rt's chat.autoSignIn signs a new Claude session in from a startup hook, after Flock has already read the pane as signed out, so the chat button lagged until something made it ask again. Flock now follows that sign-in for panes whose repo has it on.

What changed

Core (Sources/FlockCore/Chat/ChatAutoSignIn.swift)

  • Reads rt settings get chat.autoSignIn --repo <folder> --json; anything but true is off
  • Follows only an agent that appears while Flock watches the pane (nil to claude)

Store and view

  • ChatStore.followAutoSignIn asks for status every second for up to 30 seconds, stopping once signed in
  • Those asks never toast or set the Retry banner, and a pane drawn twice is followed once
  • PaneCellView starts it from onChange(of: pane.agent), with the agent's foreground folder
  • The setting read and the pause are injected, so the tests spawn nothing

Verification

4 new ChatAutoSignInTests and 5 new ChatStoreTests (signs in, gives up after its window, setting off, quiet failures, already signed in); ChatStoreTests 17/17 green and Scripts/checks.sh clean.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added automatic Claude sign-in when a Claude chat pane becomes active.
    • Automatically checks sign-in status and retries for up to 30 seconds when needed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Prevented temporary automatic sign-in failures from showing unnecessary error messages or notifications.
    • Preserved successful sign-in status updates while retrying.

When rt's chat.autoSignIn is on for a new Claude agent's folder, its
startup hook signs it in after the pane's first status read. The pane now
asks again every second for up to 30 seconds, quietly, until it is signed
in, so the chat button catches up without a click.

📝 Walkthrough

The change detects when a Claude agent appears and follows eligible panes with quiet chat status retries when auto sign-in is enabled.

Changes: Auto-sign-in follow-up

Layer / File(s) Summary
Setting detection and agent transition
Sources/FlockCore/Chat/ChatAutoSignIn.swift, Sources/Flock/Chat/ChatToolLocator.swift, Tests/FlockCoreTests/ChatAutoSignInTests.swift
ChatAutoSignIn builds the settings command, validates its result, and detects a newly appearing Claude agent. ChatToolLocator executes the command. Tests cover setting validation and agent transitions.
Pane trigger and quiet retries
Sources/Flock/Views/PaneCellView.swift, Sources/Flock/Chat/ChatStore.swift, Tests/FlockChromeRender/ChatStoreTests.swift
PaneCellView starts follow-up when an agent transition qualifies. ChatStore checks whether auto sign-in is enabled and retries status checks up to the configured limit. Quiet failures do not update status errors or show a toast. Tests cover retry behavior and failure handling.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b621e

Automatic sign-in follow-up can miss a new or replacement Claude agent, while slow status requests can keep it running longer than intended. Resolve these lifecycle gaps before merging unless the limited cases and manual-refresh workaround are explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b621e

The new workflow checks chat status rather than performing sign-in or changing permissions. Repository settings and retry limits constrain its activity. Background checks are not explicitly cancelled when a pane disappears, and session replacement can affect status freshness. Downstream authentication behavior was not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new exposure is automatic local helper execution and cached-status updates for eligible observed panes. Folder metadata selects the repository setting being read, while the pane identifier selects subsequent status queries. The inspected path does not establish new tenant, environment, credential, or backend authorization scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The pane folder is passed as one argument following --repo, not interpolated into a shell command. Executable selection comes from the existing tool-path resolver, independently of that folder argument. This establishes argument separation in Flock, but not the downstream command's option parsing or authorization semantics.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Request generations prevent older requests from overwriting newer requests, but do not bind results to an agent session. Agent changes can occur within a pane record, and the follow task is neither retained nor cancelled on disappearance. Replacement or overlap with explicit sign-in/out can therefore leave local status or diagnostics stale. No corresponding backend authority change is established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If follow-up must remain scoped to the initiating session, give it explicit lifecycle ownership and cancellation, and validate that ownership after suspended requests before updating shared status. This would strengthen cleanup and identity consistency; it is not a verified authentication vulnerability.

Replay pending auto-sign-in when chat becomes available.

If pane.agent changes from nil to "claude" while chat is unavailable, followAutoSignIn returns and discards the transition. Availability then performs only one status request. If sign-in completes later, automatic follow-up stops.

Retain the pending transition and start followAutoSignIn when isAvailable becomes true. User-triggered refreshes remain a workaround, but they do not replace the automatic follow-up.

Skipping: availability flips once, at launch, and the existing availability-keyed refresh reads every pane's status at that moment.

@m4ttheweric Thanks for clarifying the launch behavior. I won’t press this change. The availability-keyed refresh reads each pane’s status once; delayed sign-in after that refresh remains the edge case behind this finding.
