Bumps coverage from 7.16.0 to 7.16.1.

7.16.1

Version 7.16.1 — 2026-09-13

  • Fix: when the body of an irrefutable case (like case _:) is entirely excluded, the case line is now excluded too, just as an excluded else: body removes the else: line. Previously the case line was left behind and reported as missing. Closes issue 1563 with pull 2269.
  • Fix: using CoverageData.update() twice on an in-memory database would fail, as described in issue 2279. This is now fixed.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Code Review: Bump coverage 7.16.0 → 7.16.1

The diff changes two lines in pyproject.toml: the coverage pin for Python >3.11 in the development extras (line 38) and in the test extras (line 87).

Code Quality

  • ✅ Style: Both pins are updated the same way and the formatting is unchanged.
  • ✅ No commented-out code.
  • ✅ Naming and DRY: Not applicable. The coverage pin appears in two dependency groups, which matches the existing layout.
  • ✅ Defects: None expected from a patch-level bump. The python_version <= '3.11' pin stays at 7.10.7, and that is the right choice because newer coverage releases dropped older Python versions. I haven't checked the 7.16.1 release notes, so I can't confirm it has no regressions.
  • ✅ Project CLAUDE.md: The diff doesn't touch it. It contains nothing specific to a local environment.

Testing

  • ✅ Not applicable: No new functions or endpoints were added. CI should confirm that the pytest-cov==7.1.0 pin still works with coverage 7.16.1.

Documentation

  • ✅ README and API docs: No update needed.
  • ⚠️ CHANGELOG.md: The diff doesn't update it. Prior Dependabot bumps in this repo (build, virtualenv) also appear to skip it, so this is acceptable. Check whether the project expects dependency bumps to be listed.
  • ✅ Markdown: No Markdown files changed.

Security

  • ✅ No hardcoded credentials, license files (.lic) or AQAAAD strings in the diff.
  • ✅ Input validation, error handling and logging: Not affected.
  • ✅ Supply chain: The version is pinned exactly, which is good practice.

Summary

This is a low-risk Dependabot patch bump with no issues found. I recommend approving it once CI passes.
