Tray icon under Niri with Noctalia

Issue Summary

Using the Flatpak version of Focus Timer.
Under Niri 26.04 or Mango 0.16.2 with Noctalia v4, the application seems to work fine.
However, I don't see the tray icon as under Gnome.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Enter Niri
2. Launch Noctalia Shell
3. Run Focus Timer with flatpak run --command=focus-timer io.github.focustimerhq.FocusTimer --gapplication-service

Context (logs, error output, screencast, OS, Desktop etc)

Expected Behavior

Tray icon appearing and responding to mouse clicks.

Current Behavior

Tray icon does not appear but mouse clicks work.

Possible Solution

From the log, it looks like some icons are missing.

From your description the system tray is not finding/rendering the icon properly.

SNI (KStatusNotifierItem) protocol was build with bitmaps in mind. Focus Timer is using IconThemePath which is not part of the spec but is widely used + symbolic icons. Not all system trays support the IconThemePath, custom icon theme, and symbolic icons all at once. Here's the compatibility matrix: #774 ...

Solutions:

1. Implement pixmap support/fallback in the Focus Timer. I do not like this since sending bitmaps over D-Bus is kinda waseful, and many desktops support symbolic icons just fine. Also user would need to tweak the icon size + colors in the app - i think it should work out-of-the-box. It would be hard to tell when to use a fallback - we rely on XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP env, which would be flaky here.

2. Fix IconThemePath support in Quickshell (Noctalia does not handle SNI directly). This issue seems to be already reported: "Searching custom icon paths is not yet supported." quickshell-mirror/quickshell#26 .

I think it's better to wait for a fix in Quickshell.

In the meantime, I've tried with Noctalia v5 (still in beta), and the issue disappears.
Version 5 does not depend on Quickshell, so this is in line with your explanation.
