I would like do a talk on different techniques for embedding untrusted UI in web applications. I would structure the talk based on the progression we took at Shopify to embedding UIs created by Shopify platform developers. I'd start with discussion of the good, bad, and ugly of <iframe>s, briefly touch on open-source component libraries, then end with a deeper look at Shopify’s modern “UI extensions” and the open-source library we released that powers them, remote-dom. This talk would be heavily focused on web technologies, as most libraries Shopify provided developers were based on JavaScript, but I will also cover how these same techniques were used in Shopify’s native apps to power cross-platform UI extensibility.
I left Shopify earlier this year, but I am the original author of the remote-dom project, and was heavily involved in Shopify’s developer ecosystem for almost a decade.
