Split Slack sections over 3000 characters instead of cutting them - #2410
Slack caps a section's text at 3000 characters, and BlockKitBuilder used to cut longer LinesBlock / CodeBlock text with .... Long messages (e.g. AI-written reports in elementary-internal's scheduled AI messages, elementary-internal#7690) lost their tail.
Now _add_lines_block and _add_code_block split the text into several sections:
at line breaks first;
a single line longer than the limit is split by _find_split: at the last space that isn't inside a <url|text> link, else just before a link that crosses the limit, else a hard cut at the limit (only for a single link or word longer than 3000 characters);
each code chunk is wrapped in its own ``` fence.
Messages below the limit produce the same blocks as before (existing fixtures unchanged). The 50-blocks-per-message cap is not handled here.
Known limitation: a single line longer than 3000 characters that has inline formatting spanning the split point (e.g. one very long *bold* run) gets its markup split across two sections. Links are kept whole.

BlockKitBuilder now splits formatted line blocks and code blocks into Slack-sized sections. Tests check section length, preserved content, and code fences.
Changes: Block Kit section chunking
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Chunk formatted content into sections elementary/messages/formats/block_kit.py, tests/unit/messages/formats/block_kit/test_block_kit.py
Line blocks split long lines at spaces where possible, then group lines into sections no longer than 3000 characters. Code blocks reserve space for fences and emit each chunk as a separately fenced section. Tests check section lengths and preserved content.
Some long Slack messages may be rejected, while newline-only line content can disappear; these behaviors should be addressed before merging.

Explanation
The title states the main change: Slack sections longer than 3000 characters are now split into multiple sections instead of being truncated. The raw summary confirms BlockKitBuilder now splits long lines and code blocks into chunks that fit the limit, and the objectives describe the same change replacing truncation with '...'. The title is specific and matches the changeset.

Keep messages within Slack’s block limit.
A LinesBlock containing "x" * 150001 produces 51 sections. Slack permits at most 50 blocks per message, so this change can prevent a long alert from being sent instead of truncating it. Split the output across messages or provide a bounded fallback. (docs.slack.dev)

Update the LinesBlock handling around _chunk_lines so output never exceeds

Skip zero-length chunks when flushing _chunk_lines.
TextBlock(text="") is a valid input. When it precedes a 3000-character line, _chunk_lines flushes the empty first line as a separate section. Slack requires section text to contain at least one character.

Update _chunk_lines to append a joined chunk only when it contains at least one

@coderabbitai replying to the two outside-diff findings in review 5753883302:
Zero-length chunks (block_kit.py:227): fixed in 667e389. A chunk that holds only empty lines is no longer flushed as a separate section. A block made only of empty lines still renders as one section, as it did before this PR. Covered by test_split_adds_no_section_for_a_leading_empty_line.
50-block limit (block_kit.py:240): confirmed. A single LinesBlock over about 150k characters now produces more than 50 sections, and Slack rejects the whole payload, where before it was sent cut at 3000. The PR description leaves the 50-block limit out of scope on purpose. Whether to split across messages or cap the sections is a product decision, so I'm leaving it open here and raising it with the maintainers.

Follow-up Comments
Enforce Slack’s 50-block message limit.
241-244: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Enforce Slack’s 50-block message limit.
These loops emit one section for every chunk without limiting the total block count. A sufficiently large LinesBlock, CodeBlock, or combined message can produce 51 or more blocks. Slack rejects messages above 50 blocks, so the notification is lost instead of split safely. Batch blocks into multiple messages or apply a bounded fallback before sending. 244:
Update the chunk-emission paths using _chunk_lines and _add_block so each Slack
message contains at most 50 blocks, including combined content from LinesBlock
and CodeBlock; split excess blocks into separate messages or apply a bounded
fallback before sending, without silently exceeding Slack’s limit.

@devin-ai-integration[bot] Thanks for the update.
Zero-length chunks: Source inspection confirms the current_length guard prevents the empty section in the reported case. test_split_adds_no_section_for_a_leading_empty_line covers that case. I did not run the tests.
50-block limit: The finding remains valid and unresolved. The section-splitting code does not enforce a message-level block limit. Maintainers need to decide whether to split across messages or cap sections.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue to track that decision and the required handling?
