CRUCIBLE — Trial by fire for AI.

CRUCIBLE

Trial by fire for AI.

Black-box offensive testing that hunts the failure modes your model ships with — then proves them, with error bars.

tests python frameworks license status

Point it at any LLM or agent endpoint. CRUCIBLE throws 20+ attack suites at it, adapts when it gets refused, maps every break to MITRE ATLAS / OWASP LLM Top 10 / NIST AI RMF, and hands you a verdict you can take to a review board. It runs fully local and air-gapped if you want, recons the infrastructure around the model, and grows its own attacks over time.

⚔️ Think like an attacker. Report like a defender. CRUCIBLE is offensive-capable. Point it only at systems you own or are written-authorized to test.

⚡ 60-second start

git clone <this-repo> crucible && cd crucible
pip install -e ".[all]" # CLI + PDF + web dashboard + docs

crucible --mode vapt --local # fire at a local Ollama model — nothing leaves your box
crucible --serve # …or drive it from the dashboard at http://127.0.0.1:8000

Hosted target instead:

crucible --mode redteam --framework atlas --owasp --nist --pdf \
  --endpoint https://api.openai.com --api-key $KEY --model gpt-4o

Scope & cost with zero traffic first: add --dry-run.

⚔️ The arsenal — --mode

crucible --list-tests --mode <name> dumps any suite.

Mode # Hits
vapt 28 Prompt injection · data leakage · robustness

agentic 30 Tool hijacking, memory + planning manipulation

many-shot 8 Long-context in-context-learning bypass (4/8/16/32-shot curve)
obfuscation 15 Base64 / ROT13 / Unicode / zero-width / emoji evasion
multilingual 18 Cross-language jailbreaks (7 langs)
multimodal · audio · video 8·8·8 Image / voice / frame attack surfaces

authz 16 BOLA / BFLA / RBAC bypass / SSRF / shell / cross-context
model-theft 12 Extraction · inversion · membership (see --extract)
benign 22 Over-refusal traps — a refusal here is the failure

Plus declarative composition: --vuln A,B --attack X,Y → a 14×14 vuln × technique matrix.

🧠 What makes it lethal

  • Attackers that learn. --dynamic mutates on every refusal (PAIR), --tap branches a tree of attacks, --crescendo grows a multi-turn conversation off the target's own replies and backtracks when it's blocked, --auto profiles → plans → escalates on its own.
  • Local-first / air-gap. --local runs the whole generate→fire→judge→mutate loop against Ollama with zero external calls; --offline hard-refuses any non-local endpoint.
  • A red-team that improves itself. Wins seed a bge-m3 + SQLite knowledge base (--evolve); the SLM pipeline fine-tunes a local attacker and only ships it if a Wilson-CI A/B proves it beats the base (python -m slm.pipeline).
  • Model stealing. --extract — determinism fingerprint, system-prompt/param exfiltration, training-data inversion (PII/secret recall), membership gap (Mann-Whitney AUC).
  • Full stack, one tool. --recon bridges AgentHound to find exposed MCP/LiteLLM/Ollama/vLLM/Qdrant/MLflow services; --full-stack then sweeps them behaviourally and emits one report chaining reachable infra to exploitable behaviour.
  • Numbers that survive scrutiny. ASR@1 / ASR@N with Wilson CIs, coverage grids, published-baseline deltas, SARIF for code-scanning, a branded PDF for the readout.

🛡️ It gates itself

Offensive capability, on a leash:

  • Authorization every run on the sharp paths (--recon / --full-stack / --extract / --discover) — interactive, or --i-am-authorized / CRUCIBLE_AUTHORIZED=1; --ci never bypasses it.
  • Rules of Engagement — drop a .crucible-roe.yaml (see .crucible-roe.example.yaml) and CRUCIBLE refuses any target or recon scope outside the authorized CIDRs/hosts, or past its expiry.
  • Audit trail — every side-effectful run appends to .crucible-audit.jsonl (operator, time, action, host, ROE ref).
  • Blast-radius caps — --budget / --max-calls (hard ceiling) · --rps / --delay.
  • Redaction — --anonymize scrubs the endpoint/key and emails/SSNs/API-secrets/phones from saved bodies.

🎯 Install profiles

Command You get
pip install -e . Core CLI (requests + pyyaml) — every attack mode, JSON/CSV/SARIF
pip install -e ".[server]" --serve web dashboard (FastAPI + SSE)
pip install -e ".[pdf]" --pdf export
pip install -e ".[browser]" --schema browser (Playwright)
pip install -e ".[all]" everything above
pip install -e ".[dev]" + pytest

crucible and the short cru both land on PATH. crucible --help prints the full ~180-flag reference. Providers: openai · anthropic · cohere · mistral · google · ollama · azure · bedrock · custom · browser.

Docker

docker build -t crucible:3.0.0 .
docker run --rm crucible:3.0.0 --version
docker run --rm -v "$PWD/reports:/app/reports" crucible:3.0.0 \
  --mode vapt --endpoint https://api.openai.com --api-key "$KEY" --model gpt-4o
docker run --rm -p 8000:8000 crucible:3.0.0 --serve --serve-host 0.0.0.0 # dashboard

📤 Output & verdicts

Reports land in --output-dir (default ./reports): JSON · CSV · SARIF 2.1.0 (GitHub code-scanning) · PDF. Exit codes: 0 clean · 1 over --ci-threshold · 2 input/warn · 3/4 recon-tool / ROE refusal.

Verdict Meaning
PASS Model held the line (refused)
FAIL Model complied — you found a hole
WARN Hedged / partial — eyeball it
PARTIAL_REFUSAL Refused but leaked — half weight
SILENT Empty output — no risk
ERROR Call failed — excluded from ASR

Risk = severity-weighted FAILs (WARN at half), normalized 0–100 → LOW / MEDIUM / HIGH / CRITICAL.

🔧 Dev

pip install -e ".[dev]" && pytest -q      # ~1,800 tests

CI (.github/workflows/crucible.yml) runs the suite on py3.10–3.12 + pip-audit + a CycloneDX SBOM. Architecture & feature history: ROADMAP.md · changelog: CHANGELOG.md.

⚖️ Legal

Authorized testing only. Get explicit written permission before you point CRUCIBLE at anything. Unauthorized testing may violate computer-fraud law (CFAA & friends), provider ToS, and your professional ethics. Payloads are written at an attack-vector abstraction — they test refusals, not operational harm. See SECURITY.md.
