDE.

Is anything planned that isn't built yet? Yes — see ROADMAP.md for what's currently being considered. Nothing there is a commitment or a release date, just direction.

Reporting bugs & requesting features

This repository's Issues are the official channel for bug reports and feature requests. Please use the provided templates so we can triage faster:

Before opening an issue, check justclock.dev/tech to rule out an environment/requirements mismatch.
