This code applies to every kibotu repository that does not define its own, and to the issues, pull
requests, discussions, and commit messages in it. It applies to everyone who takes part: users,
contributors, and maintainers.
The goal is simple. Good code comes out of a community where people are comfortable enough to ask a naive question, to disagree in public, and to be wrong.
- Be friendly and patient. Everyone was new once.
- Be welcoming. We want contributors from every background and identity. This includes, but is not limited to, any age, body size, culture, disability, education, ethnicity, family status, gender identity and expression, immigration status, language, mental and physical ability, nationality, neurotype, physical appearance, political belief, profession, race, region, religion, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and level of technical skill.
- Be considerate. Other people depend on your work, and you depend on theirs. This is a world-wide community, so the person you write to may not read in their first language.
- Be respectful. Disagreement happens. It is not an excuse for bad manners. Frustration is not an excuse for a personal attack.
- Choose your words with care. Criticize the code, not the person who wrote it.
- Try to understand the disagreement. A view you cannot follow is not automatically a wrong view. Ask. Then fix the problem instead of the blame.
Harassment includes, but is not limited to:
- Offensive remarks about any characteristic listed above.
- Unwelcome remarks about a person's life choices, such as food, health, parenting, drugs, or employment.
- Deliberate misgendering, deadnaming, or continued use of the wrong pronoun. Use the name and the pronouns a person gives you.
- Physical contact, or simulated physical contact such as
*hug*, without consent or after a request to stop. - Threats of violence, physical or psychological.
- Incitement of violence, self-harm, or suicide.
- Deliberate intimidation.
- Stalking, or following a person between channels.
- Photography, recording, or activity logs kept in order to harass.
- Sustained disruption of a discussion.
- Unwelcome sexual attention, including off-topic sexual images.
- Repeated requests for a level of intimacy the other person did not offer.
- Continued one-on-one contact after a request to stop.
- Disclosure of any part of a person's identity without consent. The one exception is disclosure that protects other people from deliberate abuse.
- Publication of private communication that is not itself harassment.
We put the safety of marginalized people before the comfort of privileged people. We do not act on complaints about:
- 'Reverse' -isms, such as 'reverse racism', 'reverse sexism', or 'cisphobia'.
- A clear statement of a boundary, such as "leave me alone" or "I will not discuss this with you".
- A refusal to explain or to debate a concept of social justice.
- A tone you find uncongenial.
- Criticism of racist, sexist, cissexist, or otherwise oppressive behavior or assumptions.
We will get this wrong sometimes. When you make a mistake, take responsibility for it. When you cause harm, listen first, then correct the wrong. That is the whole procedure. A good apology costs less than a lost contributor.
Send a report to jan.rabe@kibotu.net. Include:
- How to reach you.
- The names, handles, or pseudonyms of the people involved, and of any witnesses.
- What happened, and whether it continues.
- A link to the public record, if one exists.
- Anything else that helps.
You get a personal reply. We review the incident, ask any further question, and then decide on a response. We handle every report with discretion, and we respect a request for confidentiality.
That mailbox belongs to the maintainer. To report the maintainer, or to escalate a report you believe we handled badly, use GitHub's abuse report instead.
The response fits the behavior. It ranges from a private warning, through a temporary block, to a
permanent ban from every kibotu repository. We also remove content that breaks this code, and we
lock threads that no longer help anyone.
This code is adapted from the Spotify FOSS Code of Conduct, which builds on the Contributor Covenant, the Citizen Code of Conduct, the Python diversity statement, and the Geek Feminism anti-harassment policy.
