Owner

Ships the canonical label set and the classifier that labels newly-filed issues.

Additive only — never removes a label, never overrides a human's classification, silent when unsure, never fails an issue.

Also adds this repo's two new workflows to .github/workflows/actions.lock as []. That lock is keyed by workflow path and refuses any workflow it does not list — a startup_failure, which produces no check run and is therefore silent. gh actions-lock cannot add these: it records action versions, and both workflows deliberately use none.

See docs/LABELS.adoc in hyperpolymath/.git-private-farm.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added automated issue classification and label suggestions based on issue titles and keywords.
    • Added workflows to apply labels to new, reopened, or manually selected issues.
    • Added a canonical set of issue labels, including types, areas, priorities, statuses, metadata, and scope.
  • Chores

    • Added scheduled label maintenance to create missing labels and update permitted label details.

Walkthrough

Adds generated label definitions and classifier rules. Adds a jq classifier for issue titles. Adds workflows for issue triage and canonical label synchronisation.

Changes

Label automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Label taxonomy and classification rules
.github/label-classifier.json, .github/labels.json
Defines 40 labels, frozen labels, title and bracket rules, keyword signals, tier limits, allowed types, and precedence values.
jq issue classifier
.github/scripts/classify-issue.jq
Normalises titles, applies rules and keyword signals, enforces tier limits, excludes existing labels, and emits canonical labels.
Issue triage workflow
.github/workflows/label-triage.yml
Classifies opened, reopened, and manually selected issues. It applies valid labels without replacing existing labels.
Canonical label synchronisation
.github/workflows/labels.yml
Creates missing labels, updates non-frozen label drift, skips existing frozen labels, and reports mutation results.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 41702

The PR adds automated label synchronization and issue triage, but concurrent synchronization can fail and stale label data can result in conflicting issue-type labels. It is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up on these bounded workflow risks.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Refresh issue labels immediately before the mutation.

Lines 82-83 capture a stale label snapshot. If a maintainer adds enhancement after this read to an issue titled fix: ..., line 114 can still add bug. The issue then has two type labels, despite the additive-only and no-human-override contract.

Read the labels again and rerun the classifier immediately before gh issue edit. A workflow concurrency group can also serialise automatic runs, but it cannot protect manual label changes.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Serialise label synchronisation runs.

Concurrent push, schedule, or manual runs can read the same missing label. One run then creates it, while the other run fails its duplicate create. Line 101 converts that expected race into a failed workflow.
