My name is Edwin Serna

Summary

I am a full-time graduate student studying Computer Science and work part-time as a systems analyst assistant at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I am passionate about software development and video games. Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked, especially computers and the inner workings of software. As I discovered that most technology is written using coding languages, I became interested in learning how to create my own scripts to accomplish personal projects for myself and others.

Video games were a significant part of my childhood, and it is fascinating that they are essentially large groups of code that create immersive experiences for players, even if they have little to no technical background. I will learn how to create programs that can make a difference, provide unique experiences, and hopefully make life a little easier for people.

Current Process (Repos)

I am currently focused on learning how to design, build, and deploy websites. My current projects include:

  • "Momento," a Notion-like note taking platform.
  • Finishing my personal website to host projects.
  • Completing assignments that strengthen my understanding of concepts and applications.
  • Updating old projects that were not finished to make them more presentable.

Project Showcase

GPUDrive (Fork / Research Work)

A high-performance, data-driven, multi-agent driving simulator used for large-scale simulation and reinforcement learning research. I am working with this project to experiment with GPU-accelerated environments, training pipelines, and performance benchmarking between CPU and GPU-based simulations.

  • Repository: https://github.com/edenzaki
  • Tech: Python, C++, CUDA, PyTorch
  • Focus areas:
    • Reinforcement learning environment integration
    • GPU-accelerated simulation
    • Training and benchmarking pipelines
    • Large-scale scenario testing

Fixer-Uppers

A collection of smaller utility projects and scripts focused on improving, refactoring, or completing unfinished or broken codebases. These projects are used to practice debugging, automation, and software cleanup while building reusable tools.

  • Repository: https://github.com/edenzaki
  • Site: Fixer-Uppers
  • Tech: Python, Bash, JavaScript (varies by tool), hosted on AWS EC2 instance.
  • Focus areas:
    • Code cleanup and refactoring
    • Script automation
    • Bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements
    • Tooling for personal development workflows

Collaboration Opportunities

I am open to collaborating on personal projects, including:

  • Mommento:

    • Ability to take notes and store them on a local NAS.
    • Familiar formatting and layout, with the ability to export notes to other formats like list view, PDF, Excel sheets, etc.
    • A platform that supports real-time collaboration.
    • Each user has public and private notes.
  • An automated cat feeder:

    • Using an Arduino Uno Rev2 to schedule feeding times and quantities.
    • Audible alerts when food is ready.
    • Smart features to monitor food levels and adjust dispensing times.
  • Creating a website:

    • Planning and currently developing an e-commerce platform for marketing and selling project-based products online.
    • Storing all my projects (free and paid versions).
    • Implementing a chat system for project feedback, direct messaging, project requests, and commissioning services.
