The built-in public site served the same listing at more than one address. /page/1 showed the same page as /, /pages/page/1 the same as /pages, and padded numbers like /page/02 the same as /page/2. A trailing slash, as in /pages/ or /page/2/, also gave another copy of the page. Term pages behaved the same way, e.g. /categories/news/page/1.

The site handler now resolves the address first. If the result is an archive or a term page, it works out the one address that page answers at: the listing's own address for page 1, or .../page/N with a plain number after that. If the request named the page any other way, including with a trailing slash, the handler answers with a 301 to that address and keeps the query string. Path parsing in content is unchanged. The check runs only after resolution because a nested item can legitimately live at an address like pages/page/1, and that item must keep answering there. A test covers this case.

Tests:

  • internal/publicsite: table-driven redirect cases for /page/1, /page/01, /page/02, /page/+2, query strings, /pages/page/1, /pages/page/007, the trailing-slash addresses /pages/, /page/2/, /pages/page/2/ and /categories/news/, and term pages. Further cases check that /, /page/2, /pages, /pages/page/2, a nested item at pages/page/1, and term pages keep answering 200.
  • test/features/content-serving.feature: the two scenarios that expected /page/1 and /pages/page/1 to list content now expect a permanent redirect, through a new step that does not follow redirects. A third scenario covers /page/02.

Ran go test on both packages, plus go vet, gofmt and cmd/doclint. golangci-lint was not available on my machine, so I did not run it.

This covers the built-in Go renderer only. When an Astro theme is active, it reads listings through /api/content/v1/resolve, which still answers /page/1 with the first page. Redirecting there as well would change the content API and the theme kit, so I left it for a separate decision.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Listing and term pages now redirect permanently to their canonical URLs when accessed through alternate paths.
    • Page-one URLs redirect to the listing root, and padded page numbers redirect to their normalized form.
    • Redirects preserve query strings, while canonical listing URLs continue to load normally.

[Medium impact] The change affects listing URLs on the built-in public site.

The PR should not merge until listing redirects stop sending readers to unrelated items.

### Issue 1
internal/publicsite/publicsite.go:154-156
Published content may legally occupy `/pages/page/2`. In that case, `/pages/page/02` resolves to archive page 2, but this redirect sends the reader to the item at `/pages/page/2` instead. The permanent redirect tells browsers and search engines that these different pages are equivalent.

Before redirecting, check that the destination resolves to the same listing and page; otherwise keep serving the listing. Add a test with an item at the destination.

Summary

The built-in renderer redirects alternate listing addresses to their canonical address and keeps the query string.

  • Built-in listing pages use one canonical address.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #512 requires one canonical address for each archive and term listing. ServeHTTP resolves the request before elsewhere checks it, so an item at pages/page/1 remains an item. elsewhere redirects page 1 to the listing path and later pages to an unpadded page/N path. It preserves the query string and uses HTTP 301. Tests cover route-word listings, term listings, padded and plus-prefixed numbers, trailing slashes, query strings, canonical 200 responses, and the nested item case.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within Issue #512. Production changes canonicalize built-in Go-rendered archive and term addresses. Unit and feature tests cover the required redirects and preserve valid item addresses. The Astro API remains unchanged, consistent with the stated built-in renderer scope. No unrelated production behavior is shown.

@codescene-access[bot] I moved the two new redirect tests unchanged into their own file, internal/publicsite/canonical_address_test.go. publicsite_test.go is now back to how it was before this PR, the same way per_page_test.go already sits next to it.

@coderabbitai good catch, thanks. The comparison now uses the requested path as it arrives, so a trailing slash on a listing gets redirected too: /pages/, /page/2/, /pages/page/2/ and /categories/news/ all send a 301 to the address without the slash. I changed the /pages/ case from expecting a 200 to expecting a redirect, and added cases for the numbered and term pages.

@orshih6 Thanks for the fix. I verified that elsewhere compares the canonical address directly with r.URL.Path. The tests now expect a 301 for all four trailing-slash cases you listed and check the exact Location value. This addresses the finding.

Code Review ✅ Approved 1 closed / 1 findings

🟡 Medium risk · Permanent redirects for noncanonical archive and term URLs could misroute visitors if the resolved canonical path is wrong.

Adds canonical address handling to the public site so archive and term pages answer at one address: the listing's own address for page 1, or .../page/N for later pages. Non-canonical forms such as padded numbers, +N, and trailing slashes now get a 301 with the query string preserved. Resolved a finding where a padded page could redirect to a nested item holding the plain-number address. No open issues found.

✅ 1 closed
✅ Edge Case: Padded page can 301 to a nested item that holds the plain-number address

📄 internal/publicsite/publicsite.go:184-191 📄 test/features/features/content-serving.feature:35-38
elsewhere builds the canonical .../page/N address but never checks whether that address resolves to the same listing. Items are allowed to live at such addresses: the "Exact content beats pagination" scenario files a page 2 under Page, so it lives at pages/page/2, and the resolver serves that item there. In that setup /pages/page/02 resolves to archive page 2 of pages and now returns a permanent 301 to /pages/page/2, which serves the nested item instead of the listing. The same thing happens on term pages (/categories/news/page/03 → an item at categories/news/page/3). Browsers cache 301s, so visitors keep getting sent to unrelated content. Fix: before redirecting, resolve the canonical address and only send the 301 if it gives the same kind, type/item and page; otherwise keep serving the listing where it was requested. Add a test for this collision.
