A test pays for every step before the screen it checks, on every run and rerun. The skill now tells a coding agent to start near that screen (sign in through the app's API in the setup, open the screen by path, seed data through the API, Device.OpenLinkAsync on a device) and to grow a multi-screen test one screen at a time. A new "Workflow: fixing a failed test" section says to fix from the exception and the trace page, every line the evidence covers, and to go straight to a screen over MCP instead of walking the flow again. Ports upstream 74c2b73 and c5e3248 into SKILL.md and writing-tests.md, debugging.md, mcp.md.

The port differs where it has no counterpart: no saved session or test.extend, so the setup uses an HttpClient and Browser.SetCookiesAsync; and no ❯ at, ❯ on screen or ❯ trace lines, so the text points to the exception Details and the trace page's ## Screen at failure (which has Closest to what the locator asked for and screen-at-failure.txt). Recorded in COMPATIBILITY.md. docs/ holds only generated API docs, so upstream's core-concepts.mdx and coding-agents.mdx have no counterpart.

Closes #551

📝 Walkthrough

The .NET skill documentation now covers screen-focused test setup, browser and device navigation, API-based data preparation, trace-based failure diagnosis, MCP limitations, and iterative test-class reruns.

Changes: Test authoring and failure diagnosis

Layer / File(s) Summary
Start tests near the target screen
skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md, skills/e2e-dotnet/references/writing-tests.md
The guidance adds API authentication and data setup, direct browser or device navigation, cleanup, a NUnit example, and incremental multi-screen test practices.
Diagnose failures from trace evidence
skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md, skills/e2e-dotnet/references/debugging.md, skills/e2e-dotnet/references/mcp.md, COMPATIBILITY.md
The workflow uses exception details and trace evidence, checks later steps before rerunning, uses MCP when evidence is insufficient, and documents .NET API and session limitations.

  • observed — COMPATIBILITY.md (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in skills/e2e-dotnet/references/writing-tests.md: Added “Start near the screen under test” to the document contents.
  • observed — Modified behavior in skills/e2e-dotnet/references/writing-tests.md: Added guidance to authenticate and seed test data in per-test setup, transfer API cookies to Browser, navigate directly to the target screen, validate setup responses, and clean up data in teardown; sign-in form interaction remains in the sign-in test.
  • observed — Modified behavior in skills/e2e-dotnet/references/writing-tests.md: Added a complete NUnit example that creates an API client, signs in, creates and tracks a project, deletes it after failures or partial setup, opens the project settings route directly, and verifies the rename result.
  • observed — Modified behavior in skills/e2e-dotnet/references/writing-tests.md: Added device-specific guidance using Device.OpenLinkAsync because devices have no cookies and App.OpenAsync takes no path.

Explanation

Issue #551 requires the near-screen test rule and the trace-based failed-test workflow in skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md and its writing-tests.md, debugging.md, and mcp.md references. The reviewed changes add API sign-in and data seeding, direct route navigation, device deep-link guidance, incremental multi-screen guidance, and failure diagnosis from exception and trace evidence. COMPATIBILITY.md records the .NET differences, including HttpClient, Browser.SetCookiesAsync, exception Details, and ## Screen at failure. The excluded upstream docs pages have no required counterpart.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reported changes remain within issue #551. The skill and reference updates document the requested test setup, direct navigation, failed-test diagnosis, MCP recovery, and upstream compatibility differences. Supporting fixture, teardown, replay-cache, and CI guidance directly supports that workflow. No unrelated product or runtime changes are reported.

- Around line 121-123: Update the workflow around the device-session branch to
match the documented Chromium-browser MCP session: either remove the
device-specific navigation instructions and keep only the browser path, or add
complete supported device-session setup before retaining that branch. Ensure the
resulting guidance is actionable and consistent with the documented session

Review comments at @skills/e2e-dotnet/references/writing-tests.md:
- Line 300: Update the cleanup flow around DeleteAsync to inspect the delete

failure when one already exists.
- Line 291: Update the project-seeding setup around _projectId to validate that
ReadFromJsonAsync<Project>() returns a non-null Project with a non-empty Id
before proceeding. Preserve cleanup when validation fails by retaining a
separate cleanup handle, such as the unique project name or supported Location
value, and have the [TearDown] cleanup path use the application-supported
operation when _projectId is unavailable.
