Feature Pull Request

This repository enforces changelog, release, and label automation for all PRs and issues.
See the organisation-wide Automation Governance & Release Strategy for contributor rules.

Linked issues

Part of Linear LSA-191 (Set up Lefthook validation for the theme and plugin). This PR covers the plugin's first two checks only. The theme's matching PR is lightspeedwp/ls-theme#128. The remaining validation categories in LSA-191 are still open, so this PR does not use a closing keyword. There is no GitHub issue for LSA-191 in this repository.

Summary

Git hooks are not set up in this repo. build/ is committed and is what PHP loads, so a source change can be committed with stale built output, and PHP can reach a PR with syntax or coding-standard errors. Lefthook now runs a pre-commit hook with two jobs. It is installed as an npm devDependency, so npm install sets the hook up for every contributor.

The hook

  • lefthook.yml defines one pre-commit hook. Its jobs run in order (piped) and are skipped during merges and rebases.
  • Each job runs only when staged files match. A commit with no PHP and nothing in src/ skips both.
  • A failing job blocks the commit and prints a message saying how to fix it.

Job 1: php-check

  • Runs when staged files match *.php (not build/ or vendor/). It runs php -l on each staged file, then vendor/bin/phpcs on the staged files. Errors block the commit; warnings do not.
  • It stops with a clear message if php is not on the PATH or phpcs is not installed.

Job 2: build

  • Runs when staged files match src/** or webpack.config.cjs. It runs npm run build, then stages build/, so source and built output are committed together.
  • webpack.config.cjs sets clean: true, so build/ is entirely generated and the whole folder is staged, including files the build no longer produces. A rebuild with no source change gives no difference from the committed build/.
  • Before building it stops the commit, and lists the files, when any file under src/ (or webpack.config.cjs) has unstaged changes, or when there are untracked files under src/. npm run build compiles the whole working tree, so otherwise build/ could be staged with output from a file that is not in the commit.
  • It also stops git commit <file> (and --only). Git runs hooks for those against a temporary index, so the staged build/ would be committed and then dropped from the real index, leaving a staged revert. Plain git commit, -a, --include and --amend work.
  • A file that is only partly staged is fine: Lefthook hides its unstaged part during the hook.

PHP ruleset (phpcs.xml.dist)

  • Checks PHP files only and skips vendor/, node_modules/ and build/ (generated copies of src/ files).
  • The existing code had 119 errors and 46 warnings, so the ruleset relaxes what blocks a commit:
    • 13 auto-fixable formatting sniffs are switched off (array spacing, short array syntax, trailing whitespace, function call layout and similar).
    • 8 findings that need a human decision are warnings (translators comments, Yoda conditions, global variable overrides and similar).
    • Security sniffs stay on as errors. Two false positives are excluded for one file each: src/blocks/search-filter/render.php echoes get_block_wrapper_attributes() and wp_interactivity_data_wp_context(), which return escaped markup; inc/class-permalinks.php sanitises the input on the next line, and its existing phpcs:ignore comment names the wrong sniff (ValidatedInput instead of ValidatedSanitizedInput), so it never worked.
  • Result: 0 errors and 70 warnings across the repo. ignore_warnings_on_exit is set, so warnings never fail a run.

Composer scripts

  • phpcs and phpcbf now use the ruleset instead of --standard=WordPress .. The old command also read JavaScript and CSS, including the 154 KB minified Swiper bundle in assets/, and ran out of memory (128 MB limit). The whole repo now checks in about 1.5 seconds. This is also the command the plugin's code-quality.yml workflow runs.

Supporting changes

  • package.json / package-lock.json: lefthook added as a devDependency. The lockfile also drops 38 "peer": true flags that npm rewrote; no package versions changed other than the new lefthook packages.
  • .gitignore: ignores lefthook-local.yml and .lefthook-local.yml for personal overrides.
  • .github/reports/lefthook-setup.md: install, everyday commands, how to bypass, known limits and verification results.

Investigated, not changed

  • ESLint, Stylelint and JSON lint. ESLint reports 305 errors in 16 of 26 JS files (194 formatting), and Stylelint reports 39 errors in the SCSS plus 395 in compiled style.css copies committed next to their .scss source. lint:json does not work: --ext is not an option of wp-scripts lint-md-docs, and || true hides the error. These need their own cleanup, so they are not part of the hook.
  • Existing phpcs findings. Not autofixed: running phpcbf would change 14 PHP files and mix a formatting cleanup into this PR. The ruleset comments say which sniffs to re-enable after a separate phpcbf pass.
  • CI. The plugin's workflows only run for main, so this PR to develop gets no CI checks. Not changed here.
  • The wrong phpcs:ignore in class-permalinks.php. Worked around in the ruleset. Fixing the comment would be a source change.

Scope and exclusions

  • Does not add the other checks listed in LSA-191: branch-name and changelog validation, JS (ESLint/Prettier) or Sass linting, PHPStan and a pre-push hook.
  • Does not change any PHP, JS, SCSS, block or build/ file.
  • Review size: 8 files changed. package-lock.json (184 lines added, 42 removed) is excluded from the count, leaving 7 reviewable files and 294 added lines (114 of them the setup report). This is within the preferred budget of about 15 files / 400 lines.

Screenshots / video

None. There is no visible or UI change; the only output is terminal messages from the hook.

Dependency notes

npm audit reports 122 findings (4 low, 30 moderate, 85 high, 3 critical) on this branch and on develop: the same counts, and none involve lefthook. They come from @wordpress/scripts.

Known limits

  • The hook needs php, npm and node on the PATH. A Git client that does not load the shell environment can block commits with php was not found on the PATH or npm was not found on the PATH. Commit from a terminal, or use git commit --no-verify for that commit. With a minimal PATH that excludes /opt/homebrew/bin and /usr/local/bin this reproduces; with them included the hook runs.
  • Deleting a source file on its own does not trigger the build job, so its built output is not removed automatically.
  • Some src/**/style.css and .css.map files are committed next to their .scss. The guard counts them as source, so they have to be staged with the .scss file.
  • Do not edit files in build/ by hand: the next hook run overwrites them.

Test plan

  • npm run plugin:validate, schema:validate and security:scan pass (the security scan reports the same 2 potential PHP issues as before; this PR changes no PHP)
  • node plugin-utils.mjs scan-placeholders finds no unreplaced placeholders
  • composer run phpcs exits 0 on the whole repo (0 errors, 70 warnings, about 1.5 seconds). Before this PR it ran out of memory.
  • composer run phplint passes
  • npm run build rebuilds with no difference in build/
  • npm ci --dry-run succeeds with the updated lockfile
  • npx lefthook validate passes and npx lefthook check-install exits 0
  • npm audit compared with develop (see Dependency notes)
  • Fresh clone of this branch: npm ci installs the pre-commit hook automatically and check-install exits 0
  • On develop (no lefthook.yml) the installed hook prints that no config was found and exits 0, so it does not block commits there
  • Temporary dummy files in the real repo, run through .git/hooks/pre-commit (removed afterwards, nothing committed): valid PHP passes; PHP with errors is blocked; a PHP syntax error is blocked; a new imported module builds and stages build/; a staged source file plus an untracked source file is blocked; a staged source file plus an unstaged one is blocked; an unrelated file skips both jobs
  • 24 real git commit scenarios in a scratch worktree with its own node_modules: valid and blocked PHP, a JS change (the commit holds the source file and its own build output only), src/ render.php edit (both jobs run), PHP and JS together, -a, --include, --amend, git commit <file> blocked, JS syntax error blocked with build/ left intact, a hand edit in build/ overwritten, and a minimal PATH blocked with a clear message
  • CodeRabbit review read and responded to (review pending)
  • CI: not applicable until the workflows run for develop; they currently run for main only

Changelog

meta:needs-changelog applies: contributors get a new commit-time check, a new ruleset and a fixed Composer script. The CHANGELOG.md entry is already in the branch under [Unreleased]. Existing entries in this plugin's changelog do not link PRs, so none is added.

Added

  • A Lefthook pre-commit hook with a php-check job (php -l and PHP_CodeSniffer on staged PHP) and a build job (npm run build and staging build/ when src/ changes). It blocks the commit when src/ has unstaged or untracked files or when git commit <file> is used with source files. npm install installs the hook. (Part of LSA-191)
  • phpcs.xml.dist, a PHP-only WordPress Coding Standards ruleset. (Part of LSA-191)
  • .github/reports/lefthook-setup.md with install, usage and verification notes. (Part of LSA-191)

Changed

  • The phpcs and phpcbf Composer scripts use phpcs.xml.dist. (Part of LSA-191)
  • .gitignore ignores lefthook-local.yml and .lefthook-local.yml. (Part of LSA-191)

Fixed

  • composer run phpcs no longer runs out of memory: it checks PHP files only instead of also reading JavaScript and CSS. (Part of LSA-191)

Removed

Walkthrough

This change adds a PHP_CodeSniffer ruleset and Lefthook pre-commit jobs. The jobs check staged PHP files and build and stage generated files for source or webpack changes. Documentation, local override ignores, suppressions, and changelog entries are also added.

Changes

Plugin pre-commit checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
PHP coding-standard configuration
phpcs.xml.dist, composer.json, build/blocks/search-filter/render.php, src/blocks/search-filter/render.php, inc/class-permalinks.php
The ruleset scans PHP files, excludes generated and dependency directories, configures WordPress checks, and separates warnings from security errors. Composer scripts use the default ruleset discovery. Existing PHPCS suppressions document handled output and sanitization cases.
Pre-commit validation and build staging
lefthook.yml, package.json, .gitignore, .github/reports/lefthook-setup.md, CHANGELOG.md
Lefthook runs staged PHP checks and guarded build generation. The package adds Lefthook, .gitignore excludes local override files, and the documentation and changelog describe setup, guards, bypasses, verification, and removal.

The hook can skip rebuilding when a commit only deletes source files, which can leave outdated generated files in build/. This is a bounded developer-workflow inconsistency, not a runtime failure. Consider fixing it before or shortly after merge.

…ne ignores (LSA-191)

Security sniffs
- Remove the file-wide exclusions for search-filter/render.php and class-permalinks.php
- Suppress the two known false positives inline, with a reason, on those statements only
- A new violation elsewhere in those files is now blocked by the PHP check
- Correct the sniff name in class-permalinks.php to ValidatedSanitizedInput
- Rebuild build/ so its copy of render.php matches the source

Docs
- Remove the incorrect known limit that deleting a source file skips the build job
- Document that deletions trigger the build and stage the removal of built output
- Describe the inline suppressions in the setup report
- Add verification rows for the strictness and deletion cases
- Update the CHANGELOG entries

Verification
- New unescaped output and new unsanitised input in those files are blocked
- A harmless edit to those files passes
- Deleting an imported file blocks the commit, as the build fails
- Deleting a whole block commits the removal of its files from build/
- Deleting an unused file passes, with the commit holding only the deletion
- phpcs on the whole repo reports 0 errors

Run the build job for deletion-only commits.

Lefthook filters deleted paths out of the file list before it applies glob. A commit that only deletes files under src/ can skip the build job. With clean: true, stale output for the deleted source can then stay in build/. The setup doc (lines 51 and 107) says deletions trigger the job. The glob filter may contradict this claim.

Run the job without glob. Exit early when the staged diff has no changes under src or webpack.config.cjs. This keeps behavior for other commits the same.

Proposed change

@krugazul yes, those two lines output markup that WordPress already escapes, so PHPCS flags them by mistake. I’ve marked just those two lines with a short ignore and a reason, the same way the taxonomy-filter block already does, so the rest of the file is still checked. 🙂
