Summary

  • .NET has no built-in zstd support, so the QWP egress query client's compression=zstd/auto pulled ZstdSharp.Port into net-questdb-client itself as a hard dependency. This moves it into a new optional net-questdb-client-zstd package, loaded at runtime by reflection — mirroring the earlier TCP-auth/BouncyCastle split in chore: BREAKING 💥 refactor dependencies and update BouncyCastle.Cryptography to the latest #34.
  • compression=zstd now fails fast with a clear ConfigError before connecting if the plugin package isn't referenced, instead of retrying it silently across every addr= candidate and surfacing a generic wrapped error.
  • compression=auto degrades to raw automatically when the plugin is absent (unchanged happy-path when it's present). compression=raw (the default) is entirely unaffected.

Breaking change

Any consumer currently using compression=zstd needs to add a reference to net-questdb-client-zstd after this change — previously it worked out of the box since ZstdSharp.Port was bundled. Flagged in the commit as refactor(qwp)!.

Test plan

  • Full solution builds clean across net6.0–net10.0 (dotnet build net-questdb-client.sln -c Release)
  • Full unit suite: 1873 passed, 0 failed, 62 skipped (pre-existing, live-server-gated) — no regressions
  • All existing zstd/compression/failover tests pass through the real reflection-loaded plugin (not a bypass)
  • New net-questdb-client-zstd-absent-tests project, which references only net-questdb-client (no plugin), proves against the real Assembly.Load path:
    • explicit compression=zstd throws IngressError(ConfigError) before connecting
    • compression=auto sends no Accept-Encoding header and does not throw
    • compression=raw is unaffected

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added optional Zstandard compression support through a separate package for .NET 7–10.
    • Added decompression for compressed query results when the optional package is installed.
    • Added automatic fallback to raw compression when Zstandard is unavailable.
    • Added clear configuration errors when Zstandard is explicitly requested without the package.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified compression setup, fallback behavior, and trimming requirements.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for available, missing, and unusable Zstandard plugins.

…ent-zstd package

.NET has no built-in zstd support, so compression=zstd/auto on the QWP
egress query client pulled in ZstdSharp.Port as a hard dependency of
net-questdb-client itself. Move it into a new optional package
(net-questdb-client-zstd), loaded at runtime by reflection, mirroring
the earlier TCP-auth/BouncyCastle split (#34).

BREAKING: compression=zstd now requires an explicit reference to
net-questdb-client-zstd; without it, it fails fast with a clear
ConfigError before connecting instead of working out of the box.
compression=auto degrades to raw automatically when the package is
absent, rather than throwing. compression=raw (the default) is
unaffected.

Adds a dedicated test project (net-questdb-client-zstd-absent-tests)
that references only net-questdb-client, proving all three behaviors
against the real Assembly.Load("net-questdb-client-zstd") path rather
than a stand-in.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The client now loads Zstandard decompression from an optional plugin. Explicit zstd mode fails when the plugin is unavailable. auto mode falls back to raw. The change adds plugin packaging, documentation, and tests for absent and broken plugins.

The client defines IZstdDecompressor. QwpZstdCodec resolves and validates the optional plugin through reflection. The plugin delegates decompression to ZstdSharp.Port.
Compression negotiation and result decoding
src/net-questdb-client/Qwp/Query/QwpQueryWebSocketClient.cs
Explicit zstd mode reports a configuration error when the plugin is unavailable. auto mode negotiates raw compression only in that case. Compressed result batches use the plugin abstraction.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 91491

The new optional zstd package can fail during type loading before the client applies its intended fallback and configuration-error behavior, causing automatic compression to fail instead of using raw compression and explicit zstd requests to return the wrong error. The plugin-loading path should be corrected before merging.

Review (level 3)

Reviewed at head 3ee3d0c (originally 828862c; b482e00 and 3ee3d0c were added during this review to address two of the findings below).

Step 1–2: PR context

Title and description follow Conventional Commits, correctly flag the breaking change with !, and call it out explicitly in the description with a concrete test plan. No issues here.

Findings

Moderate — fixed in b482e00

Problem: QwpZstdCodec.Create()'s factory() call was unguarded.
Net impact (before fix): egress zstd users with a partial plugin deployment (the plugin assembly present, but its own dependency missing) got a raw TargetInvocationException instead of IngressError, and the "fails fast pre-connect" promise didn't hold for that case.

The loader only checked that the plugin type resolves (Assembly.Load + GetType), not that it can actually be instantiated. I proved this empirically: built the real plugin the way a normal NuGet consumer would, then deleted just its own dependency (ZstdSharp.dll) to simulate a partial deployment. Assembly.Load/GetType both still succeeded (so IsAvailable wrongly reported true), and Activator.CreateInstance threw a raw TargetInvocationException.

Fix: the loader now probes actual instantiation (create-and-dispose once, cached via the existing Lazy) instead of just type resolution. Any failure there is now treated the same as "plugin not found." Re-verified after the fix: happy path unchanged; partial-deployment case now correctly reports IsAvailable=False and throws the clean IngressError(ConfigError). Build clean, 0 errors, no new trim/AOT warnings.

Moderate — still open

Problem: EnsureZstdAvailableIfRequired only runs at initial connect, not on reconnect.
Net impact: a client whose QueryOptions.compression is mutated to zstd after construction can advertise zstd on a later reconnect with the plugin absent, so the failure surfaces mid-stream instead of pre-connect.
Evidence: QwpQueryWebSocketClient.cs — the guard's only caller is ConnectInitialAsync; ReconnectAsync never calls it. BuildAcceptEncoding's zstd arm has no live IsAvailable check, unlike the auto arm two lines below, which does.

Root cause is architectural and pre-existing: QueryOptions.EnsureValid() already ran exactly once, at client-build time, before this PR; QueryOptions was already a plain mutable object retained by reference; several other fields (compression_level, username, password, token, client_id, max_batch_rows, path) were already read live on every reconnect with no re-validation. This PR's specific contribution is a new one-shot invariant riding on that old pattern without accounting for it — inconsistently, since the auto arm in the same diff does re-check live.

Suggested fix: give the zstd arm in BuildAcceptEncoding the same live IsAvailable check the auto arm already has.

Moderate — fixed in 3ee3d0c

Problem: the new plugin-absent regression tests were never run by CI.
Net impact (before fix): a future regression in the "plugin absent" degrade/fail-fast behavior this PR exists to guarantee would ship undetected — every command: test task in ci/azure-pipelines.yml targeted only net-questdb-client-tests.csproj; net-questdb-client-zstd-absent-tests compiled (via the solution-wide build) but its assertions never ran.

Fix: added a DotNetCoreCLI@2 test task targeting net-questdb-client-zstd-absent-tests.csproj. Verified: full solution build succeeds; ran the equivalent dotnet test locally — all 3 tests pass.

Minor — still open

Problem: README implies compression=auto needs the zstd package.
Net impact: cosmetic — a reader skimming past the FAQ could add an unnecessary dependency for auto mode.
Evidence: README.md, the new "(Optional) to use compression=zstd/auto ... add a NuGet reference" line reads as if both modes need the package. auto works without it (degrades to raw) — correctly explained in the FAQ entry a few lines down, but the top-of-file line doesn't reflect that.

Suggested fix: rephrase to note auto works without the package and falls back to raw.

Adjacent (not blocking, offered as a separate issue if wanted)

QueryOptions fields validated by EnsureValid() aren't re-validated if the options object is mutated after the client is built, then read live on reconnect (compression_level, username, password, token, client_id, max_batch_rows, path). Pre-existing, not introduced or worsened by this PR. Possible hardening: snapshot/freeze options at client-build time, or re-run validation on reconnect.

What I checked and found no issue in

Full solution builds clean at head across net6.0–net10.0; net6.0 correctly excludes all zstd-related code; trim/AOT annotations behave consistently with the same pattern already used elsewhere in this codebase (HttpSender.cs's JSON path). The plugin-absent test project's build output genuinely lacks the plugin and its dependency, confirming it exercises the real path. QueryOptions.compression defaults to raw, so benchmarks/examples/soak harness are unaffected regardless. A concurrency hypothesis (an uncaught Assembly.GetType exception permanently poisoning the process-wide Lazy cache) was empirically disproved — GetType succeeds even with the dependency missing; the real failure point was instantiation, addressed by the fix above. Disposal paths for _decompressor/IZstdDecompressor are correct on all paths, including the new probe-and-dispose step.

Summary

  • Verdict: approve with comments.
  • Correctness gate: passes — no admitted Critical findings.
  • Test gate: passes — no admitted Critical coverage gap.
  • Severity distribution: 0 Critical, 2 Moderate fixed (both landed on this branch), 1 Moderate open, 1 Minor open.
  • In-diff / out-of-diff-breakage: all findings in-diff; change surface confirmed well-contained by an independent whole-repo cross-context sweep.

Packs and publishes net-questdb-client-zstd from the release pipeline
(it was never built there), guards the reflection-loaded plugin
against trimming/AOT stripping, re-validates plugin availability on
query-client reconnect, adds a regression test for the create+dispose
availability probe, and clarifies the README so compression=auto is
not implied to need the plugin package.

Handle type-resolution failures as unavailable plugins.

Assembly.GetType(PluginTypeName) can throw when a plugin dependency is missing. Because this call is outside the try, compression=auto cannot fall back to raw, and compression=zstd can expose the loader exception instead of IngressError(ErrorCode.ConfigError). Include type resolution in the error-handling path and return (null, ex).

Review (level 3)

Reviewed at head 9149195 (base 9e459d03). A prior review round already ran against this PR and fixed two issues (b482e00, 3ee3d0c); commit 9149195 was pushed specifically to close the two items that round left open. This pass re-verifies those fixes and does a fresh level-3 sweep of the whole PR.

Step 1–2: PR context

Title/description follow Conventional Commits, the breaking change is flagged (refactor(qwp)!: in the commit; the PR description has an explicit "Breaking change" section — the PR title itself omits the !, but the description covers the Conventional Commits requirement either way). No issues.

Verifying the two previously-open items are actually fixed

  • EnsureZstdAvailableIfRequired on reconnect — now called at the top of ReconnectAsync (QwpQueryWebSocketClient.cs:582), reached via BackoffAndReconnectAsync from both StartQueryAsync and PullNextBatchAsync. Traced the throw path: it surfaces as IngressError(ConfigError) through the same terminal-marking machinery as any other reconnect failure — correct, and consistent with egress's (non-SF) reconnect/failover contract. Fixed correctly.
  • README wording — now correctly states auto works without the package. Fixed correctly.

Findings

Moderate — new NuGet package ships a prerelease dependency under a stable version

Problem: net-questdb-client-zstd 1.0.0 (stable) depends on net-questdb-client >= 4.0.0-beta.1 (prerelease).
Net impact: any new adopter of the plugin silently gets a prerelease main package, no opt-in.
Evidence: dotnet pack src/net-questdb-client-zstd/net-questdb-client-zstd.csproj at head 9149195 emits NU5104 and embeds <dependency id="net-questdb-client" version="4.0.0-beta.1" .../> in every TFM group of the nuspec.

This is fully reproduced and empirically confirmed to bite a real consumer, not just a build warning: installing the packed nupkg from a local feed via dotnet add package net-questdb-client-zstd (no --prerelease flag) actually pulled net-questdb-client 4.0.0-beta.1 transitively — no error, no warning surfaced to the installer.

Root cause: net-questdb-client-zstd.csproj hardcodes <PackageVersion>1.0.0</PackageVersion>, but its <ProjectReference> to the main project derives the nuspec dependency version from whatever net-questdb-client.csproj's own <PackageVersion> happens to be at pack time — currently 4.0.0-beta.1. The release pipeline (ci/azure-binaries-pipeline.yml) uses versioningScheme: 'off' for both pack steps with no CLI version override, so nothing neutralizes this automatically. There's a same-day sibling branch (build/4.0.0) that bumps the main package to a stable version, showing that half of this is on a maintainer's radar — but it was cut before this PR and doesn't touch the zstd plugin, and there's no established versioning ritual (no RELEASE.md, no prior release of this brand-new package) ensuring the plugin's own version gets bumped in lockstep. The historical tcp-auth plugin used the same ProjectReference pattern and never hit this only because its PackageVersion always happened to already be stable when set — not because of a documented process step.

This is fully attributable to this PR (net-questdb-client-zstd.csproj is a new file). Base has no equivalent package.

Suggested fix: either give net-questdb-client-zstd a matching prerelease suffix (e.g. 1.0.0-beta.1) until the main package goes stable, or pin the dependency explicitly so it's not silently derived from whatever the main csproj happens to say at pack time. Either way, add a release-process note so the two versions can't drift silently in the future.

Moderate — no regression test for the new reconnect-time zstd check

Problem: ReconnectAsync's new EnsureZstdAvailableIfRequired() call has zero test coverage.
Net impact: a future refactor could silently drop it; nothing in CI would catch the regression.
Evidence: grepped src/net-questdb-client-tests for any test that mutates QueryOptions.compression after client construction or otherwise exercises the reconnect path with a missing/broken plugin — none exists. The two new absent/broken-plugin test projects only cover the initial-connect path (QueryClient.New(...)), not a mid-stream reconnect after a post-construction mutation to compression.

The behavior is correct (verified above), and the failure mode if it regresses is a UX regression (config error surfaces later/differently, not data loss), so this doesn't meet the bar for a Critical gap — but it's exactly the kind of narrow, easy-to-silently-break path (already regressed once, per the prior review round) that's cheap to pin down with a test.

Suggested fix: a test using the existing DummyQwpServer/pooled-client end-to-end harness: connect with compression=raw, mutate options.compression = CompressionType.zstd in a scenario where the plugin is absent (reuse the net-questdb-client-zstd-absent-tests project, which already has no plugin reference), force a reconnect (mid-stream transport failure), and assert it throws IngressError(ConfigError) rather than something else.

What I checked and found no issue in

Full solution builds clean; no residual ZstdSharp references anywhere outside the new plugin project; all existing callers (benchmarks, examples, pooling layer, Docker/e2e tests) are unaffected since none construct compression=zstd/auto in a way this refactor changes. Disposal of _decompressor (now IZstdDecompressor instead of the concrete ZstdSharp.Decompressor) is correct on every path — unchanged DisposeDecompressor/Dispose/DisposeAsync logic, both types are IDisposable. The net-questdb-client-zstd-broken-tests project's assembly-name trick (impersonating the real plugin) doesn't collide with anything at build or test time. Regression-test efficacy for both new test projects verified directly by reverting the underlying fixes and confirming the tests fail exactly as expected, then confirming they pass again at head. CodeRabbit's flagged concern (Assembly.GetType sitting outside the Assembly.Load try/catch in QwpZstdCodec.TryResolveFactory) was investigated and empirically falsified for the actual shipped plugin shape — GetType doesn't throw for a missing/corrupted dependency assembly on CoreCLR net9/net10, even in boundary cases (missing base type/interface) that don't apply here; only Activator.CreateInstance fails, which is already guarded by the b482e00 probe.

Adjacent findings (not blocking)

QueryOptions fields validated by EnsureValid() at build time (compression_level, username, password, token, client_id, max_batch_rows, path) aren't re-validated if mutated afterward, then get read live on reconnect. Pre-existing (not introduced by this PR), already surfaced by the prior review round and not requested to be filed. compression itself no longer has this gap as of this PR's fix.

Summary

  • Verdict: approve with comments.
  • Correctness gate: passes — no admitted Critical findings.
  • Test gate: passes — no admitted Critical coverage gap (the open gap is Moderate).
  • Severity distribution: 0 Critical, 2 Moderate (both open), 0 Minor.
  • In-diff / out-of-diff-breakage: both findings in-diff; cross-context sweep (benchmarks, examples, pooling, existing e2e tests) found no out-of-diff breakage.
