👋 Hey! I am open-sourcing this complete team collaboration and management project. I built it primarily as a deep-dive learning project out of my fascination with WebRTC. (7 Sep 26)

Between managing my startup SeeknWander; handling the endless pivots, marketing strategies, customer acquisition cycles, figuring out distribution channels, trial and error, and countless other responsibilities alongside developing SeekPrivacy, recently contributing to F-Droid as a member, and handling a mountain of other commitments, I simply ran out of bandwidth to finish polishing it.

The core architecture and functionality are mostly built. The main roadblock I hit was getting the video streams to work cleanly I spent way too much time debugging and even switched some files from TypeScript to JavaScript just to get streams sending properly. Instead of leaving the code rotting on my hard drive, I figured open-sourcing it would make better use of it. If you want to jump in and fix those remaining WebRTC stream bugs, pull requests are more than welcome.

✅ What It Does

This is a flexible, real-time communication hub designed specifically for small, distributed teams and asynchronous workflows. It bridges the gap between rigid calendar meetings and slow text chats by combining instant WebRTC peer-to-peer calls with persistent voice messaging.

Core Features:

  • Chat: Real-time messaging space for quick text communication and coordination.
  • Audio Message Recording: Record and send persistent voice notes when managers or team leads are busy.
  • WebRTC Voice Calls: Direct peer-to-peer audio communication for instant discussions.
  • WebRTC Video Calls: Direct peer-to-peer video streams for face-to-face troubleshooting.
  • Group & One-to-One Communication: Flexible channels supporting direct messaging or multi-person team conferences.
  • Team Communication Management: Streamlined dashboards and workflows tailored for tracking and handling team inputs.
  • Communication History: Full logging and organization of past calls, messages, and feedback.

Core Workflows:

  • For Real-Time Collaboration: When a team member encounters a roadblock, they can instantly initiate an individual or group voice or video call with the team lead no calendar invites or scheduling friction required.
  • For Asynchronous Management: When the manager or team lead is busy, members can record and send detailed voice notes. Managers can listen to them in sequence when they log back online, keeping everything in one place instead of scattered across third-party chat apps.

✅ Decentralized & Self-Hosted

One of the key angles that makes this project different is its decentralization and ease of self-hosting.

  • Own Your Infrastructure: You can set up and run your own instance without any hassle or reliance on heavy centralized corporate platforms.
  • Direct Control: No forced third-party lock-in for your media pipelines or data storage, giving teams total privacy and autonomy over their communication environment.

✅ Technical Highlights

  1. WebRTC P2P Architecture:
    • Uses direct peer-to-peer connections for media streams instead of expensive third-party cloud SDKs like Agora or Twilio.
    • Avoids central media servers, lowering cloud infrastructure costs and offering interesting performance characteristics for small teams.
    • Note: This is also where the remaining video stream debugging is needed.
  2. Custom Backend & Auth:
    • Self-built Supabase authentication and real-time chat.
    • Avoids heavy vendor lock-in and gives you a clean architecture to learn how underlying auth and real-time data flows work.
  3. Voice-First Design:
    • Built around the idea that complex problem explanations are faster to speak than type, perfectly suited for timezone gaps or asynchronous management.

✅ The Problem It Solves

Teams working on projects often face unexpected issues that need immediate input, but traditional tools fall short:

  • Scheduling meetings takes time and interrupts flow state.
  • Text chat is slow for complex problems, and emotional context or tone gets lost.
  • Managers and leads are often unavailable when unexpected issues pop up.
  • Voice notes usually end up scattered across random consumer messaging applications.

✅ Key Differentiators

Feature Why It Matters
Voice over text Clearer communication for complex bugs; much faster than typing out code context.
Async voice queue Solves timezone and availability gaps; managers review feedback on their own timeline.
Persistent message hub No lost context; all team feedback lives in one organized space.
No calendar needed Spontaneous work problems happen anytime they shouldn't require meeting links.
WebRTC P2P calls Direct browser-to-browser connection for lower latency and better privacy.
Decentralized Setup Deploy your own private communication server easily without platform lock-in.

✅ Target Use Cases

  • Remote or hybrid teams relying on asynchronous workflows.
  • Development or support teams handling ad-hoc incidents.
  • Small companies looking for an alternative to expensive software stacks like Slack, Teams, and Zoom subscriptions.
  • Distributed contractors reporting to a single project manager.

✅ Contributing and Collaboration

The core functionality works, including group and individual video calls alongside the voice feedback loop, but the video streams need some final debugging.

  • Want to contribute code? Just fork the repository, push fixes or improvements to the WebRTC streams or user interface, and open a pull request. I will review them as soon as I can.
  • Want to collaborate? If you are interested in taking this concept further or working together as a team member, I would be glad to connect.

If you want to try it out without spinning it up locally on your system, let me know. I can set up GitHub Pages and Supabase on my end so it can be tested easily, which will also be helpful when editing code since the worker will run directly.
