My name is James. I'm CTO for Veterinary at Nordhealth, where I build software that helps both animals and humans.
As well as building teams and technology, I love writing.
My first book ended up in the Books2 dataset that helped train the early GPT and Claude models, so a few of my sentences have probably been read back to you by a chatbot at some point.
| Book | What it's about |
|---|---|
| Become an Effective Software Engineering Manager | Making the leap from engineer to manager, and thriving in your first year leading a team. |
| Effective Remote Work | Doing your best work when your team is spread across the world: the practices and culture that make distributed teams succeed. |
| Become A Great Engineering Leader | The journey beyond managing a team, to leading well as a Director or VP. |
I write The Engineering Manager on Substack, helping people become better tech leads and managers.
