Twenty yes/no questions, no text answers, one hackathon project out.

You paste a hackathon link (or its description, or nothing) and answer twenty yes/no questions about yourself. Then it names one project: a name and one sentence. No list of options and no explanation. If you don't like it, Ask 3 more keeps your answers and asks three more questions. Start from 0 begins again with different questions.

Made for Build With AI: Basics on Devpost. The hackathon's skill pack starts by asking what you want to build, and assumes you already know. This is the step before that.

Run it

Needs Node 22 or newer and an Anthropic API key.

npm install
cp .env.example .env # put your key in .env
npm start # http://localhost:3000

npm run mock runs without a key. It uses a fixed list of sample questions (not adaptive) and is only for working on the interface.

Keys: Y and N answer, A asks 3 more, 0 starts from 0, Enter begins.

How it works

The page is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, no framework and no build step. A small Node server (server.js) keeps the API key off the browser, fetches the hackathon page, and calls Claude. The server keeps nothing between requests; the page sends the whole run every time.

  • lib/hackathon.js turns the link into plain text. Claude reduces that to a short brief: theme, rules, judging, how much time there is.
  • lib/oracle.js holds the prompts. The questions go in three phases: who you are (1-8), what kind of thing (9-15), and its character (16-20). Each run draws 8 random life areas for the first phase, so two runs in a row start differently.
  • public/app.js asks for the next question for both answers while you are still reading the current one, so most taps get the next question in under a second.

The model is claude-sonnet-5-5, effort low for questions and high for the verdict, with JSON output. Each answer is its own content block with a cache marker on the last one, so a question costs about $0.001 and a full run about $0.05. The server prints time, tokens and cost for every call.

Planning documents

Built with the Devpost Learn skill pack (.agents/skills/). The planning documents it produced are in devpost/: scope, PRD, spec and the build checklist. The checklist also records where the build left the pack's normal order.
