A server with no workspaces showed an empty rail and a bare "No tab selected", with no visible way to start. Every new server and every new user lands there. It now shows a start screen built from the empty pin's launcher.

What changed

Start screen (Sources/Flock/Views/StartScreenView.swift)

  • "No workspaces yet", with "on " only off the default server
  • The empty pin's launcher bar: Return opens a shell, ⌘1 and on launch harnesses
  • A choice opens a workspace in the shown folder and runs in its first pane (SessionViewModel.startWorkspace(in:))
  • A folder line ("in ~") opens the folder picker

Folder (StartingFolderStore.startScreenFolder)

  • A folder picked on the screen wins for the rest of the session
  • Otherwise the New Workspace setting: Home or Custom name their folder; Current Pane and Main Checkout, with no pane to follow, use the last pick, else ~

Wiring

  • The empty rail draws a "+ New Workspace" row, the one control a resting rail draws
  • ⌘T, ⌘N, the Launch menu and the View digits reach the start screen

Verification

Checked in Flock Dev on a new server with no workspaces. New StartScreenTests (7) and StartScreenRenderTests (dark and light, default and named server); FlockCoreTests 2452/2452 and FlockChromeRender 539/539 green, Scripts/checks.sh clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a start screen for sessions without workspaces, including launcher choices and the configured starting folder.
    • Added support for selecting and remembering the folder used when creating a new workspace.
    • Added a New Workspace option to the empty workspace rail.
    • Launcher actions, keyboard shortcuts, New Tab, and New Workspace now open in the selected starting folder.
    • Added support for displaying the connected server name on the start screen.

Note

Add a start screen for servers with no workspaces

  • When the selected server has no workspaces and no empty pin, the main window now shows StartScreenView instead of the tab strip and pane canvas, with a launcher bar, folder picker, and optional server caption (MainWindow.swift).
  • Launch menu slots, digit shortcuts, New Tab, New Workspace, and the empty rail's New Workspace row all route through the start-screen flow, creating the first workspace in the selected folder (FlockApp.swift, WorkspaceRail.swift).
  • Shell entries create a workspace directly; other harnesses wait for the new pane's prompt, then launch through the regular pane launcher (StartScreenView.swift).
  • Folder selection persists across sessions via StartingFolderStore.pickStartScreenFolder, with precedence: current-session pick, home/custom workspace settings, persisted pick, then home as fallback (StartingFolder.swift).
  • Adds render tests and core tests covering start-screen state, folder precedence, persistence, and workspace-create commands.
  • Behavioral Change: the empty-rail New Workspace row and command menu actions on an empty server now use the start-screen folder flow instead of calling createWorkspace directly; check LauncherSlots.launch and WorkspaceRail.newWorkspaceRow if pin and focused-pane launch routing regresses.

📝 Walkthrough

The app now displays a start screen when the session has no workspaces. The screen resolves and displays a starting folder, and its launch actions create a workspace in that folder. Window commands and the workspace rail also route applicable actions through the configured folder.

Changes: Start screen and workspace launch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Starting-folder and session behavior
Sources/FlockCore/Environment/StartingFolder.swift, Sources/FlockCore/ViewModels/SessionViewModel.swift, Tests/FlockCoreTests/StartScreenTests.swift
The folder store resolves picks using session and workspace settings, persists selected paths, and falls back to the home folder when needed. The session model reports start-screen visibility and creates a focused workspace with the supplied folder as cwd. Tests cover folder resolution, visibility, and workspace creation.
Start-screen view and entry launch
Sources/Flock/Views/StartScreenView.swift, Tests/FlockChromeRender/StartScreenRenderTests.swift
The start screen displays launcher entries and a selectable folder. Launch actions create a workspace in that folder and launch non-shell entries after the first pane prompt. Render tests cover themes, server labels, layout, rail content, and path shortening.
Window, launcher, and rail integration
Sources/Flock/FlockApp.swift, Sources/Flock/Views/MainWindow.swift, Sources/Flock/Views/PaneLauncherOverlay.swift, Sources/Flock/Views/WorkspaceRail.swift
The window selects the start screen when applicable. Launch commands, digit-key dispatch, New Tab, New Workspace, and the rail’s New Workspace control use the resolved start-screen folder when applicable.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 111c0

Rapid repeated launch actions can open duplicate workspaces and shells. This is a bounded issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 111c0

The new flow keeps launches tied to the originating server and newly created pane. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns interrupted launches and server-side handling of selected folders.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly reachable action is user-initiated workspace creation and optional command execution on the originating local server. The inspected flow adds no new credential source or privileged execution mechanism; effective filesystem authority remains dependent on the existing server process and its uninspected enforcement.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Pane targeting and prompt checks match the pre-existing empty-pin launch sequence. This is counterevidence to a new focus-based command-redirection path, but it does not establish server-side authorization or atomicity between the prompt query and input delivery.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Server switching replaces the session but does not visibly cancel caller-created launch Tasks. A pending launch can therefore retain its old client rather than move to the newly selected server. This lifecycle pattern already exists in empty-pin launching; the comparison does not establish a newly expanded security boundary or authority.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider a shared session-owned launch coordinator that fences command delivery after shutdown and makes repeated launch requests explicit. Apply it to both existing empty-pin launching and the new start-screen flow rather than treating lifecycle fencing as unique to this PR.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a new empty-server start-screen workflow spanning UI, persisted folder selection, workspace creation, and launcher/keyboard routing. Its customer-facing scope and server-state effects are broader than a small self-contained change.

Serialize start-screen workspace creation until the model updates.

create returns after the workspace.create response, but model updates separately. The start screen can remain visible after the response. A second action can therefore issue another workspace.create.

A defer around create releases the guard too early. Keep the guard until update(model:connection:) reports a workspace. Clear it immediately when the request fails.
