Welcome to the VU Bioinformatics Group!
We aim to understand biological processes across different levels of molecular and cellular organisation. By combining advanced computational analysis with state-of-the-art modelling techniques, we investigate protein structure, complex biological datasets and networks to uncover the mechanisms that shape health and disease.
Our research focuses on three broad areas.
We develop computational approaches to study:
- Protein structure and function
- Protein–protein interactions
- Molecular properties and interactions
We develop and apply methods for:
- Sequence analysis and alignment
- Single-cell protein quantification technologies
- FAIR data stewardship
- Computational and statistical methods development
We are embedded in the Department of Computer Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

We contribute to the joint-degree (with Universiteit van Amsterdam) Master's programme in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology.
The programme is organised jointly by:
- The Bioinformatics Group at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
- The Systems Biology Lab at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
- The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (Biosystems Data Analysis) at the University of Amsterdam
The programme combines bioinformatics, systems biology, computer science, statistics, and molecular biology to prepare students for research at the interface of biology and computation.
