Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved detection of invisible characters, including null bytes and additional ASCII control characters.
    • Binary files are now scanned more reliably for these characters.

Walkthrough

The workflow updates its invisible-character pattern to use Unicode code-point escapes, adds more control characters, and scans binary files as text.

Changes

Invisible-character gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gate pattern and file scan
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The pattern now matches Unicode code points, null bytes, and additional ASCII control characters. The grep scan uses -a to read binary files as text.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 27ede

The workflow improves invisible-character detection, but a leading UTF-8 BOM may still evade the scan. This is a bounded correctness gap that is mergeable with explicit owner awareness or follow-up.

Poem

A rabbit checks the hidden signs,
Through bytes and code points in the lines.
The gate now sees what once stayed still,
In text and binary files at will.
Carrots nod beside the build.

Pull Request Overview

This PR fixes the invisible-character CI gate which was previously ineffective due to incorrect regex escape syntax for grep -P. It correctly implements Unicode codepoint escapes and expands the gate to include C0 control characters and Word Joiners.

Codacy analysis indicates the changes are up to standards with no new quality issues. However, the CI workflow can be further optimized for performance by batching file processing in the find command and improving diagnostic visibility by removing stderr redirection.

Test suggestions

  • Found recommended test scenario: Detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) via codepoint escape
  • Found recommended test scenario: Detection of Zero-Width Space (U+200B) via codepoint escape
  • Found recommended test scenario: Detection of C0 control character like Backspace (\x08)
  • Found recommended test scenario: Scanning of files containing null bytes (\x00) using grep -a
  • Found recommended test scenario: Detection of BiDi overrides and Word Joiner characters

🟡 MEDIUM RISK

Suggestion: Optimize the search by using -exec ... {} + and removing the redundant -r flag. Also, remove the stderr redirection to ensure that any diagnostic errors from grep are visible in the logs.

-exec grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS" {} \; > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt 2>/dev/null
-exec grep -aPl "$PATTERNS" {} + > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt
