Fixes #228.

Summary

The DOM host redraws synchronously when the page enters or leaves print layout, so every adapter prints at the print container width.

 mountChartRenderer
   render()
   configureObserver()
+ printMedia.addEventListener('change', handlePrintChange)

+handlePrintChange
+ forget last ResizeObserver size # may be stale during print
+ if measured container size changed
+ render(true, 'layout') # now, no animation frame, no motion

A resize frame that is still pending finds the size unchanged and skips. The listener is removed in destroy(). No public API change.

Also included:

  • changeset (patch) and a paragraph in docs/guides/responsive-charts.md
  • API-FRICTION.md F-315
  • bundle baselines and budgets refreshed (second commit)

Evidence

New test redraws at the print container width without waiting for a frame in renderer.test.ts:

container 972 → 420, observer reports 420, frame pending
dispatch print media change
expect scene.width === 420 before any frame runs
observer reports stale 420, container back to 972, dispatch change
expect scene.width === 972
unchanged size → no redraw; destroy() removes the same listener

Browser conformance (Chromium): new printStart/printEnd steps hold animation frames, size the container under @media print and emulate print media. Scenario print-width on 34-pointer-tooltip (TanStack only):

printStart width=420 → expect svg.ts-chart[viewBox^='0 0 420 '] count 1
printEnd → expect that count 0, chart still present

pnpm conformance -- --first-party --case=34-pointer-tooltip

  • Before: unit AssertionError: expected 972 to be 420; conformance print-width fails in 12/12 variants (count 0)
  • After: passes in 12/12. Catalog index and preview fingerprint refreshed (commit 3); the nine tooltip preview SVGs are kept as committed because their weekday labels depend on the generating machine's time zone (API-FRICTION.md F-316).
  • Also passes: pnpm test (2238 tests), typecheck, format-check, docs-check, bundle:check, benchmark-check pass locally.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Revert removes one listener; nothing persisted.

Blast Radius: bundle

+143 B minified / ~50 B gzip on every DOM-host consumer. Budgets for six entries and the locked baselines were raised to the measured values in chore: record print redraw bundle costs, which needs maintainer approval. Charts with fixed width and height are unaffected, because the handler measures nothing when no dimension is container-owned.

Add a headless-browser test that narrows the responsive container under print media, checks the chart geometry before PDF capture, and calls page.pdf().

Thanks @piecyk, I reproduced #228 against main and checked the renderer change at 2f972218343861593cdb047f66f5715765455d8e in isolated browsers.

With animation frames held, main kept a 972 px scene in a 420 px print container. Your change redrew it to 420 px and restored 972 px on exit in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Chromium's actual page.pdf() cycle also recorded the 420 px redraw between beforeprint and afterprint, then restored the screen width. This checks host layout timing, not a visual comparison of the PDF.

The source-entry measurements changed 19 bundles and left 95 byte-identical. Maximum growth was 0.155 kB minified, 0.069 kB gzip and 0.156 kB Brotli. Those are independent source-entry measurements, not the full packed-package or comparison suite. The budget increases still need approval.

A small print case in an existing browser check would preserve this coverage without adding another CI job. Full PR validation is still pending, so this is confirmation of the print behavior, not a merge-ready approval.

Thanks for adding the browser case. I reviewed the delta at 5058c31098e84fcf1abf34b5a012059cf538e374 and found one issue in the new print helper, separate from the renderer fix.

startBehaviorPrint replaces requestAnimationFrame but leaves cancelAnimationFrame unchanged. A held callback that gets canceled is still in the array, so endBehaviorPrint schedules it anyway. I reproduced this scheduling logic in isolated Chromium: requesting a held frame, canceling its returned handle, then restoring frames still called the callback once, where zero calls were expected. The array indexes can also overlap native frame handles.

Please preserve cancellation while holding frames: use distinct held-frame IDs, remove canceled entries, and restore both functions on exit. Keep cancellation of native frames that were queued before printing working too. This should fit in the existing helper without another CI job.

The production renderer is unchanged from the head I tested earlier. I have not run the new full conformance scenario yet.

Thanks, good catch. Fixed in 225dee12, inside the existing helper:

  • Held frames get negative IDs, so they can't overlap native handles.
  • cancelAnimationFrame is replaced too: it drops a held entry, or passes the handle to the native cancel, so native frames queued before printing stay cancelable.
  • printEnd restores both functions and replays only the frames that weren't cancelled.

Checked in Chromium against the real helpers: a cancelled held frame runs 0 times (the previous helper ran it once), a kept one runs once, a native handle cancelled while holding doesn't run, and both functions are restored. print-width passes in 12/12 variants and still fails 12/12 on the previous renderer. The renderer is unchanged from the head you tested.

The scenario runs in CI once the PR has the browser-correctness label.

Thanks, I checked the helper changes through 9285f0e517b129ea991b4bdc00aa6aed52fbc92e.

The revised helpers pass isolated Chromium, Firefox and WebKit checks: canceled held frames and canceled native frames run zero times, an uncanceled held frame runs once, nested print starts are rejected, and both frame functions and the injected style are restored. I also suppressed the media-change event and verified the five-second timeout rejects and cleanup still restores the page. These checks used a simulated media-change adapter around the actual helper functions, not the full conformance runner.

The earlier frame-cancellation finding is addressed. Full PR validation and the bundle changes still need to clear before merging. I'm also checking the preview timezone issue separately so regenerating previews won't depend on the contributor's machine timezone.

The preview timezone fix is on main in #230. Thanks for flagging it. Preview generation now pins UTC, and a second full run with the host set to Europe/Warsaw produced all 188 files byte-for-byte unchanged. No runtime packages or CI jobs changed.

Please bring main into this branch and regenerate previews normally, so the manifest and SVGs come from the same source state. That should remove the need for the sourceHash-only workaround noted in F-316.

I also checked the helpers at afae070a341c5df0b810aec5054d437a2c7d38ef with real print-media transitions in isolated Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. The container went from 972 to 420 and back, canceled native and held frames stayed canceled, the retained frame ran once, and cleanup restored both frame functions. Separate missing-event and rejected-emulation checks passed too. This verifies the helper behavior, not the full conformance suite or the remaining bundle tradeoff.

Merged main (#230) into the branch in 71e430ea and regenerated previews normally in Europe/Warsaw. All 188 SVGs match main byte for byte; only sourceHash changed. F-316 is marked resolved. Unit tests, typecheck, format, docs, catalog index/examples/previews, bundle and benchmark checks, and the print-width scenario all pass on the merged tree.

Print layout and headless PDF export resize the chart container without
running an animation frame, so the resize redraw never happened and the
browser scaled the screen-width SVG down. The DOM host now listens for
the `print` media change, measures the container directly, and redraws
synchronously when a container-owned dimension changed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add `printStart` and `printEnd` behavior steps. `printStart` holds
animation frames, as browsers print without them, sizes the container
under `@media print`, and emulates print media. The `34-pointer-tooltip`
TanStack mount now follows its container so a `print-width` scenario can
require the print `viewBox`. Scenarios can name the renderers that run
them, since references do not redraw on print.

Refresh the catalog index and preview fingerprint. Keep the committed
tooltip previews, whose weekday labels depend on the local time zone.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Give held frames negative IDs that cannot collide with native handles,
drop canceled held frames, pass native handles to the native cancel, and
restore both functions when print ends.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reject `printStart` while a print is active. Bound both media-change
waits to 5 s, fail the step when print media does not apply, and always
restore the style, frame functions, and print state in `printEnd`.
Scenario cleanup ignores a timed-out exit because the page is restored.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Check the screen media timeout after restoring the page instead of
throwing from `finally`, so an `emulateMedia` rejection is not replaced
by the timeout error.

Refresh the comparison bundle baseline and comparison page for the
rebased print redraw commit, and the catalog preview fingerprint. Mark
F-316 resolved by TanStack#230.
