Adds lore check so an agent can check its own work against Lore rules from one short command, and prepares the CLI for its first npm release as @mattstack/lore 0.2.0.

What changed

lore check (packages/cli/src/change.ts, args.ts, main.ts)

  • lore check checks uncommitted work, untracked files included
  • lore check <commit> checks one commit against its first parent
  • lore check --base <ref> checks the branch so far, from the merge base
  • Builds one unified diff through a temporary index and the existing parseUnifiedDiff
  • Reads untracked Lore files without a commit; a context src stays tracked-only
  • Prints author-worded text by default; --format json gives the select shape

loose key (spec/, packages/parser/)

  • loose: true in a loose folder's top .loreconfig silences untracked-given-folder
  • Spec key table, External folders, errors list, schema and three conformance examples

Package and docs

  • Renames the CLI to @mattstack/lore 0.2.0, public, no runtime dependencies
  • READMEs cover lore check, npx @mattstack/lore and an AGENTS.md line
  • CI gains a check smoke under node

Design: docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-29-lore-check-design.md. Plan: docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-29-lore-check.md.

Verification

bun run build && bunx tsc --noEmit && bun test && bun run check: 914 tests pass, 103 conformance examples. 3000 untracked files: 50 s before the temporary index, 0.8 s after.

Walkthrough

The CLI adds lore check for working-tree changes, commits, and branch comparisons against a merge base. The parser adds .loreconfig support for marking loose folders. The CLI package is renamed and configured for public npm publication.

Changes: Lore check and distribution

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 9da3b

The standalone release may fail in ES-module projects and should be addressed before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9da3b

The new command broadens local Git processing and rule input while retaining existing file-read and matcher controls. No concrete security regression was established. Trust in untracked rules, unusual Git environments, and abrupt interruption remain bounded uncertainties.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The assessed exposure is a locally invoked CLI processing repository content and explicitly selected rule folders under the invoking user's authority. Rule prose can influence a downstream agent consuming its output, but that agent's permissions, tenant scope, and execution environment are not established by the available evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Working-tree check newly accepts eligible untracked Lore as rule content and emits selected prose in author-facing output. This is an intentional input-to-instruction path, not evidence of a privileged bypass. The tracked-only context-read boundary remains separate, but the output does not independently establish that untracked rule authors are trusted by a consuming agent.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Inherited Git variables other than GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE can still influence discovery before the scratch-index override is applied. Environment inheritance predates this PR, and later index writes explicitly target scratch state. The remaining issue is an unspecified repository-authority contract, not an established attacker-controlled cross-repository write.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For workflows where agents consume rules from potentially untrusted workspaces, expose tracked versus untracked rule provenance and document that rule text must not grant additional tool or credential authority. Separately, define whether check intentionally honors ambient Git index and object-store redirection variables.

Document the no-HEAD fallback.

When lore check runs in a repository with no commits, it compares the working tree with the empty tree, not HEAD. The implementation and tests confirm this behavior. The current text is inaccurate for this supported repository state. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Proposed wording
- - `lore check` reads uncommitted work: staged changes, unstaged changes, and untracked files that git does not ignore, all against `HEAD`.

Rename the standalone bundle to lore.cjs.

The README tells users to download lore.js into their current directory and run it with node lore.js check. If that directory is inside a project whose nearest package.json has "type": "module", Node loads lore.js as an ES module. The bundle is CommonJS and calls require("node:fs"), require("node:path"), and similar built-ins at top level, so the command fails with ReferenceError: require is not defined. The npm bin install is not affected because packages/cli/package.json has no type field.

The fix must change both output paths in build.mjs. The outfile option does not write anything because write: false. The file on disk comes from the final writeFileSync call. Update the following together:

packages/cli/scripts/build.mjs:

- outfile: join(root, "dist/lore.js"),

Not renaming for 0.2.0. lore.js is the release asset name since cli-v0.1.1, and a team pack already pins and vendors it by that name. The npm tarball's package.json has no "type": "module", so node loads the bundle as CommonJS there. The rename only matters when someone copies the file under a "type": "module" package.json. That's worth revisiting with a deliberate asset rename, not mid-release.

@m4ttheweric Understood. Keeping lore.js for 0.2.0 preserves compatibility with the team pack that pins the asset name. I overstated the rename as a quick fix.

The npm install is unaffected. The standalone failure under a "type": "module" package remains a known limitation, not a completed fix.

Would you like a follow-up GitHub issue for a deliberate asset-name migration?
