Audit note — 2026-10-02

This URL is not yet covered as an in-product guided lab. docs/learning/runtime-roadmap.md mentions a broad Fly.io blog link under Edge & serverless runtimes (“Replays and isolation”), while distributed-systems references include MIT 6.824, DDIA, the Raft paper, and Jepsen. Search of the learning docs found no Maelstrom, Fly distributed-systems challenge, or runnable node/task material. Existing Raft concepts and drills cover consensus theory but do not implement the six-step request/reply, unique IDs, broadcast, grow-only counter, Kafka-style log, and transaction sequence in the linked Fly tutorial.

If resumed, keep the scope as an original, small, guided learning module with one runnable learner task and reference link; preserve the app’s artifact/evidence and mastery constraints. Do not copy the tutorial wholesale or add runtime dependencies. This is a follow-up candidate only; current product instructions say maintenance-only, so no implementation was started.

Update — bounded Echo learning unit prepared

The source worktree at base 9a04193aa19a1491246026bc215fe211d8e0feb7 now contains one original, one-session Maelstrom Echo lab at docs/learning/maelstrom-echo.md. It is discoverable from the Learning OS index and runtime roadmap, and the existing /learning/:slug renderer automatically loads the new Markdown file; a title/blurb entry gives it a readable card and understanding-check label.

The lab asks learners to trace an envelope, implement only Echo in a language they already use, optionally run the upstream one-node/10-second workload if Maelstrom is already installed, and save the request/reply invariant plus an honest test result. It does not reproduce the challenge sequence or add runtime dependencies. References: Fly.io Echo challenge, Maelstrom protocol, setup guide.

pnpm docs:validate and git diff --check pass. This scratch worktree has no node_modules, so I did not install dependencies or claim a rendered/build verification. The source is unpublished and the issue remains open until a reviewed change is published.

Acceptance update

This follow-up supersedes the earlier note that the route had not yet been rendered. After the initial render exposed visible YAML frontmatter and a clipped mobile command, I removed the frontmatter (the route uses DOC_META for its card title) and split the shell command across lines.

The final scratch build passes. In a local isolated browser, the Learning index link opened /learning/maelstrom-echo successfully at 390, 768, and 1440 px; all three captures show the expected title, lab, and understanding panel, with no frontmatter, horizontal page overflow, overflowing code blocks, or page errors. Screenshots and a compact report are in /tmp/fleet-visual-20261002/swe-interview-prep/ for review. The browser blocked non-local traffic and non-GET requests.

Maelstrom is not installed locally, so the optional upstream workload command was not run. No runtime was installed. The source remains unpublished; issue #114 stays open until the reviewed change is published.

The original Fly.io distributed-systems link is now covered by an original Echo learning unit in the existing Learning OS route, merged through #115 and published at https://learn.significanthobbies.com/learning/maelstrom-echo. Exact-main CI run 37009169043 and the migration-disabled Pages deploy run 37016661110 both passed. The live route returned HTTP 200 and rendered at 390/768/1440 px without overflow or browser errors. The optional Maelstrom CLI workload was not run because the executable is absent; the lesson labels that command conditional and does not claim a pass. Closing the missing-content issue.
