fix(live): Buddy shows up, nothing opens under the preview, chat stays on the newest message - #730
Conversation
Bump rustls-webpki 0.103.15 -> 0.103.16 (distrusted intermediates could be accepted) and webpki-roots 1.0.7 -> 1.0.10 (distrusted emSign roots). zvariant, zbus_names and zvariant_derive are now flagged unmaintained because they were folded into zbus 6. They reach us only through ashpd 0.13 (Linux screencast portal), and no ashpd release uses zbus 6 yet, so the audit ignores exactly those three informational notices, each named with the dependency that pulls it in. Use reason-specific retry copy.
When reason is network, the label says Retrying: no connection, but this empty state says “Videorc AI didn't answer.” Use the gateway-specific sentence only for gateway-error. Use network-specific or neutral copy for other retry reasons.

Reject negated presence cues.
parse_buddy_presence does not check for negation before the cue. These inputs flip the intent:
- "Buddy, don't go away" returns
HideBuddy. The cue "go away" matches, anddontis not a verb. - "Buddy, don't hide" returns
HideBuddy. - "Buddy, never leave the screen" returns
HideBuddy. - "Buddy, don't show up" returns
ShowBuddy.
The command dispatch writes the saved overlayLayout.buddy.showOnStream switch. A negated sentence can remove Buddy from the live stream and from later streams. Skip the command when a negation word precedes the cue. Keep the polite "why don't you show up" form working.

Require a place word for generic move verbs with "in" particles.
The cue matches go, get, be, stay, stand or step plus any BUDDY_IN_PARTICLES word, with no place or self word. These inputs return ShowBuddy:
- "Buddy, go over the numbers":
overis an "in" particle. - "Buddy, go back and explain".
- "Buddy, stay up late".
Each one writes the saved show-on-stream switch. Phrases such as "pop up" and "jump in" are specific enough without a place. Phrases such as "go over" and "go back" are common speech. The out-direction cues ("go away", "get off", "step out") can stay as they are.

Do not report the backoff boundary as a scheduled retry.
When a tick fails with no new chat or sufficient speech pending, apply_failure consumes its batch and tick_due has no work to send. This line still publishes retryAt, so the renderer can show “Retrying” indefinitely without another attempt. Even with pending chat, the 8-second gap or 20-second trickle rule can put the next tick later than next_attempt_at. Derive retryAt from the actual next eligible tick, and omit it when no tick is scheduled.

Serialize the Buddy layout update with concurrent layout edits.
buddy_presence_outcome reads the full layout, changes show_on_stream, and saves the full layout. A concurrent edit after the read can be overwritten. Update the Buddy setting within the same serialized read/write operation, or make set_overlay_layout merge against the current layout before saving.

The End livestream question opened under the docked native preview during a live stream (2026-10-21): the overlay watcher only knew the plain dialog's scrim, and the confirm is an alert dialog. Alert dialogs now hide the docked surface too, and context menus, hover cards and visible toasts do whenever they overlap it. Tooltips stay exempt so hovering a control beside the preview never blinks it. A contract test classifies every portalled ui slot, so a new overlay kind cannot slip under the preview again. The preview-window probe now drives the real renderer watcher with an alert dialog and a dialog. The hidden-preview copy no longer says "paused" while live. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
During a live stream (2026-10-21) the owner kept scrolling the chat back
down: Buddy's "Talking about this" scrolled the matched message to the
middle and stopped following new ones, and any scroll away from the
bottom (a re-measure, scroll anchoring, a clamp) counted as the streamer
leaving.
New messages now appear at the bottom and the list follows them. Only
the streamer's own scroll up (wheel, touch, keys, the scrollbar) stops
it; rows that grow, highlights and removals keep it on the newest
message, and the spotlight marks a row without scrolling. While the
list is not following, one chip ("12 new", "New chat" or "Latest") goes
back. The rule is recorded as an owner call in the design skill.

…stream During a live stream (2026-10-21) Buddy never appeared on the picture: both of its output switches were off (an old launch bug cleared them, fixed in #705), and nothing in the Stream Manager said so. Gateway 502s on about a quarter of the ticks also flipped its status to a red "Stopped" again and again, which read as a crash. - Voice: "Buddy, show up / come on screen / appear" puts the Buddy on stream and "Buddy, hide / go away / leave the screen" takes it off, through the saved overlay layout (live sessions swap at once). The owner's own sentence was heard as a highlight of a viewer called "something". Comment phrasing keeps its grammar, and farewells never hide the Buddy, since the switch is saved. - Presence: a failed tick with a scheduled retry reads "Retrying" (`retryAt`); only the backoff ceiling reads as stopped. - Stream Manager: on air with Buddy Live on and the Buddy on no output, the Buddy pane says "Golmar isn't on stream." with Show on stream. - A layout change mid-session prepares the Buddy's sprite for the new legs, and each atlas build logs one line.
