Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

123-123: Add the separate leading-BOM check.

PATTERNS includes \x{feff}, but this scan still has no byte-level check for EF BB BF at offset 0. A file whose only invisible character is a leading UTF-8 BOM can pass the gate. Scan the same file set, merge the matches, and de-duplicate paths before calculating FINDINGS.

134-134: LGTM!

Walkthrough

The workflow gate now detects invisible characters with Unicode codepoint escapes, includes additional control characters and the word joiner, and scans binary files as text.

The PATTERNS regex now uses Unicode codepoint escapes and includes additional control characters and the word joiner. The grep scan now uses -a for binary files.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to afebd

The gate now detects several invisible characters but can still miss files containing only a leading UTF-8 BOM. Merge should wait for that check to be added or for the owner to explicitly accept the bounded detection gap.

Add the separate leading-BOM check.

grep -aPrl can miss a file that contains only a leading UTF-8 BOM. Add a byte-level EF BB BF check at offset 0 for the same file set. De-duplicate results before calculating FINDINGS.

Pull Request Overview

This PR successfully updates the invisible-character gate to use correct Unicode codepoint syntax and broadens the character set to include C0 control characters. However, for the PCRE engine to correctly interpret these codepoints in UTF-8 files, the (*UTF8) prefix should be added to the pattern string. Additionally, the shell command for file traversal can be optimized for better performance in large repositories. The primary concern is the absence of automated test cases or fixture files; given that this gate previously failed silently for an extended period, including test files with targeted characters is essential to prevent future regressions.

About this PR

  • The PR lacks automated regression tests or fixture files containing the targeted invisible characters. Since the previous implementation 'never matched anything' for a long period without being noticed, adding a test case to the repository would prevent future regressions.

Test suggestions

  • Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (NBSP, U+00A0) in a source file.
  • Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (BOM, U+FEFF) at the start of a file.
  • Verify detection of C0 control characters like Backspace (U+0008).
  • Verify that a file containing a NUL byte is scanned and reported if other invisible characters are present (using grep -a).
Prompt proposal for missing tests
Consider implementing these tests if applicable:
1. Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (NBSP, U+00A0) in a source file.
2. Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (BOM, U+FEFF) at the start of a file.
3. Verify detection of C0 control characters like Backspace (U+0008).
4. Verify that a file containing a NUL byte is scanned and reported if other invisible characters are present (using grep -a).

🟡 MEDIUM RISK

The use of Unicode code point escapes (\x{...}) in PCRE requires UTF-8 mode to correctly match multi-byte characters and avoid false positives. Prepend (*UTF8) to the patterns string.

⚪ LOW RISK

Suggestion: The -r flag is redundant when find is already providing specific file paths. Additionally, using {} + instead of {} \; is more efficient for large repositories as it batches file paths into fewer grep invocations.

Suggested change
-exec grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS" {} \; > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt 2>/dev/null
-exec grep -aPl "$PATTERNS" {} + > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt 2>/dev/null
